The Election '08 Ballot on Facebook
Hey, this is Rob Newsvine intern 2.0. Today I'm happy to announce Newsvine has just released a Facebook application for the upcoming 2008 U.S. Presidential elections. We've got some exciting election stuff coming up and this is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.
If you've got Facebook, you can go ahead and install my masterpiece Newsvine's Election '08 widget to your Facebook profile.
Mike and the team gave me free reign over development and design of the new Facebook hotness (read: I'm running the show over here). The Election '08 Facebook application allows you to vote on the 2008 U.S. Presidential candidates, or denounce politics all together (my personal favorite). Once we get some votes tallied, we'll be displaying a breakdown of results by regions, schools, etc on Newsvine's Facebook Election '08 Headquarters.
The Election '08 Facebook application will also display data from our yet-unannounced top-secret election coverage here on Newsvine. Stay tuned.
Alright, I'm done hijacking the blog. Rob out.
Install the Election '08 Facebook App
Looks cool.
What exactly did it take to build the app, Rob? I work with SlideShare.net and one of our devs is going to be building a SlideShare app for Facebook and they've made it my job to figure out how it's done.
How about a proper Newsvine Facebook app that displays a person's seeds, votes, comments, etc.?
How about a proper Newsvine Facebook app that displays a person's seeds, votes, comments, etc.?
I defiantly second this.
Smaran, the Facebook platform API is actually a joy to work with. I built the app over the weekend and most of that time was spent creating images. The actual programming wasn't bad at all Facebook provides some decent documentation and a great discussion forum, but the most helpful thing I found by far is the example "footprints" application they provide. The PHP REST library that comes with the example is very well documented and takes all of the guess work out of making Facebook API calls.
More Facebook apps are a possibility :)
I would also like to see a Facebook app that displays a person's recent articles, seeds, and votes.
Great job Rob, bringing Newsvine and Facebook together is a wonderful (if dangerously addictive) idea. Just one question: is there going to be something similar that deals with British (or any non-American) politics? While I have an interest in what happens in American politics, I actually have a say (well vote) in British politics.
Ditto, I'm sure it's a lovely Facebook application that lots of people will install; but I'm surprised the first one to come from Newsvine wasn't encompassing news stories, votes and comments.
I won't be installing this one, since I'm in the UK and it has no relevance to be; but as I said, I'm sure it's lovely and well-built.
I agree, something for us Brits would be nice.
This is excellent. I've posted/shared it on my profile, installed it, and voted. :)
Very, very cool! Thanks for all of your hard work, Rob & Newsvine task-masters! :)
It's a little simple right now, but it looks cool. I hope those breakdowns and stuff don't take too long to put up, right now most of my friends won't see a point in adding it.
If this widget manages to catch on before Facebook puts out their election module (like they've always done) and has more features (hint, hint), Newsvine will have itself some great publicity.
The images sure are flashy. ; )
Open Letter to Newsvine Team:
Could you please hire some interns who create features I can actually use?
Facebook? Newsvine Mobi?
An example: this morning -- I had to make myself lunch. A feature that takes care of that would be really great. He can even call it: Lunch 2.0
Or -- at the very least, he could focus his attention over at Virb.
:)
Also -- I'm subtitling this comment: "That's not how Eric would have done it."
At least he's gotten the hang of pre-announcing features without providing any hints about what to expect.
*cough*editing comments*cough*
..
*cough*fixed comment HTML parser*cough*
*cough*editing comments*cough*
Honestly -- this feature would probably be fairly easy to implement. With that in mind -- people have been asking for that feature for ages now, it may be the most universally "requested" feature.
I'm certain that the they know people want it. Putting two and two together -- I have to assume they have their reasons for not implementing the feature.
And, in the end, spending a little more time looking at the preview would alleviate the problem anyway. I make mistakes as often as (or more often than) anyone else -- and more often than not, it's because I've rushed to post a comment without proofing it.
I agree with Brian Ford, surprisingly (yes, I've surprised myself). I very rarely check my comment preview - but have forced myself to do so a lot more so I don't look like a tit and publish stupid mistakes.
I even use the Spell Checker and everything!
Err:

I'm certain that the they know people want it. (The ability to edit comments.)
Putting two and two together -- I have to assume they (meaning the staff) have their reasons for not implementing the such a popularly requested feature.

JESUS NEWSVINE STAFF! WHAT'S IT TAKE TO GET A COMMENT EDITING FEATURE?!
Seriously... I've been asking for comment editing since the private beta. $1 to anyone who can find an old pre-public beta comment of mine asking for the feature. (Remember, 1 USD is about 45 INR! That's 90 Cadbury Eclairs.)
That feature would create so much chaos. It's already tricky to track down how a thread devolved into the flame war it became. With feature editing it would be even worse.
I think we're mostly talking about a very short editing window, say 90 seconds.
And it looks like we might get it!
Nobody wants to see users have the ability to go back and manipulate what they've said. It would definitely be chaos, as you say, hemphill.
If the comments didn't show until after the 90 seconds were up, I could see it.
A facebook app? Great!
Now if only I had even the slightest desire to use facebook...
You sir, are not 'down with the kids.'
No, sir, I am not. And for that I am eternally grateful to my good sense.
My wife says she'll be embarassed for me if I get on it. Ergo, I can't.
So, I guess I need to re-join facebook in order to check this out.
JAWESOME!!
I was wondering what all these app things were, this is the first one I've installed
In the mighty words of Stephen Colbert "I CALLED IT!"
Great API
Very nice. I second the idea of a 'Newsvine' App though.
This may be obvious, but in addition to breakdowns by region and school and whatnot, it'd be nice to see who my friends are supporting.
Elliot that's definitely one of the things I'll be rolling out once we get more votes in. Give me a few days and you'll start to see some metrics and graphs on our Facebook page.
Nice Job
They should make your comments an ever deeper green in payment
Nice work, I'm thinking about doing some newsvine apps as well. I hear the API is quite nice to work with, think it would be a good place for a novice programmer to start in regards to web apps?
The Facebook API is a great place to start. My specialty is graphic design, so I'm a novice when it comes to web app programming. The learning curve on the Facebook API is pretty easy, so I highly recommend just diving in.
Good to hear that; since I'm probably in the same 'web designer not die-hard programmer' situation. I might give something a go soon, too.
I want to vote for multiple people. Isn't that how our election system works now? :)
Hey Rob,
This is cool, I'm really digging a lot of the Fbook apps that keep rolling out and good to see Newsvine getting in on the action. I hope the NV team properly rewards you for this masterstroke!
I'm not sure how often those "recent" headlines are supposed to refresh, but I still have the same headlines I had when I added the app yesterday morning.
Rob, I got a request for you. It seems that the "Latest X Headlines:" is pulling just from the AP feed. Well, the AP is not so good at reporting on any of the non-big name candidates. Maybe this should pull from all of newsvine instead. Hell, you can get the AP anywhere, showoff the unique stuff from newsvine.
Yeah, or a tag feed, maybe? barack-obama
With the candidate-specific headlines it pulls from the candidate's tag. So if you vote for Obama you get barack-obama headlines.
The facebook news feeds in those boxes are also not updating yet. We have to send out headlines from Newsvine and update everyone's widget from our end once thats in place the feeds will update every hour.
Ahhh, okay, so it isn't updating from this end yet. That makes sense now. :)
Now, if we could just get everyone to tag the candidates' stories with firstname-lastname tags, we could all help keep those Facebook modules up to date (once they're updating from here, that is).
How are the candidates ordered in the list? It seems fairly random - not alphabetical, yet not by current popularity polls either? If that were the case Edwards would be on top for the Dem's and Romney would be on top for the Republicans, correct?
Just curious.
Who in hell do you think you are? Voting is a privilege - To denounce politics all together is you biz, but what are you doing pretending to have a serious commentary on it? Why don't you just leave that to the grownups, now? Because if you don't care, your results and information will be meaningless.
Who are you talking to?
Why is Al Gore included in the Democrats? Unless I'm behind on the news, he hasn't announced he's seeking the Presidency at all.
This can mess up the standings by causing people to vote for a candidate that isn't even running. For example, I cast my vote for Kucinich at the moment, but if Al Gore were to announce, the vote would change.
You're allowed to change your vote on the Facebook Election 08 application, Greg. As the field narrows, the votes will change... in other words, just because your candidate drops out or whatever, it doesn't mean you can't still vote for one of the candidates that is still in the race.
I realize that we can change. My problem is that Gore hasn't even announced, thusly, he shouldn't be on a list of possible candidates. I'm torn between a candidate that is actually running, or a candidate that isn't even one.
Gore right now has 3% of the Democratic votes on Facebook, yet he isn't a candidate, as such, he's taking votes away from other candidates who are actually running. Until he announces, I don't see why he is listed as a possible candidate.
Until he announces, I don't see why he is listed as a possible candidate.
Probably because many people (outside of Newsvine even) think he may be the "un-Candidate"... doing an end run around the whole established process. I don't think so, but I could be wrong. ;)
Greg,
Consider him a write-in.
Very nice. Definitely added to my page!
Hey Rob - nice job! I added it to my page too! Hopefully all my friends will see it and add it too
Been frequenting the boards. Came across this complaint
That's not cool.
???
Just out of curiousity, can you share what the complaint was for those of us who are not Facebook users? Does it have to do with Newsvine?
Yes. Apologies. Didn't realize you wouldn't be able to see it.
I just couldn't believe that the top three candidates among my friends were Hillary, Mitt, and Barack . . . so I did some tallying myself.
This is what I found after looking at all 190 of my friends profiles. Among those who had the Election '08 application:
18 supported Ron Paul
1 supported Mitt Romney
1 supported Hillary
1 supported BarackObviously they left someone out when they were tallying the score.
Is anyone else noticing the same thing?
I'm angry. And it keeps diverting me to random politics when I click on his name.
That's from a thread, so other stuff was said, but that's the guist.
Looks like the dirty tricks squad at work, doesn't it....?
I don't know. I have like five friends on Facebook. It doesn't make much difference to me. I'm just sort of sitting there and acting as a missionary for the dream of states' rights.
That bug got fixed. I was using the wrong sorting routine on that data (asort instead of arsort), so it jumbled up the results. No political conspiracy, just bad PHP code.
Thats not cool at all ! That really piss's me off to see that.
Very cool, nice job!
You're in Easy Mode. If you prefer, you can use XHTML Mode instead. |
