Esteemed Members of the Newsvine Community,
It is our great pleasure to announce today that Newsvine has been acquired by msnbc.com. There are so many exciting things to share about this partnership and what it means for you that it's hard to know where to start. In the spirit of good journalism, let's start with the five W's: Who, What, Where, When, and Why.
Who
Msnbc.com is a privately run news organization started by Microsoft and NBC in 1996. The site is one of the most decorated, highly trafficked news sites on the web, serving more than 29 million unique visitors per month. Contrary to popular belief, msnbc.com is run independently from both Microsoft and NBC and even the MSNBC news channel. It is its own organization, headquartered in Redmond, and has been growing and profitable for several years now. Msnbc.com employs about 200 people.
What
As desired by both companies from the outset, Newsvine will continue operating independently, just as it has been since launching in March of 2006. Msnbc.com is committed to maintaining and growing the community and features that have made Newsvine what it is today. In other words, Newsvine will be the same Newsvine you've always known, only stronger. Over the next few years, Newsvine technology and content will make its way onto msnbc.com, and vice-versa where it makes sense. Our users' columns and content will remain as they have been, as we work hard with msnbc.com to implement improvements and enhancements.
Where
Seattle! Of course! This entire process, from courtship to marriage, took the entire summer, and although there were several companies who came knocking along the way, we're thrilled that the right partner just happened to be in our backyard. Working together is a hundred times more efficient when you're a 15 minute drive -- and not a plane flight -- apart. It's a big win for us, a big win for msnbc.com, and a big win for the region as well.
When
We officially became part of the msnbc.com family on Friday, October 5th but we've been talking since May. Since Newsvine launched, about a year and a half ago, we've fielded a lot of phone calls and emails from organizations inquiring about working together, but never did it seem quite as right as it did with the msnbc.com team.
Why
Why would a young, efficient independent news startup become part of a large organization? For us, the answer is simple: it's all about growing the community and spreading the idea of participatory news as far and wide as possible. Although going from zero to over a million users a month in less than two years is heartening, msnbc.com operates on another scale entirely. While Newsvine may be well known in early adopter circles, we want every college student, every farmer, every weekend journalist, and every household to have their own branch on the 'Vine. In order to spread this idea further, we could have gone out and raised a lot of money, quadrupled our staff, and gone it alone, but when one of the finest news organizations in the world is headquartered right across Lake Washington, the potential of partnering with such a great team is dramatic. We feel strongly that we can learn from the successes of their experienced team, in a way that will empower Newsvine to become the worldwide mouthpiece of the citizen journalist.
So What Does It All Mean For You?
So many good things! Following is a list of things you can look forward to:
- Increased exposure for Newsvine writers. Remember when Killfile broke the news of the Virginia Tech shooting 22 minutes before the Associated Press? What about when Corey Spring got an exclusive interview with Dave Chappelle? When important moments like these occur on Newsvine, why shouldn't they also be put in front of 29 million people on msnbc.com? What about when a Newsviner builds up an audience for a weekly entertainment column like Steve Watts' Lost in the Vines? Why shouldn't great content like that be put on an even bigger stage? We think it should, and although Newsvine and msnbc.com will remain independent brands, we're going to spend the next several months figuring out ways to get the best content in front of the biggest audiences possible.
- A bigger, more diverse community. Msnbc.com's user base is spread across the world in every age, income, and demographic group. You'd be hard pressed to find a town in the United States which doesn't count some of its residents as readers. It is our hope that eventually, readers of both Newsvine and msnbc.com will be able to jump from site to site and share in the benefits that each destination offers.
- Speed, reliability and uptime. As a cost-conscious startup, Newsvine has made do with an efficient hardware footprint and no full- time operations staff. The upshot of this is keeping expenses down. The downside, however, is that during heavy spikes of activity and off-hour periods, the site can occasionally slow down or seem less reliable. Under this new partnership, Newsvine will move to the geographically redundant, world-class data centers that house msnbc.com. Bigger, faster machines and more of them. 24/7 monitoring. There may not be a news site in the world which scales better than msnbc.com, and we look forward to benefiting from their excellent infrastructure.
- A slightly bigger staff, able to evolve the site and provide features and support to the community without cutting any corners. Thus far, each Newsvine employee has had to wear a great variety of hats, and in some instances we have been strung very thin. The ability to add staff members in needed areas is crucial to our success as a business, as a web site and as a community. We look forward to providing excellent support and service to our users as our community grows dramatically during the forthcoming months and years. The team that set out to create the vision from day one will be freed up to continue developing the features and tools that make the magic of Newsvine possible. We will be armed with the resources and access to bring the best content produced by Newsviners to the world at large - bridging the gap between citizen and journalist.
- More news and images from more sources. Newsvine's mainstream news and images have always come directly from the Associated Press, and in fact, being the quickest wire-to-web news site in the world has always been something we've taken a lot of pride in. However, with the welcoming of msnbc.com into the fold, we now have the potential to bring you more of the best reporting in the world and some of the most stunning news imagery you'll ever see online.
...and so much more.
We're so excited about all that's in store for the both the msnbc.com and Newsvine community in the weeks, months, and years to come, and we hope you'll join us in helping spread the cause of participatory news to every household with a story to tell or a thought to share.
Open Q&A regarding the Future of Newsvine
More coverage:

So, Mike, how does it feel to not be your own boss anymore?
We'll see come Monday I guess. Newsvine is still going to be run pretty independently though and the msnbc.com staff has been tremendous so far.
Sweet Fennel! I love the internet. It feels cool being one of the original Viners and seeing Newsvine getting worldwide coverage.
Give me an internship!Go Newsvine!
Hey, they should have sold the site to Apple, then they could have made all the fanboys ecstatic with joy when they announced that the new conjoined site would be called iNews.
HUGE congrats are due here, and the move makes perfect sense when one reads the benefits. It is so exciting to be a part of this new beginning and to monitor its development. And after such a short time too, Wow!
This is great news. As long as they let you stay autonomous, it will be a perfect deal. Much deserved
Wow! I am shocked to see this. Congratulations to the Newsvine team for being so successful in such a small amount of time. You are an inspiration for people aspiring to having startups of their own.
I was shocked to see it, and I am cautiously optimistic about it. It is good to see that Newsvine will retain its independence, while gaining the benefits of more exposure. I hope the independence is retained in the long run.
Congrats again, Newsvine staff!
I would have done it for the money myself.
Congratulations! All the Newsvine team should be proud that their hard work has been rewarded and that Newsvine will now have the backing of a very serious media player. It won't be all roses, but the positives seem to massively outweigh any concerns. Well done!
Wow. I'm shocked, but good job all. Congratulations.
There's one main thing on my mind now.
What's going to happen to International news on Newsvine now?
Sadly, the AP news is poor, but Newsvine was heading in a direction as to say they were interested in making it more global. Now that Msnbc have a say in it won't this mean the focus is definitely on America now?
I think MSNBC would want to leverage the global aspect of many Newsviners. After all, it makes business sense and at the end of the day a good business model will ensure Newsvine thrives.
I agree with both your comments there Bozzor, msnbc is certainly not the worst media agency out there, and they are a cut above AP. I think that NV has the sharp side of this sword, and while there will be the usual resistance to any non-American opinion, I think this has more to do with the peasants rather than their masters. However if NV is serious about going global maybe they should outsource world news to a more conducive place for this topic. AP/reuters is a failure in this department and non compliance by the US to international law is a hinderance.
We are totally prepared to take any foreign opinions as long as it is delivered with a romantic accent. That's where the print versions create problems, we're left with pure substance, no ambiance, who likes that? *grin*
*grinning*

Newsvine Community: Thanks!- from the guys who financially backed Newsvine, Second Avenue Partners, for your intelligence, enthusiasm and support. Working on this business has been a complete blast. We will miss the team, and miss the involvement in this fantastic enterprise.
All the best,
Nick Hanauer, Mike Slade, Pete Higgins and Keith Grinstein
I am pretty sure that nick is GOREPORTER using a different ID.

this is an inside Newsvine joke that would only be understood by old and dedicated users, perhaps including that folks helped fund NV*******

Whoa! I owe you guys a big thanks for taking the punt on Newsvine! The blog I have here has helped me with my business and introduced me to some very remarkable people from a broad cross section of the Net community. You backed the right horse from this perspective - WELL DONE!!!
Well, Nick, we thank you for helping to put Newsvine into our world. It's been a fantastic enterprise for many of us as well.
Well, Nick, we thank you for helping to put Newsvine into our world. It's been a fantastic enterprise for many of us as well.
Well from a personal point of view I'd of preferred for Newsvine to have stayed independent. From a capitalist who likes seeing a hard working people get ahead point of view I join in the congratulations and celebration for the Newsvine team. From the looking ahead point of view - I have concerns about where thing are going to go in the future both from my bias about MSNBC in general and how it seems that getting bought up goes a long way to stifling a company as they have to answer to a larger entity that may neglect them. Time will tell though.
GREED. You have no souls, no ideals, no dreams for anything except more money. Shame on you all. You sold out and you can candy-coat that anyway you want, the fact remains.
I thought you left?
Did you think that Newsvine was started without the idea of making as much money as they can in the first place?
Ah and the corporate facism begins already! Deleting comments... I was here in the beginning and never had a comment deleted. Welcome to the new regime, hope you enjoy rampant censorship and corporate imperialism.
If people can't stomach the truth then maybe they need to re-evaluate their values and morals in life. If you put money ahead of everything, in my book, you're a soulless whore. I don't sell out for the buck, I believe in things like integrity and self-respect. But do as you will, I have no illusions that I'm in the minority. Which is why you have the country you do. Yes, it appears in the little things, too, like a giant media conglomerate swallowing up a small independent blog/news service. If that's ok with you -- if you're only concerned about what you can profit from it -- then good for you, live your life. I won't tell you how to do that but I'll be damned if I should be silenced because I disagree and stand for greater issues than what's best for me.
If you can't recognize how calling other users @!$%#ing sell-outs, soulless, and worse is not contrary to reasoned discourse, then I can't say you'll be missed, here from the beginning or not. You've comported yourself quite poorly on this matter, and if anyone should be ashamed wrt to anything in this thread, it's you.
What Enigma seems to have missed is that it cost Newsvine real money (venture-capital supplied money) to have even a six-person staff, to maintain the servers needed for this venture, pay all the other overhead of a business, etc. I heard a figure of $1.5 million in venture capital.
Do you really think they had already made enough on advertising to pay that all back, plus pay salaries and expenses, and pay us in addition? It was clear to me that they might choose to sell at some time. Sorry if it wasn't clear to you. Think about taking a business course sometime.
Well said, Spiffie.
Very well said, spiffie. As always.
Enigma, might I suggest you start your own site that upholds all of your ideals?
Man did Lennon nail it:
Congratulations to all the NV team - they have achieved something that most of us dream of.
We will obviously have to see how all this plays out.
'Bout time.
Good bye free press. We hardly see you anymore. Some of us will miss you; others will console themselves with lots of money and think that's that's the answer.
enigma, you can still always go to digg if you wish. You can start up your own Internet site and say what you like there. Remember, at the end of the say this site belongs to those who came up with the idea and those who came up with the money. They can do with the site as they please: it's THEIRS.
I want someone at Newsvine to be a honest person and say, " I don't care about Newsvine, I need a new car/house." If they want to ban me then fine -- nothing could say censorship any better. Welcome your new corporate masters. I don't.
Bozzor, without us, the community the site would not be what it is today. I guess those with the money have all the say and to hell what anyone else thinks? As for Digg, I already mentioned that it's sad that this whole thing proves Digg and Kevin Rose to be on the moral high ground seeing as he never sold out to corporate interests. The even sadder part is that the newsvine staff can't even be "man" enough to admit that it's mostly all about the money. All this stuff about making the site better and bringing us to a larger crowd is a mere sideshow to the real reasons.
True enough. I'm just waiting for someone to have the spine to say they sold out for the money which is what this is about. Media conglomeration is so good for the free press.... Check out ClearChannel, FOX... you think you'll even recognize Newsvine in a year? lol.
I would think yes, he does, because then Enigma can say he was banned by Newsvine. Let's ignore him.
Enigma,
Don't you get the irony of you being able to make numerous posts here about your angst concerning being censored? Methinks thou dost protest too much.
Here here Phaedrus! Sad state when so many apologists and hanger-ons exist. "what's in it for me?" "Do I get a raise?" "can I put this on my resume?" It's all about greed. Sad, sad state of affairs in this country. I liked Newsvine because it had the balls to defy the corporate interests and be a success; already I've had the first-ever deleted comment in this thread no less. Didn't take long for the lackeys to start kissing ass.
Phaedrus and Enigma,
Why don't you two go and start your own site and when corporate America offers you big bucks for it you can tell them no thanks. Otherwise, your rants got old a long time ago.
And the even funnier thing is that we all wonder and lament the fact that we are all fed lies and propoganda by the news media. Is it any wonder when the news media exists solely to make a profit? It's not about news, or educating anyone to what's real, it's about mindless entertainment, and feeding us the propoganda to make us all good little wal-mart consumers and to lead us into believing that we really have a choice come election time. Newsvine has played right into that role by giving a forum to all the basest instincts of man, fighting amongst ourselves about what is right and wrong in the world, while the real movers and shakers are out there continuing to rape and plunder our world. It's the classic magic art of misdirection. Keep the cats occupied with the moldy cheese rolled out in front of our noses, while the rats destroy all that we know. I see it now!! Excuse some of us for seeing through the charade. You can feed it to us, but we don't have to bite.
Hey Jason, Digg has been offered big bucks by many large corporations for quite some time now.
Phaedrus and enigma,
What single event in the last two years has led you to hold the staff in such low regard? I personally believe that last two years of quality and attention to the userbase has earned them at least enough trust to wait and see how this plays out.
Sure I have misgivings but I'm not about to assume that the staff "sold us out" or any such thing without any proof.
In the end this is a business, and it always was a business from the very beginning. The staff has always been up front about this but has also been very good about addressing our concerns and growing the site in ways to benefit the users.
Um, how about the total lack of integrity and selling out to MS for big bucks? And the BS coverup "it'll be so much better, that's why we did it." BS. Say you did it for the money! Have a @!$%#ing spine!
Whatever happened before you can forget; this is a different ballgame now. I don't wish Newsvine staffers success, I don't applaud this imperialist move. I've already had one comment collapsed and two deleted; I've been here for years and have been on the leaderboard. I contributed and liked the give and take. And in the one article I say what I think -- which happens to be against the corporate mantra obviously, I've been deleted. Coincidence? And don't give me COH @!$%#; I've seen countless comments that should be deleted which were not. A free press doesn't know the meaning of the word censor.
You've also been more belligerent in this one comment thread than in everything else I've seen from you combined which probably has more to do with your deletions than anything else.
If this one action is enough to make you spit on the last two and a half years the staff has spent building this site up, and if this is the kind of discourse you're going to be bringing to the table henceforth, I'm not sad to see you go.
I do hope you'll bring something more well-reasoned to the table and at least try to stick it out for a little bit to see how things shape up but this newfound irrationality seems to be an impediment to that.
If you think any of the crap you've spewed on this thread would have been reprinted in any reputable press in the history of this country I think you'd be incredibly mistaken.
enigma: If you'll notice, most of your comments remain untouched. The only ones that were deleted were filled with profanities and other offensive remarks that fly in the face of the Code of Honor. When there are differences of opinion on Newsvine, one of the rules is that civility should never be compromised. Yes we know it isn't always the case, but it is the responsibility of thread owners to moderate their own discussions. Since this is a staff thread, I'm simply performing said moderation. You don't like that Newsvine is now working with an established media brand. I can respect that. There is no need to lose civility over it though.
Phaedrus72, agree that Newsvine is a success because of contributors, but the format for that was made by the founders and investors: otherwise we'd just all be fish in the sea.
Look, everyone, let's be happy for the founders: their hard work has paid off. If you don't like what has happened, then leave or bear it. If you don't like what is going to happen...well, you don't know that yet. It's all speculation. Newsvine may end up being better or worse, similar or very different. We won't know until it happens.
But come on guys, let's can this "selling out" crap! This is American free enterprise at its best and I for one welcome and embrace it. I was wondering when something like this would happen and am pleased that it has. Newsvine has been successful and has attracted external interest - that is great! And the people behind it have the right to have their hard work rewarded. I may not always agree with their views, but I respect their tireless efforts to give me and all of us this amazing forum from which I and many others have benefited greatly.
Hear, hear, Bozzor, well said, and so apt.
Thanks Ms CYPRAH, but seriously I am so surprised as to the reaction of so many people: the day I signed up, I was wondering when it would be either an IPO or just what has happened. Nothing unexpected here.
Let's just wait and see what Newsvine becomes. I am certainly excited about the prospects.
Bozzor, exactly. In fact of one of the above did NOT happen it would cleraly mean the NV was a dismal failure.
I don't know - it seems that Newsvine is following the Web 2.0 model. Build a site and get bought up. IPO's are so web 1.0 (not to mention very out of fashion thanks to Sarbanes-Oxley).
People predicted darkly evil things on the horizon when Slashdot was bought by OSDN. Not much changed. Plastic.com was never bought as far as I know. kuro5hin.org was never bought as far as I know. They chug along at the same size. Fark became its own company, and there was a little scandal about selling listings on the site, but nothing much has changed. I can't really think of any of the big community sites that changed a lot when they were bought or went into business. It's not inevitable, but neither does it seem particularly significant.
Congrats newsvine. I hope bigger will be better.
lots of money-I like the sound of that.
I hereby nominate myself for BIGGEST CLASS WHORE OF THE DAY
Oh man. Well you'll probably be needing an assistant for your class whoring won't you? Maybe I could head up the class whore liason office or something. As long as I get a desk, and a secretary, I'm cool.
When Microsoft is involved with anything, money becomes the most important factor.
Hotmail.com use to be completly free, now there are special subscribtions additives that use to be free to the now limited free service. I suspect that this is going to be the way on Newsvine.
that would be bad. Well this should be interesting at least.
All of this paranoid bickering. I for one welcome our new overlords and would like to remind them that my Xbox 360 is still in the shop for the Red Ring error. Anytime you want to get that back to me, guys? Soon? Just saying.
(Seriously, some people are calling foul a bit early -- traditionally, you wait until after a faceless multinational corporation has done something wrong to tar and feather them. Sheesh, give them a chance.)
Gee... and multinational corporations have such a great track record, it seems a shame to not to give them the benefit of the doubt right? Bottom line fella. That's all people care about nowadays.
Enigma, I don't know if you're on a bad trip or something but grow the @!$%# up. Yes, MSM is evil and 30 second attention span and manufactured consent and all of that. Seems to me that if they want to pay newsvine, a site which subverts the standard model, to continue doing what it does best, then we have maybe even a reason to celebrate.
If that sounds premature, ok, I can dig it. Cautious optimism is how I'm taking it.
But you're really kinda just being a dick, it's like you and phaedrus are here channeling DreamWeaver72 and I'm not really enjoying it...
Are you denying acting in a manner that a reasonable person could characterize fairly as "being a dick?"
That's not all you're doing. Would you admit that a reasonable person who has been following your contributions to this discussion might say you were acting like a dick?
I'll deny it. Personally I think he is behaving in what a reasonable person would call a temper tantrum. He just found out his favorite toy has to be shared with little Susie and is going to scream and hollar about it.
The appropriate response at this point would be to ignore and not respond at all to him. I wish at this point I so high minded but I admit and not a deriving a perverse amusement value out of him.
I don't need to explain it away. It's not my column, and I'm not moderating. But if I were moderating this column, I probably wouldn't have deleted Mykola's comment either. Frankly, I think it's relatively restrained considering the number of comments you've added to this discussion, none of which that I can see have added one iota of value. Phaedrus shares a lot of our concerns, as did tschrek, and yet neither of them had to resort to your worthless rhetoric to get their points across. Notice also that neither has deleted comments in this thread. Some might call this empirical evidence that your hypothesis is bull@!$%#.
@Myk,
Phaedrus72 was DreamWeaver72. I think he changed it back when we were able to just randomly change our domain names and screen names.
Just because it's a free press setup,
Doesn't mean you get to scream and whine about how it's all or nothing.
There are certain responsibilities that go with using a service like this.
Please abide by them.
...I would call you a "cockmaster" but that would be a violation of the CoH so I won't.
-Dave
Hey Myk, who are you channeling, seeing as your comment got collapsed as well? Having said that, I'm REALLY surprised that none of my comments got deleted or collapsed. Maybe... just maybe that shows that the newsvine staff IS fair and impartial after all. I have made some pretty disparaging remarks here about the purchase by MSNBC, but guess what Myk? That's my right on a discussion forum to have a different viewpoint than you. You and I hardly ever agree, you being a socialist and all. But I never resorted to name calling or foul language. You did and that makes you no better than Engima or I. Apparently the staff think so too. If you didn't think that this move by Newsvine was going to be controversial then you are naive indeed. If you want total agreement on the issues of the day, then I ask, pray tell, what you are doing on a site like newsvine to begin with?
For my part, I"m very impressed that my disparaging remarks were not deleted or collapsed. Maybe I was wrong about the whole thing. I'm still listening and I can still be persuaded.
Phaedrus, as long as you're civil, your opinions are always welcome. BTW, NV Staff do not collapse comments, only the community is able to do that.
I am very concerned
msnbccom-why-did-you-buy-newsvine-make-a-profit-of-course
I don't wish to subscribe!
Then by all means, don't.
Hetep and Respect Good Spirits, Congrats! And I thought you folks were on vacation, LOL
I new it, the New York Times of Cyberspace (With independent voices). We are on the move, more resources when we need it to grow and 29 mil in new eye balls. Hmm Christmas is coming early. Tnx
DamianKD, please wash your mouth out with soap before going to bed.
Good job everyone! One of my concerns when I first looked at Newsvine was....are these guys making enough to be able to sustain rapid change & growth? Huh! You were on top of it all along. Really proud of the team.
Congratulation to Newsvine and all the great citizen journalists that make it a great site. They are the true talent and I look forward to seeing the impact my friends are going to make on news across the web with a bigger audience. Of course I have my fingers crossed and hope no one (msnbc stuffed suits) tries to stop all the love fest/blood feuds that go on around hear. This is going to be fun :)
I think Calvin and MSNBC needs to start thinking about the PR aspect for current NV people..Like T-Shirts ? MS has always been famous on T-Shirts for events....A nice Newsvine T-Shirt or a Newsvine Combined with MSNBC maybe ? Hint Calvin...XL will work just fine....
I see another batch of Newsvine Ts in our future.....
Put them on organic cotton, please?
Shoot, I was hoping they could put them on baby seal hide.
Also, could they say:
"Newsvine was bought by MSNBC and all I got was this lousy t-shirt."
That's genius, on baby seal hide, it would say it all. ;-)
Well thank you Calvin ! I always like things in writing :-) Actually.....I was serious on the T-Shirt deal. MS has always been a big fan of T-Shirts. I would even pay for one ! I mean its probably the closest thing to a press pass......And for me, I think this whole time is pretty exciting.
That totally made me laugh my ass off. Can I have one, too, please? And can it be black, this time? Black, organic, baby seal hide. Everyone's needs met?
Yes, black!
And maybe I can get Dennis to paint wings on the back of mine. hehehehe
I want the British Racing Green version with the msnbc tread pattern across it.
With "Information Superhighway roadkill on the back"
Well I am glad nobody asked for a T-Shirt with the fatal BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) on it !
