As many Newsvine readers may have noticed, we experienced an unfortunate server outage during the pre-dawn hours of Friday morning. The bad news was that the site was unfortunately down for a little while, but the good news is that this was our first extended period of downtime since launch.
First, a brief explanation of what happened: Without getting into too much detail, occasionally a server that's in rotation will get a bit cranky. 99% of the time, the server "heals" itself quickly through a normal set of automated monitoring and refreshing procedures. If something really unfortunate happens, the server is automatically pulled out of rotation and Newsvine is happily served up by the rest of the machines while an alert is sent to the Newsvine team. Rarely will this happen to more than one machine at a time.
During the wee hours between Thursday night and Friday morning, we experienced some of these issues and unfortunately the alerts never made it through so we weren't able to get things back in gear until about 8am or so.
Uptime is very important to us here and as a further measure to ensure this sort of thing won't happen again, we've set up external alerts outside the Newsvine network to check the health of the system.
Thanks for the patience this morning, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
