Announcing the Newsvine Cinderella Bracket Challenge

Just in time for this year's NCAA Tournament, Newsvine is proud to bring you "The Newsvine Cinderella Bracket Challenge" fantasy game. This year's prize? A brand new XBOX 360 for all of your first-person-shoot-em-up needs.

As in years past, our game works a bit differently than the thousands of other NCAA bracket games out there in that you actually get more credit for picking the teams that overachieve in the tournament. This ensures a more interesting tournament for you and all of the friends you invite into your group pool.

So here's the drill: You can create up to three entries. You can either join existing groups on Newsvine or create your own group to invite your friends into. For each entry, you'll get 300 "credits" which you can spend purchasing teams in the tournament. The best teams are more expensive and the longshots ("Cinderellas") are cheaper. Pick the combination of teams which nets the most wins during the tournament and you win. One point per tournament victory... all rounds are weighted equally.

So head on over and fill out a bracket or three today. And remember to invite your friends in. When one of them wins the XBOX, they'll owe you.

Now that's what I'm talking about...

Also, if the Newsvine Blog doesn't mind some linkage, anyone interested in joining a fantasy baseball league with your fellow newsvine users should head over here.

I don't much get what this is all about. Guess I'm not privy to whatever the NCAA Tournament is. Is it something that is very region-specific? If so, I guess doesn't apply to all of Newsvine. But then, a game about Newsvine Groups and Viners seems very meta to me. Maybe just Meta?

I get easily confused amidst confusion:-)

Guess I'm not privy to whatever the NCAA Tournament is.

It's the tournament to determine the national champion in men's college basketball in the US. (There is also a tournament for women's, but this pool is for the men's tournament.)

Yeah, the joke would be funnier if this were actually Meta, and not, you know, about a college basketball tournament that has absolutely nothing to do with Newsvine, and which much of the country (let alone those of us on Newsvine) will be watching obsessively.

"Sponsored by Newsvine" is not the same thing as "about Newsvine".

Hell, a contest about sports may be the least Meta subject possible, when it comes to Newsvine.

Though, it's also true that Newsvine's iteration of the NCAA Tournament Pick'em is a Role Playing Game in disguise:

"Sponsored by Newsvine" is not the same thing as "about Newsvine".

Under that logic, drinking contests, vinemeets, and the 8things meme wouldn't be meta.

Under that logic, drinking contests, vinemeets, and the 8things meme wouldn't be meta.

Not to derail the thread, as the best thing about this tournament is that it gives me a chance to step away from the BS that's been permeating for the last couple months:

Really? "Vinemeets" aren't Meta? A meeting of Newsvine members to (ostensibly) talk about their experiences on Newsvine?

8things, Meta-ish: It's a way for Newsvine members to introduce themselves through 8 silly facts -- as a member of the Newsvine community -- to other members of Newsvine. I'll concur that this is more stupid, than Meta, though. (And less useful, to boot.)

Drinking Contests: It's basically a party for members of Newsvine. Feels pretty meta, to me. I'm certain I could invite some people to join Newsvine because of this contest and they'd say: "An NCAA bracket? I'm in!" I'm also certain if I said: "Hey, I'm gonna spend Friday night drinking with some people I know on Newsvine.com, wanna sign up for an account and join in?" I'd get laughed at.

Look, I know people want to poke at Newsvine lately, in some sort of college-freshman sense of rebellion, but a tournament bracket surrounding one of the biggest sporting events in the United States (which is hosted by almost every single sporting outlet in the country) is not Meta.

Can't we just step outside the lame discussions for a chance and have some fun?

Still seems like something that no one outside of newsvine will care about. Henry won the cinderella newsvine challenge is only relevant to those who know who henry is.

This isn't about whatever sport the tournaments are, it's about people at newsvine, that sounds meta to me. Personally I don't care one way or the other.

Wow. Are we going to have to create a new rule that you can't discuss the metaness of any Newsvine Blog content now? Lighten up a little on this March Madness Monday. This blog is here to announce items of interest to the Newsvine community. It doesn't publish often. It doesn't publish frivolously. If you're interested in the the biggest sporting event in the United States short of the Super Bowl, then feel free to play the game. If you're not, please feel free to do whatever else you'd be doing today.

I won't know what the heck I'm doing, but I'll jump in anyhow. I got 3rd place in a bracket challenge in 7th grade by having the highest ranking in each match up win, until I got to the championship game. Sadly, though, this is different, so I'll just make some guesses. Times 3.

Whatever, so you get a couple of extra ponts. It's all about the chalk, baby. National champion is 6 points. Cinderallas are good for one or two, best used sparingly. The answer, unfortunately, is yes. And let it be known right now, that as of this moment, a mere two basketball days away from the end of the tournament, I am the smartest basketball fan on all of Newsvine. Yes, that's right. I am the reason why they even *have* rules like "employees not eligible to win". I rule. And if Davidson College had beaten Kansas, I'd be in even better shape. Take it from me, Davidson knows Davidson.

This is just turning out to be a pretty good basketball year for me as I've already locked up a snake pool championship as well... even before the Final Four has started.

Again, see previous statement regarding the extent to which I rule.
