Josh is getting beaten by a horse -- which is somewhat appropriate given his well-documented support of the glue industry.
Beginning today, all Newsvine writers and seeders can access their earnings pages. Hooray! This release comes with a caveat, however:
Although the site has tripled its unique visitors since May, recording our best month ever in July, you may have noticed that ads have been very slow to roll in. This disappoints us, because even though we're now visited by several hundred thousand users a month, the site (and all other sites within the FM Publishing family, including Digg, Fark, Metafilter, etc.) still has a high level of unsold inventory. To the average web user, less ads is a good thing, but we're very concerned about helping you monetize your content and paying our own bills as well!
Our repping firm is almost as new as we are, so we're giving them a good solid chance to increase sales, and we hope to see the results in the coming weeks. Selling ads on new properties is not as easy as one might think.
So what does this mean for you, the contributor? Well, it means that the current number you see on your earnings page just represents the one ad we ran for a couple of weeks in June, so it may seem pretty low. It obviously does not reflect any contributions before June, or in the month of July. We're not able to give "real-time" earnings for several reasons, the most important being that there is a lag between when page views are registered and when the advertiser approves and executes payment. We're working to make earnings as real-time as possible, but for now, you should expect a month of lead-time. This short delay also allows us to account for page-view fraud.
We appreciate you bearing with us as we continue to make Newsvine the best place to read, write, and influence the news. Traffic has never been better, we continue to receive great press and interest, but advertising is just taking a bit longer to get going than we would have hoped. Our promise to you from the beginning remains unchanged, however: Where there is money to be made off of your content, you should make most of it. Read, write, and seed for the love of it, and the rest will come naturally.
I don't understand how this could be - I have earned 19 cents. How is that possible? I have not written any article/seed in over a month. (My total to-date is only 5). I have not invited anyone to Newsvine nor was I invited in the first place. So, how did I even make that money?
I'd like to see an option to "donate earnings to Newsvine" since I have already pledged my earnings to Newsvine in a pre-emptive move of shock and awe a long time ago.
I like the "tipping" idea, with a slight modification. In a restaurant, most places add the tip for you if your party consists of 6-8+ people. Likewise, if someone makes X dollars, a certain percent of it should be subtracted as "tip".
Another option that would be useful is to let people "gamble" online. Newsvine should set up a "Newsvine poker room" online where Newsviners can play each other with their earnings. The "house" will take a certain cut of each win.
Yet another option that would be useful to cent-earners like me is "donate to fountain". Newsvine can pick some city fountain where they throw all those pennies and make a wish on behalf of the requesting Newsvine member. That way, Newsvine can say that it carries out "Make-A-Wish" activities.
So, we will have online gaming and charity to add to the current offerings of news dissemination, propaganda propagation - Newsvine could soon become a colossal portal along the lines of Yahoo.
Woah, slow down there cowboy! :D :)
I wonder if it'd be possible to figure out what earnings came from our column, and then what earnings came from which referred/invited users?
The money was for June, so your "Polls - the latest fad on Newsvine" is apparently worth 19 cents. I would also imagine that if anyone were to revisit your older stuff, then that would count as well.

I believe hosting servers for gambling with real money is illegal in the United States.
... it is SO awesome to see my name at the bottom of that photo :)
BTW - Nice work on the Flickr integration ;)
..thanks dude. It's my largest piece of work for newsvine thus far. I hope it gets a ton of mileage.
Well friends... maybe I'm just feeling a bit cranky today but I just can't really get behind the whole give back to newsvine thing.
Please don't get me wrong, I love newsvine and I'm happy to contribute to its success through my participation. However, I believe that the newsvine creators and laborers are being fairly compensated for the work they are doing and that, eventually some of them may stand to make some decent money on the project. It is my hope and belief that the newsvine team is not doing this to their own detriment. If they were, I am not sure my dividend would make any difference.
Part of the way newsvine is marketing itself is that newsvine will share any value gained with those who add value to the site. This arrangement is wonderful, unique, generous, and fair. It seems to me that when we take that money and 'give it back', even with kind-hearted intentions, we are saying that one aspect of the effort they've exerted to stand out in a field of social-newsworking is somewhat unnecessary or unappreciated.
As I said, I may be a bit cranky and I am not trying to crap on somebody's kindness -- I am simply offering my thoughts on the matter.
thank you newsvine. i look forward to cashing your check soon.
In that case... you want my $0.97 too?
Hey guys, I got a question. How do you make money? I heard something about advertising. If that's how you do it, how do you advertise? I just started last week and haven't really heard the ins and outs of everything, but I really love the site. -Aper3Caper
Huh.. so it was that easy to get enough for a Hummer? SWEET
you totally strike me as the type of guy that would drive a hummer.
Heh... this reminds me of good-ol' days at the Seattle Funplex, spending hours and hours getting tickets only to turn them in for.... some Bit-O-Honeys and a styrofoam plane.
Do not EVEN put Bit-O-Honeys in the same category as styrofoam planes. The Honeys are money. "Filling removers", if you will.
Dude! When all you have is 390 tickets, and a plane is 330... you can bet your shiny dime I'm using my last 60 to buy 4 Honeys.
Ahhh... and the best way to score those tickets? Six kids standing around the whack-a-mole, each covering a hole.
I dunno...Seattle Funplex doesn't have one of those kiddie strength-testers? You set it to "4-year-old" "female" mode and then pound the heck out of it. Tickets come out by the sheets. My nephew is the shark of the local Chuck E. Cheese. First person I know who got the Disney-branded plastic backpack in one outing.
I for one am proud of now being upgrade to provide a nickel's worth of mirthy wisdom (as opposed to the previous pre-stagflation maladjusted .02ยข worth). Pardon me, I have to go have my Sally Field cry time.
Where to spend that .20 will be the highlight of my Newsvine adventure!
...and is it possible to get that in pennies please?
...and is it possible to get that in pennies please?
Yes, but there is a service charge of .21
I'd give you my 2 cents on this one.. but I've only earned one!

I didnt get this in my watchlist, im sad
I just noticed the links to Charity Navigator next to the listed charities - an excellent idea!. It is indeed a great website that is a must see before donating. I personally like to check and see exactly how exorbitant the CEO salary is...(the site also tells you what % the CEO salary is of total expenses).
Good Work Newsvine Team!
When are we going to have the "Donate to Newsvine" button?
Every ad is a "donate to newsvine" button. :)
Just wondering... are July earnings coming any time soon?
Elliot have you found out when we can expect the July earnings? Not that I'm in it for the money but since they promoted the payment system and that distributions would be monthly then that's what should happen. I'm looking forward to 50cents for July.
Nope... still waiting... I suppose I could e-mail the team, but I don't want to be too much of a pest.
Surely someone will check the blog for new comments at some point...
Personally I think they should wait till October.
The sooner the better. I'm hoping to get up to $10 so I can start my Christmas shopping!!
It's starting to look like you may get your wish...
Woohoo! Another 43 cents! Earlier today, I spoke too soon. July's posted. : )
Anyone else notice the comments/RSS feeds have essentially been rebooted?
:: confused ::
What do you mean?
Anyone notice there are more feeds available than there were before? Check your control panel. :)
...probably why the RSS feeds got "rebooted" :)
You're in Easy Mode. If you prefer, you can use XHTML Mode instead. |
