Sandy Frost, Citizen Journalist
The Newsvine Team is happy to recognize Sandy Frost's recent achievements as a citizen journalist by awarding her the Random Act of Vineness. Sandy's unwavering investigation of the Shriners recently earned her an honorable mention by the Society of Professional Journalists at their annual Excellence in Journalism awards banquet, held in Bellevue, WA.
Being honored alongside major media publications such as The Seattle Times and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Sandy Frost sets an example for other Newsviners and citizen journalists around the world - that any person, with determination and a passion for investigation, can make a difference in the world of journalism.
Nominated by her fellow peers here at Newsvine, we are proud to give Sandy Frost her top branch - for the public recognition of her achievements as an investigative Newsvine Contributor.
Congratulations!
Congrats, I was impressed with the thoroughness of your investigation. You deserve this!
This recognition of your dogged, persistent probe is well deserved, Sandy. Congratulations.
This is doubly awesome! Congratulations and keep up the excellent work. We appreciate it. :)
Persistence! Probably the very first investigative report I remember reading when coming to Newsvine was Sandy Frost's early postings on her persuit of the Shriners. She has made impressive progress. Thanks for being here, Sandy.
At first, I wondered what on earth she was talking about. Then it became clearer that Sandy was on to something. Congratulations again, this time for the RAV.
Awesome! Congratulations, Sandy. :)
Congratulations!
Admittedly, Sandy is a very talented writer but I find her crusade against the Shriners a mite disconcerting, particularly the article where she "exposes" the Shriners oath as having references to Islam in them.
Given, she likely takes more exception to the fact that it's a violent oath (albeit a dramatic, theatrical oath written long ago in the spirit of sensationalism), and not the fact it mentions Allah and Islam.
Naturally, the religion Shriners (and Free Masons, and Eastern Stars, etc) reference in their vows (quite a few, I believe) should be considered irrelevant, in less of course you have negative preconceptions of a certain religion to begin with.
Nevertheless, if the shriners (or at least a small faction thereof) are truly committing crimes, I applaud her work and civic responsibility.
Once again, many congratulations Sandy. You epitomize citizen journalism at its professional best.
Brava, Sandy!
Quick question: This would make Sandy the first 'viner to earn the RAV branch without all of the other five, wouldn't it? That's pretty cool right there.
That's fast track recognition. Congratulations Sandy, I now have to go read your work.
Well Sandy will have to get right on that! I'm sure, however, that she'll gain the rest of those branches in due time.
I'll be reading about the Shriners if anyone needs me.
This is great news, and a win for Citizen Journalism on Newsvine. (And, of course -- I'd love it if you joined the CJ group!)
Congrats. I don't know that we've crossed paths yet but I'm going to start watching for your bylines.
This is the first I hear of this, but my last final is tomorrow, so after that I'm gonna do some reading about that shriners tag.
Congrats! Hooray for Citizen-Journalism.
Don't the shriners get sick kids care they need in hospitals?
Yes, and they do it for free.
Thanks,
Sandy
Thank you all for your kind comments.
If you go to my site,"by Sandy Frost," you can read my reactions to these two awards as well as a little bit more about how I got here.
Again, my SPJ award is for both "by Sandy Frost" and Newsvine.com, which includes everyone here.
We are really a team working together in this virtual newsroom as we pioneer, re-invent and create a new form of news media that now stands shoulder to shoulder with giants like the Seattle Times, the Seattle PI and MSNBC.com.
Thanks again,
Sandy
