Call it a redesign. Call it Newsvine 2.0. Call it whatever you want, but today Newsvine is proud to announce the first major overhaul of our site since launching a little more than a year ago. It's an exciting thing for the team and for the now 600,000 people who visit the site every month because it not only provides a hugely enhanced front page but also showcases a lot of the great technology we've been building behind the scenes over the last several months.
Newsvine Evergreen begins today with the relaunch of the front page but is part of a much bigger effort to spread the vine outside the walls of our own domain and into all corners of the internet and blogosphere; the goal being to bring the news to wherever it naturally wants to go.
So what's new so far?
The most common request we get on Newsvine is that people want to emphasize or de-emphasize certain parts of the front page. We have our own ideas for what the front page of a news site should look like and you have yours. Most major news sites attempt to solve this problem by maintaining their editorially imposed front page and then offering a "My" page which users can play around with and customize. The result of this strategy is almost always two-fold: 1) Barely anyone customizes. 2) Even among those who customize, there is hesitancy among users to give up their daily reading of the front page in favor of the "My" page. This is evident from sites like ESPN and Yahoo News, both of which have feature-rich "My" pages but do a ton more traffic on their front pages.
So the question for us became, how do we provide a front page that contains the ideals of a major news site but still allows for complete customization? The answer: modularization. The new Newsvine front page begins as we think many users would like it: big top story, most popular seeds up top, most active stories prominently placed, and so on down the list. But as you go down each column, you'll notice tons of new things which you may like better than the things at the tops of the pages. If you do, just start draggin' stuff around until you're happy. Feel free also to close modules you don't use or add new ones that aren't in the default set.
Another frequent request we've gotten over the past year is to beef up localized content around the Vine. Since weather is a staple of any local news diet, we're now automatically detecting your general location based on IP address and serving you up a 5-day forecast right on the front page, courtesy of Weather Underground. We are also now the only major news site that gives you the option to display your temperature in Kelvin.
Did you hear that? We said Kelvin! So now when it's freezing outside, you can switch over to Kelvin and bask in the illusion that it's a balmy 270!
We've also gone through and collected the local news RSS feeds from hundreds of newspaper sites around the country so we can automatically show you your local news in a module alongside the rest of your content.
Our live feed of all actions occurring within Newsvine now takes a seat at the grownups' table with this redesign. Newsvine Live is a great way to discover new content before it gets popular, and it's an easy way to get yourself some exposure as well.
Sometimes you're not in the mood to read articles and would rather get a visual tour of what's newsworthy on any given day. The News in Pictures is a continuously updated slideshow -- with captions -- of all the latest content coming in from the AP. Sure you'll see the occasional unflattering mug shot of an escaped convict, but we're actually quite surprised and pleased with the general quality of the photos that roll through this module on a daily basis. We have other plans for this module which include accepting user submissions, but for now, enjoy the first incarnation.
Newsvis is a visualization tool we've developed to help you easily identify how much of Newsvine you're really covering. So much news flows through this place that often something extremely voteworthy or commentworthy can be missed entirely by casual users. Newsvis shows you a colorful map of all the latest popular stories and clues you into which ones you may have missed.
Let's say the Associated Press, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Techcrunch, and every other source linked to or hosted on Newsvine just isn't enough for you. Let's say you live in the tiny village of Podoliantsi, and the Podoliantsi Post-Intelligencer is the only news source covering your neighborhood. As long as they have an RSS feed, you can now add it to your Newsvine front page... along with any blog you're interested in, any Twitter RSS feed, or any Del.icio.us linkroll.
Since introducing Newsvine Groups a few months ago, we've watched as people have self-organized into hundreds of social circles around interests, locations, and political ideologies. Groups has never had any marketing behind it or more than a small item in the navbar, but even in this semi-stealth state, it's shown its popularity. With the launch of the new front page, however, Groups gets its own module to showcase a weighted random assortment some of the more active organizations around the Vine. The ultimate goal of Newsvine Groups is to take the pool of hundreds of thousands of people who visit Newsvine and create a vast array of smaller populations, with more meaningful personal ties between members.
Some of the best content on Newsvine comes from the New York Times, The BBC, The Washington Post, and ESPN, but up until now, there's been no easy way to see it all grouped by source. We've started you out with a New York Times module by default so now you can see the latest New York Times seeds all in one place. Prefer Fish 'N Chips to Pastrami On Rye? No problem... switching to the BBC is one click away.
With all of this new content, you can imagine that screen real estate could get a bit tight. For this reason, we've enabled users with gigantic monitors to expand their layout to four columns and a whopping 1300 pixels of width. If you're so inclined, just click the little green button on the right side of the screen and spread out like a polar bear. Hint: We think the coolest two modules to push over there are weather and Newsvine Live. Give it a shot.
We can't say right now, but it's election-related and you can look for it in a few weeks. We hope you enjoy the new and emerging Newsvine, and if you're already a member, we thank you so much for your patronage!
It's a thing of beauty.
The redesign is excellent, it's a nice Tuesday evening surprise!
So I open up my e-mail, and see about 6 requests to join the Open Minded group-- "that's strange," I think to myself. "I would what's giving it more exposure today?" And then I go to the front page-- and it's featured! Now I feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
Excellent redesign team, it's really beautiful. And I like the option for bigger monitors-- my 1680x1050 resolution always seems too big for the web, but not anymore!
I like new things.
Good job.
I liked your old site just fine, but the new one is just that much better. Kudos to you!
Congratulations on a job well done. I am so glad to be here. I love Newsvine and all it has added to my daily life. Thanks.
Looks great, can't wait to learn it.
Nifty, nice work!
I love the new features, extremely useful.
I hate to be the desenting opinion here, but I hate the new design. I'm glad everyone is pumped that new stuff is going on, but take a closer look here and I think you might be as confused as I am. First off there are too many modules and also not enough. Let me explain. All that new stuff on my front page make newsvine look cluttered and busy. I feel like I've just revisited the facebook disater all over again. Yeah, I can turn my modules off, but the clean paralleled design of the old Newsvine is lost. Also, before there was a health module, I liked that, I think several people did. Now it is gone and I can't get it back. Can I have my newsvine 1.0 please? Is there a magic button some where on this site I can press to go back a few hours ago?
Newsvine live is crazy, people just can't keep up with that much data and it drive me nuts.
Newsvis? WTF is this? I understand the concept, but all I really don't see the point? Its and I think I need an explanation of the colors because it doesn't seem like dark orange and dark red are any different. Anyone else reminded of the terror alerts? ( "be on guard if it turns from magenta to aqua!")
Again, I love newsvine and I am all about changing things up, but this is not what I had in mind.
There's a "Whats this?" link in the Newsvis module that should help with this. I believe the point is encouraging participation.
You should also be able to add in custom modules -- there's a button near the top right that does this.
yeah I have seen the "what's this?" like....I know what it is, I just don't understand the point. Also, I am aware I can customize my modules, but I still can't get a health module as far as I know and I also don't understand why the old modules were out dated? Maybe I am just overwhelmed.
hi jstmant:
I just don't understand the point.
The point is (to me at least), that sometimes when I'm using Newsvine, i sort of forget to comment and vote ... because all I'm doing is reading. It's not a conscious thing, I just find myself reading a lot of articles and seeds, and not commenting/voting. In this way, my Newsvine use is a bit anonymous, which means I'm not having as much fun as I could be :-).
Enter Newsvis: it's a mechanism for understanding, given the set of articles and seeds published in the past ~24 hours, exactly how many you have voted on and commented on, relative to how popular those articles are on the Vine.
I use it as a sort of wake-up call. When I see Newsvis, and there are no black bars indicating I've voted and commented on recent stories on the Vine, I then use it to quickly scan articles (usually the more popular ones 1st) to find stories I missed, and then go off to read them ... and also to vote on them and comment on them (as many of them I've already read).
If I'm short on time, I'll click the tag I'm most interested in watching, and then only scan articles in Newsvis that match said tag ... that way, I find what I missed that is most interesting to me.
In short: it's both a way for me to make sure I don't miss anything, as well as to make sure I'm still actively commenting around the site. I should probably point out that I consider Newsvine to be the best experience for me when I'm actively commenting.
Make sense? Perhaps I should write a Newsvis primer?
Maybe I am just overwhelmed.
It's possible ... there's a lot going on :-). Please ask questions if anything is not clear.
Perhaps I should write a Newsvis primer?
Definitely. In particular, please go over this section of the instructions:
Controls
* Mouse-over articles to see vote counts, comment counts, and headlines.
* Click an article to go to Newsvine.com and see the full text and comment thread.
* Mouse-over tags to show their relationship to the articles (if the tag and article are related, the article will light up).
* Click a tag to freeze its tag-to-articles relationship, so you can then mouse-over the related articles.
* Use the Content Type and How Many controls to change the type of content displayed and the count of articles displayed.
---
I'm not sure how other people are doing with this, but I can't find any tags. Also - Content Type? How Many?
Also, before there was a health module, I liked that, I think several people did. Now it is gone and I can't get it back.
Yes you can. :)
Add the Odd News module to your front page.
Then, click on the little wrench in the upper right corner of that Odd News module.
Look at the drop-down menu inside there.
Choose Health.
Save.
Ta-da!
When i go to add modules to my front page, i dont see any of the following:
health, odd-news or anything under more.
None of them are on my front page, and i see nothing listed in the options to add module with their name.
Add any module. Then click the wrench icon, and change it.
Make sense? Perhaps I should write a Newsvis primer?
Yes, please do.
Also, when did Tom leave myspace?
I am so confused.
But this looks really nice.
Make sense? Perhaps I should write a Newsvis primer?Yes, please do.
The Newsvis Primer is here.
Hook it up!
Crack, I tell you. Crack!
It's like rediscovering something you love all over again.
I think I'm feeling overwhelmed...
Is there any API to build our own modules? Or possibly a universal API like the Universal Widget API that Netvibes created? It would be pretty cool if we could bring in a module from Netvibes or bring Newsvine modules to Netvibes or the desktop.
If you click the "new module" button, you can put in the URL of any RSS feed you want ;-)
Right, but that's just an external RSS feed, not a true module.
Just when the help group seemed to be catching us up on features, so many to learn. Is Aine, ready to tutor RSS feeds?
Is Aine, ready to tutor RSS feeds?
Next month. :) For now, let's get used to dealing with what's there on the front page.
Right, but that's just an external RSS feed, not a true module.
Yeah, true, but so what? If your goal is just to put the page back as it was before it works fine.
Ahh but that's not what I'm asking. The question was if there was an API where in we could make our own modules. Say for instance I want a module like the new Live module. But instead of cycling through all the news on the vine it only goes through my list of friends. So is there a way we can create our own modules.
I also asked about the Netvibes Universal Widget API because if Newsvine used that API I could also put my newly made module on my Netvibes page, or Google home, or wherever this API is supported if it ever is. At the same time, say I prefer the weather module the Netvibes provides over the one Newsvine provides. If Newsvine is allowing me to import external modules, I could add that module to my Newsvine page. I'm just wondering how truly modular this is going to be. As I have Netvibes as my homepage I'd love to have Newsvine specific modules in there, much in the same way I have Newsvine RSS feeds in there now.
So yes, if your only goal is to make Newsvine look the way it did before then you're set, which obviously should be the first goal of a change like this. I'm just wondering what direction they are heading towards in the future, and if they've considered these possibilities.
Aine...Next month. :) For now, let's get used to dealing with what's there on the front page.
Well if we must wait I can slow up enough for everyone to come up to speed first. *smirk*
I've been working on it this afternoon and you should see the disaster of a front page that I have.
LOL
Forest
We'll look into allowing the addition of externally generated modules. It's a bit tricky but if people want it, then we want it.
Well you never know, I may not speak for the people :) I was just wondering which direction this was going in.
Hey -- There are 2 things that (IMO) could use some tweaking.
Let me know if I should submit a bug report.
1.) The comment tracker on the front page isn't working right. Comment counts can't be cleared, and the tracker renders strangely the first time it is opened after a front page visit.
2.) Can we have articles open up in the same window on the Newsvis module, please? I have Firefox configured to open up links in a tab but, for some reason, it keeps opening in a whole new window.
Thanks!
D
Yeah, overriding the user's preferred way of opening links is not good manners. I like links to just open in the current window unless I specify otherwise.
Click the wrench on the upper right-hand corner of the Newsvis module.
Switch "article popup" to NO and they'll open in the same window.
Anytime you have a concern about a module -- take a look at its setting by clicking the wrench.
Update -- while the feature is supposed to do what I described -- it doesn't appear to do it.
I'm sure it's a bug that they'll fix.
(If you submit it as a bug.)
Yeah, I saw the wrench after I made this comment. Still doesn't work as advertised, though. However, I'm confident this will be resolved shortly.
Very cool. I was just doing my afternoon seeding and accidentally hit the Newsvine bookmark instead of the Seed one, and was met by "sweet Jiminy Christmas!" I'm still playing around, but I like how customizable it is.
Make love to me Newsvine robot blog updater!
Yay, it has arrived.
Hallelujahs music plays.
And double yay, both my scripts still work, i still have rounded yummyness and clear conv tracker, double yum.
Now this is my new homepage. All that would be better is the option to create custom parts of the site, like google did.
Yowza!!
Awesomeness aplenty. :)
Congrats on the launch, guys -- it looks great.
Let's just say (hypothetically) that I work for a company that publishes several local newspapers. And then let's say (again, hypothetically) that Newsvine doesn't have these papers in their list of feeds. You know, so if I say my zip code is 66047, I get headlines for Kansas City, rather than Lawrence, which is where I really live. So let's just say I could hook you up with the feeds for the Lawrence paper (this is all hypothetical, of course) -- would you accept them?
Or, more to the point: how do you choose the "local" papers and can newspaper publishers submit them?
The way it's currently set up, we have one default feed for each region. Eventually we may have multiple feeds for a region, but we don't have that yet.
I'm not that familiar with Kansas City geography, but our DMA database has Lawrence in the Kansas City metro area. You can add your own feeds for Lawrence if you'd like, but they wouldn't be the default feed for users from Lawrence. They'll be available for other users when they go to add feeds.
Fair enough. Here in Lawrence, no one considers us to be in the KC metro, but that certainly is the closest "big" city. But, most Lawrencians wouldn't consider KC news to be very "local," I don't think.
Thanks for the answer!
Mark, can you please set up the BFE metro for Jeff?
Or you could just offer me a job already and I could get out of BFE?
I'd also like to see multiple sources for the local feeds.
For example where I am, in Montréal, you have Le Devoir as the local feed, and while it's a great, and really high-brow, paper, it's in French and Newsvine is an English-language site, and #5 on the Code of Honor asks us to keep it English.
We're actually looking for advice like this. Feel free to provide a better alternative. Eventually we'll be enabling multiple local feeds for a given region. We just wanted to make sure we have one for all major regions. I encourage everyone who thinks we made a bad choice or maybe we don't have one at all, by all means, let us know.
If the Montréal Gazette has a feed it would be the best. It's big, well respected, and in English. However I highly doubt they have a feed - at least I couldn't find one just now.
They have a feed for their forums http://communities.canada.com/MONTREALGAZETTE/forums/rss.aspx?ForumID=275&Mode=0, but that's not exactly news. canada.com seems to have a huge network of all the local papers of the major Canadian cities, but they don't currently have RSS feeds.
http://rss.canada.com/get/?F56
There's that one.
Wow, they do have a feed!
Yeah, canada.com and all the newspapers whose websites are part of it are owned by CanWest Global, one of the largest media firms in the country, ( I think they own stuff in the US too ). They're usually pretty good about being current & relevant when it comes to technology, although there website doesn't seem to follow the trend :)
Quick Tip: You know how I found that feed? The little feed icon that Firefox displays in the Address Bar when a live feed is detected. I've practically given up on looking for a link to an RSS feeds page because Firefox does a good job of finding them for me. :)
Only if the web developer puts a meta tag telling firefox the feed is there.
I use a directory scanner to search for RDF files.
My suggestion is to leave #5 of the COD altogether. Then again, I've been wanting to be able to seed articles in languages other than English since the very beginning. I've suggested it several times actually. Yes, I'm stubborn. I always hoped Newsvine would really be a global community, and not too US-centered.
Good job, you guys! You're the smartest!!
...and the coolest!!
What Redruby said, ditto, thanks!! :~)
and the most handsome...
Hey, I'm the most handsome, let's not get carried away.....
Looks great, I love the customization of the home page and all the additional features, keep up the good work!
I like it. But the best part is that you fixed the comment tracker in Firefox!!!
When is the cool new theme going to be on the other pages???
This just totally rocks guys. I'll be up all night playing with everything....
Forest
Awsome!
Wait for it....
Fantastic work, guys. Is this why you've been too busy to respond to all of my recent whiny complaints?
;)
You're in Easy Mode. If you prefer, you can use XHTML Mode instead. |
