Consolidated Watchlists!

Today we implemented one of the most requested features on Newsvine: a consolidated watchlist page. Click the little grey "eye" icon in the main navigation if you don't believe us.

If you're not using a watchlist yet, try adding a few items to your own and watch how the consolidated page reacts. Like every feature around the Vine, we have much more in store for this.

This week we've also made a few subtle changes to the news mix so subjects on the front page are a bit more heterogeneous.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. It's really helping us prioritize improvements.

P.S. The eye icon needs a bit of work. We'll try and get to it Thursday. Suggestions/submissions welcome, by the way.

I'm not sure why this was highly requested as it seems redundant, but whatever. I look forward to the revised icon. ;)

Also, the "clear new" button is nice. I'd like to see that same style button used more globally throughout the site.

Sean: If you have 40 items you're watching, 40 clicks is redundant! One is better... no?

I thought that's what the "Show only new items" checkbox was for. But I suppose you're right -- if I had over 40 tags, each with new items, the option of viewing them in a consolidated list would be preferable.

Plus, whoever said redundancy was bad? I think a key to usability is redundancy. In fact, redundancy is good. It provides for a better user experience. I appreciate the redundancy in terms of interfaces. Keep up the redundancy!

      Wowowow..

I absolutely love this new feature. Better fill up that watchlist with some prime stuff :-)

        Wonderful

And I dont see it as redundant at all. Looking at a specific tag or poster is quite different then looking for an overview of whats happening.

From my take the combined watchlist id about having a font page / consolidated news page that is tailored to my interests.. watch a dozen or so tags, and a handful of good posters and have it all bubble up and shuffle around based on new-ness and ratings into one presentation (and maybe feed? hehe)

I agree with Sean S, the icon should be modified. In fact, I like the original " watch" icon, the "clear" is a big suprise. But like Sean says, I think the " show only the new item" may be prefered.

I like the idea ... but it wraps the menu now, and the Odd News link is below all the others.

I agree--the new icon needs some work.

The feature is great--but like I said on a post where this feature was requested, I need to find good people to watch for this to be useful. :-)

I think the biggest issue right now is the tech concentration, and I'm not sure it will ever totally go away. I guess the Newsvine folks will probably change their algorithm to not include as much tech, but the audience for the next 6 months with primarily be the technically-inclined.

I was happy to see the Chat holdup quite well during the MacWorld Keynote. I can already see that Newsvine needs a way to block a user--one kid in the chat was driving me insane.

Maybe this is only a bug because you are blocking none user access, but I can't access my watchlist feed through my feed reader (netnewswire).

Josh, I'm having the same problem. I reported the bug early this morning, so the Newsvine people are aware of it.

At first I didn't get it. But than I realized that I can also watch certain tags. The ball suddenly dropped. My god, I can create my own newspaper with only the very specialized news that I'm interested in. This is absolutely amazing! Congrats! You guys are going to be rich and famous for making ppls life easier through this web site. Kudos.

I really like the feature being one of the ones to suggest it. However, I have the following suggestion:

Separate the articles by tag and allow us to control the number per tag.

I have specific, high-interest tags that get very few articles and find it hard to locate the stories amongst the tech articles.

                              ...amending my last comment...

I realize I could use the tags on the side to get the low frequencies articles but I really like having a single click to catch up on a number of sections at once. Essentially, fully personalize Google news (plus all the other benefits of newsvine). That kind of page would make it to my default home page.

Very nice idea. Does it make sense to have that in the top left though? I can't really think of a better place but that position tells me that you think the watch list will be more important then most other features.

Collin: Yes, I do think that the consolidated watchlist is potentially more interesting to a lot of people that general purpose news. It either goes first, or it goes last... first made more sense.

Suggestion: Just like you have "Author" and "Newsvine", add a unique look to comments made by "You"

No need for anything oddly dynamic, just the same variable could be used for what's currently in use for the Editor's column, the link to your own subdomain. For a "You"-comment, just put an identifier on each comment that contains their subdomain-name, and just write that var into an embedded line of CSS:

                                      #faruk { /* "You"-comment CSS here */ }

For you, Mike, it'd be written out as #mike { }, etc.

Would be cool and very useful to have, as it allows you to see Much more easily where your own comments are.

I wonder if the link to my consolidated watch list would be best in the box with my column and history. (And ditch the eye icon all together.)

Also, on the watch page, I'm not seeing the "new" icon. I have to go to the tag pages to get that big green guide to what's new. Do those only appear on the Vine items? I don't think I've seen them on Wire items, even when that's where the one new thing is.

---> The "eye" rules! I usally hit that first when I visit.

Next to it (or on the other end of the bar) a "Featured Writers" or (other?) link would be nice to bring up a page of all writers with options to sort various newsvine writers various ways like most recent articles written, by topic, by category, by the most comments, etc. The "Featured Writers" box (on each newsvine main page) is soon going to get overly stressed from too many daily writers I think. But maybe keep 5x writers in the boxes, but then somehow link them to a Featured Writers wepage too? I dunno just thowing out thoughts here...

The Featured Writers Newsvine Webpage could be: "Writers.Newsvine.com" or maybe this too: "FeaturedWriters.NewsVine.com"? I'd so like to have more control on finding past writers, who they are, what they've written, comments to them, etc. -Cosmo- :)
