Introducing Newsvine Live

Another week, another new feature. These things are becoming so common now that you'd think we have some sort of redesign in the works. Hmmm, do we?

This week's new feature is something we call "Newsvine Live" and it's available via the Backyard (for now) and at live.newsvine.com as well. Newsvine Live is an (almost) live view into what's happening on Newsvine. You'll see new stories, new seeds, new comments, new votes, new comment votes, and perhaps a few more things there. Additionally, we've added the Newsvine Live Chat module in there in case you want to talk to people as you're camped out watching things fly by.

Newsvine Live will draw the inevitable comparisons to Digg Spy, and for the moment, those comparisons are fair. This is just a first crack and you'll hopefully be seeing it used in many other ways in the near future.

So kick around on Newsvine Live for a little while and let us know what you like about it and what you'd like to see in the future.

Incidentally, we're also quietly making visible the Newsvine Archive (also available via the Backyard). The Newsvine Archive is a comprehensive listing of all the articles and seeds published to Newsvine every day... updated every hour.

Both Newsvine Live and the Newsvine Archive are great ways to discover new content before it has a chance to hit the front page. By exposing new content in this manner, we hope to further tune the flow of information around the 'Vine.

  • Enjoy this article? Help vote it up the 'Vine.

This is amazing... definitely a "Digg Spy" killer ;) Great work, guys. Excellent use of dynamic web scripting, I must say.

And I'm liking the Archive as well.

I just stopped in for a chat. Try it folks, works great! I don't know how I'll ever do any work!

How do I get back in the Chat?

Is there a way to filter the live view? What if you only want to view new articles, or just new comments?

This would be great. Esp. if you're really only interested in new stories. Another addition to this would be a way to limit "live" to only a certain tag or sections. Something like: http://live.newsvine.com/technology

I second or third this request! it would be great to have a way to filter this view so I don't see every comment vote unless I want to!

So, uh, does the chat work with more than 15 people in it? There was an, "intensive beta test" of the chat that I'm sure you've heard about this weekend and it crashed fairly often.

Just a quick bug report -- the "Live" ticker will attribute answers to the Question of the Day to their authors and, thanks to votes, you can even work out who said what based on votes rather than posts.

Cool feature though.

What's the time delay? I've seen some of my own votes show up 20 minutes or so after I cast them.

Delay should never be more than 10 minutes.

Now I don't have to hit refresh every 3 seconds. Thanks guys.

I, uh, second Noah's comment pretty much completely.

Great idea but it doesn't seem very "Live" to me, more like Newsvine Deja Vu. It suddenly stops dead, you hit the Refresh button, and then you get the same events looping over and over again. Still some bugs to be sorted?

Looks like a great feature. Sadly whenever I seem to come online most people are asleep so it's fairly dead.

One question that keeps bugging me. How come the font in all Newsvine screen shots is different to what I see? The screenshot one looks sans-serif whilst the one I see is serif.

I shot the serif.

I think the image compression is just making the font look like a serif -- a bit of an illusion based on the artifacts?

That's a shame, because I think it looks a million times better than the current title font. In fact, it's the only big thing I'd change about this web site.

Great new feature! It's neat to see the sort of patterns in usage that this will show. Knowing when people are actively commenting and perusing could help in learning when to post.

I wonder -- is there a way that people on our watch and/or friend list could be flagged somehow?

Damn, that's cool! Now I won't have to stay awake at night wondering "who in the name of all that's holy is voting for my crap?" I can finally leave a comment in an article by Killfile without being #179! It's a brave new world!

Hee hee! I just saw myself voting for my own comment!

I'm getting a real kick out of watching people do that.

And for the record, it caught me voting for my own seed, plus voting for vicaxp's "Malboned" comment on the Vinespeak thread. Heh.

The whole thing is very addicting, you guys are going to get me fired! But I like it!

I felt a little embarrassed voting for all of my seeds and comments before Newsvine Live. Now it looks like most people are doing it, so this has been very therapeutic for me.

Somehow I suspected that, but thank you confirming it. Now I'm not even going to need my therapist anymore. I heard there was a lot of intellectual masturbation at the Newsvine Drunk contest, but I haven't heard yet about the other type. :-)

This is really a sweet feature. The next thing to do would be to give us the ability to "customize" Live (i.e. by tags). That way I can only stare at articles about foreign affairs, Manchester United, France, Afghanistan, oil, and Monkeys.

It's great - here's an observation, just in case it matters to you. In the case of the "Question of the Day" (another great feature, btw), the tool reveals, by two different means I've found, who made particular comments (not to mention who voted for them). I think that it's not really a big deal, but I thought I'd mention it on the off chance that it was overlooked.

I think one of the best things about this feature is that it has the effect of raising my awareness of authors and stories that I wouldn't see otherwise. I watched 'live' for a good part of today and noticed a lot of names I've never seen before. It may be my imagination but it also seemed like there was a different mix of articles on the front page than their usually is.

I also like seeing my name scroll by. It seems like there is enough of a delay that I can do something and then go watch it happen on newsvine live. Maybe I am easily amused.

Great new features, only one issue here...
The archive page gets to be ridiculously long as the day goes on, and loading it takes forever/lots of memory that slows down the browser. Perhaps it could be broken into multiple pages in some way? By hour? I don't know, but that's not for me to decide. Designing things seems to be what you guys are great at.
