Tonight at 10PM PDT, Newsvine will be offline for about 20 minutes, followed by a few hours of "read-only" activity while we move our site to a new facility.
DNS should slowly propagate over the next few hours, and should be fully resolved by around 3AM. The old site will redirect to the new site for a week or so until everyone has the new DNS entries. You might notice some slight flakiness with the conversation tracker and/or watchlists for the first few hours of site activity.
The new facility provides us room to grow and integration with a top notch 24x7 monitoring team. It's also going to free up some of the Newsvine Team to focus more on the product and less on site monitoring and operations.
We thank everyone for their patience.
Whoa ! So when do we find out what new goodies you have installed ? Are you going to have downloadable movies or anything cool available for us ?
top notch 24x7 monitoring team
Emily is going to be pulling in some overtime ! Poor thing :-)
Good luck !
Great news! Hope you'll all be pulling some overtime celebrating!
I was looking at the picture. Is that how you're going to move it? That's going to take longer than 5 hours.
Tedd-What kind of movies are you looking for? (As if I didn't know.)
I was looking at the picture. Is that how you're going to move it?
"Don't put the horse before the carriage"
This is so MSN Can monitor us better I KNEW IT!!!!
Class, fascist...ahhh nevermind.
Monitoring the health of the servers and network load balancing is always a good idea. MSN is not going to be looking at any conversations, they are concerned about network response time and delays and outages. A totally different thing.
babin,
I don't think there's a conspiracy involved. And if they are monitoring, after seeing some of the comments, I welcome them. Some people get down right ugly & nasty.
I'll tell you what, if they come for you, let me know & I'll bail you out. How's that? Then I'll take you over to the article, "How to be a better kisser" and teach you a lesson........Ha!

;-)
So is this new facility the MSNBC facility? Will it be faster?
It will be in the MSNBC building right next the XBOX Group :-)
Faster isn't what I'm looking forward to. 24/7 monitoring from MSNBC.com sysadmins is what I'm looking forward to. (Although faster is always nice, too.)
I'm a little wary of that, but we'll keep an eye on 'em and keep 'em in line, so it stays a good thing.
I'm wondering if the move will include more bandwidth. Could embedded audio and video in our posts be around the corner? Hm….
I could go for MSNBC in HD since I cannot get it from my cable company :-)
I'd go for the HD provided they make Contessa Brewer and Chris Jansing do the news nekkid as they day they were born.
Could embedded audio and video
Um, we already have embedded audio...
What I don't get is why we have Bold, Italic, Quote, and Link buttons for our comments, but nothing of the sort for article-editing. I'm not talking a full-on toolbar for blogging, just a few buttons like what the comment field has. It's rather annoying to have to type out the href anchors every time I want a link in my article when I can just highlight and click in a comment.

I've wondered the same thing. No reason we shouldn't have the same editing tools available for articles that we have for comments...
Um, we already have embedded audio...
We have embedded audio if the user directly contacts Newsvine and makes a special request to embed audio. (I have a feeling there's no technical limitation on embedding video either, just that no one has asked for it or Newsvine prefers video remain restricted to the Nightly News Club for now). Unless I'm missing something, we don't have the ability to embed audio in the article while authoring. It would be nice to make it just another tool, like for images.

I'll bet Mark would be happy to be able to stop me from spamming every Wednesday morning about the Vinecast audio hehe...

I've asked ;-)
no technical limitation on embedding video
However there might be a bandwidth issue, especially if Adam starts posting some of those cheerleaders on his site..
Hey! Why does Adam get cheerleaders? (crosses arms indignantly)
My guess is because Adam has more money then you :-)
That wouldn't be hard... I'm broke and have been broke for awhile.

So is this new facility the MSNBC facility? Will it be faster?
now THAT is ballsy - calling out the blog!
very impressive.
Looks faster to me. Hate to say this, but the MSNBC assets (not the kooks who comment),
might be some good, specially if they can (ahem) bequeath the Vine with bandwidth...
Agreed.
MSNBC has no lack of bandwidth or speed. My traceroute times have cut in half. So far, so good.
Nice :-)
You might notice some slight flakiness with the conversation tracker and/or watchlists for the first few hours of site activity.
...and this would be different than normal how?
No kidding. I've stopped hoping the conversation tracker will ever work correctly.
gecko
I'm glad you brought that up. Sometimes I'll think, "What the................?"
Well, the conversation tracker is the same...it still doesn't work.
I've noticed that since 7am.
I think they could have ended that sentence at the word "conversation", but then that's par for the course on the 'vine. ;)
It's also going to free up some of the Newsvine Team to focus more on the product
Oh crap. We're a product.
I look much better in plastic wrap.
Removes the wrinkles...
Dennis,
You're more like...a commodity. Otherwise you'd have an official spokesmodel chick.
Oh crap. We're a product.
Speak for yourself, I'm a by-product at best!
I'm a by-product at best!
But are you copy protected ?
pfft, do you know me AT ALL? I'm protected by the Creative Commons non-commercial, attribution license 3.0!
That didn't change when MSNBC announced this morning they bought out that tvgawker site and licensed all their products and people for Windows Media© use to boast sales for the Zune ? :-)
If that were true I'd be singing the song of a person who just got paid....as it stands that is not the case, sadly :P
Soilent-Newsvine is made from people...PEOPLE!
Funny........And good movie.
Do you remember the price for a tomato?
$3.00.......We're almost there.
Woo hoo, but how am I going to survive for that 20 mins? Oh my I'm already going into withdrawals!!!
Hey thanks for giving us some advance notice on this.
Good luck on the big move, guys!
May your bugs be small and crunchable
Awesome, that's overnight local time. Good job. :)
I hope the picture isn't indicative of anything. (horse and buggy)
*tapping fingers on the desk...*
The metamorphosis has begun on this coast. The conversation tracker on this thread is starting to burp/bork.
Thats because your on the wrong coast. Mine still works just fine...or maybe its because you LIKE cabbage ☺
This is coastal bigotry Riggs. No more lattes for you.
Enjoy your "cuppa joe" you elitist scum ☺
Scum? You mean the stuff at the bottom of the cup?
That gooey stuff from the donut you dribble in the coffee....
I'm the crema, baby. What's wrong with a good doughut?
OK. Doughnut/s.
Nothing wrong with a good doughnut, its those calories that get stuck on the side of them.
Calories? I would like you to know about the 10 lbs...uh no.
10 lbs ? You want to see the 100 lbs I just lost ? :-)
:0. okay.
Good help you've been getting. Keep it up. Do wonders for your BP.
My BP is always 110/60, sadly that photo has Photoshopped by Dave...I have a long ways to go..
Now boys.........Be nice!............And magz, break that doughnut in half and share it with your brother.......Need anything to wash it down with Teddy?
How about some Kahlua added to my latte' ?
You got it. Have some in the liquor cabinet as we speak....I mean type.
Hey.......How come people don't vote on the comments or articles? I'm getting to the point that I have become a one woman crusader. From now on, when I go into an article & if I leave a comment, I'm checking everybody.
Good idea or bad?............Speak to me Guru........after you get this within the hour.....actually 63 minutes.
Good luck! with the move.
Wooooohoooooo! Yummy goodies are on the way! I can smell 'em. ;)
I just hope this move is gonna clean the place up a little more. Going through some of this @!$%# is starting to get tiresome, not that I've never dropped a turd here and there, but I'm not yet retired from the day job. Eh, c'est la vie folks.
Few hiccups, but overall it seemed to go well
I'm glad to see everything seems to be the same from where I sit so far. Congratulations!
Few hiccups, but overall it seemed to go well
josh,
I would say that is being pretty modest for rolling a entire network over to a new data center, that went smoother then many I have seen and worked on, at least for the users and. Life got a bit slow around 10:05 pm PST as all 18 hops looked the same as this one did from Redmond:
#18 adm.newsvine.com (207.7.229.84) 406.602 ms 456.928 ms 437.805 ms
However the next one I could capture at 10:46 pm PST sure looked nice !
#18 adm.newsvine.com (207.7.229.84) 67.294 ms 67.072 ms 66.260 ms
So, job well done, everything else looks good so far ! Thanks for the great job.
I agree - great job. In a migration of this sort the devil is in the detail, its often the "small" things that trip you up. In this case, at least from a user perspective, it went well.
If there are in fact exhausted bodies with scrambled eggs for brains after the worst nightmare they have had in their illustrious careers scattered around the system .... take heart from the fact that all the running around worked ....
Either way which way, great job from all concerned.
An even higher praise to you guys if there are scramble-brains out there from it. No one seems to have noticed any issues you might have been fixing.
Few hiccups, but overall it seemed to go well
There is an upper [theoretical] limit to how well it could have gone, given that there were no blueberry malts to be found/had.
Please ! Please ! dont thow out the Quill's & typewriters !
NVblog:
Wow. This is the very first time in all my livelong day that a company has said "We have downtime ahead after which service will be improved" and it turned out to be TRUE rather than a pipedream!!!
(knock wood)
can you get rid of that annoying thing that refreshes the entire homepage when I'm going thru my tracker while your at it? I thought AJAX eliminated the need for such silly old fashioned refresh systems.
Hang in there folks. Site appears to be performing well, but I've noticed some oddities with photo uploads. If you notice your url with a "new" in it, periodically remove it an see if it "sticks". During the DNS transition, we'll put that in there for you to keep you on the new site. Eventually it should "never' show up.
As usual, a few glitches, but overall we're very pleased with the move.
I'm impressed with the speed increase, but still having problems with my Watchlist clearing. All in all though, I think you guys did a great job with this transition.
As usual, a few glitches, but overall we're very pleased with the move.
Yep - was impressive - Kudos to the Team.
I honestly thougth the title was: Newsvine Outrage Tonight.
Glad there's no outrage.
patriciaad, No outrage. I got KLM's remarks of just in time........Ha! If there should have been any, it would have been from a suppressed woman or man with a real problem.
oh,and don't forget to vote. (that's my new ending to comments on a seed or article.)
mark,
I have noticed one other thing that is a little odd. I seeded an article this morning, but it does not show up under my column, so the only way I can return to it is if someone goes there and I follow them via the tracker. I sent a bug report in. Other then that, its looking great !
Tedd,
I seeded one at 10:25am edt & it hasn't shown up either. I can pull it up under my history but its not listed in my column.
Also I'm made a few comments & it'll probably happen to this one but the "Need to fix anything?" count down clock has stuck on all of them.
Comment 19.4 is showing I have 30:15 minutes to edit.
I don't know how to send a bug report in to Mark so, could you do me a favor & either teach me, Oh Guru or catch that bug & send it along with yours. Much obliged.
Oh, I'm not hitting "Check Spelling". So deal with my errors. I don't want to self-destruct.
Oh, I'm not hitting "Check Spelling". So deal with my errors. I don't want to self-destruct.
Aha! I knew there was something sinister about that spell checker...
dkaz,
For right now, just copy and paste this and it will show you everything (on your column....)
http://dkaz.newsvine.com/?more=SectionContent
"How to be a better kisser" whoa...figured you were the expert at that one :-)
Yah patriciaad, watch out for that thing.
And Tedd, if you see this within the next 1/2 hour to an hour.......I found the "bug zapper" and reported the problem.................Duh!
I just want my "How to Kiss" article showing up. That's really important to me......Ha!
More so than the Middle East problems.
Maybe if you checked your column some day instead of worrying about zapping bugs as I reported it a few hours ago :-)
I tend not to miss too much around this place...
Tedd,
Now you should be saving that comment for my article.
Come on.........help a sister along........Ha!
By the way, I am.........but the author of the article seems to think the women have the problem. Thats what I'm waiting to see.
Mark
Minor Glitch for you. I posted a comment on :
"After 60 years, senior black officers rare in US Military"
News Type: Event — Seeded on Wed Jul 23, 2008 11:53 AM BST
#54 Its still showing (at time of this post) a countdown for editing, clock shows over 40mins left, which unless its now changed as a result of the update, would appear to be wrong. I've refreshed etc a couple of times, still the same.
(This one had the normal edit time attached)
Tedd......Comment # 19.10
I just checked my column. It's not appearing in my latest seeds. I posted it this morning. I also noticed a lot of my comments aren't there neither.
But that's okay.......the bugs have to be worked out of anything that's new. I'm taking off for awhile anyway. Thanks for reporting it.
Catch you later.
dkaz,
It shows up fine if I click on that link I give you on 19.10, its the first thing that shows up.
But no, it does not show up in "Latest Seeds" but will show up in "July Seed" They will get it fixed.
I've got the same problem with my new satirical article.
Hey guys, figured out the problem. Should fix itself in the next few minutes.
Awesome, thanks mark.
Working perfecting now. Smashed that bug !
Working perfecting now. Smashed that bug !
You killer! next time let the bug go free outside of the building.
what? not that kind of joke? Nevermind!
(note: for anyone under 30 that was an old SNL joke)
Tedd,
I'm back in biz!
Thanks again for your help & to Mark............Job Done!
Great job, boys!
Seems faster, yup. Conversation tracker still quirky, but nothing bad sticking.
Holy crap is the site fast!
UPGRADES!
I wish I could tell, but something's @!$%#ed up with my local internet so everything is taking a damn minute to load. :(
Sorry, Adam. That's outside our scope, otherwise I'd hop on a bus and fix it :P
I wish I could tell, but something's @!$%#ed up with my local internet so everything is taking a damn minute to load. :(
run a traceroute ... it'll show the latency & and the number of hops between you & us.
hey josh
Wed Jul 23, 2008 1:10 PM PDT
can you get your clock set correctly...your getting me all confused..
Tom, I am not able to get a traceroute to finish, it goes thru nine local hop's fast and stops here
ten3-4.cpk-76c-1b.ntwk.msn.net (207.46.34.118) 24.319 ms 24.809 ms 24.381 ms
same for pinging the site
--- www.newsvine.com ping statistics ---
10 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss
Mine stopped at the same thing as Tedd's
21 ten3-4.cpk-76c-1a.ntwk.msn.net (207.46.34.38) 97.779 ms 96.287 ms 95.024 ms
I did just have a power outage and I hear thunder off in the distance, so I guess that could be contributing to my crappy internet connection.
Also, it looks like the time is fixed now. For a while it was allowing me to edit comments for an hour after posting, I guess that feature went by the server clock as opposed to a client one...
Big data centers tend to block icmp traffic as a matter of course. Probably nothing neferious, just more secure.
Last night after they cut over, I was able to ping all the way thru, they traceroute surprised me as I can get a traceroute direct to MSNBC servers or Microsoft, but not Newsvine.
hi Adam & Tedd:
it won't go all the way, but it'll get you pretty close (probably to the outer edge of the network that hosts our new NOC).
so Adam, what you're looking for is a hop with a high latency along the way - usually represented by an "*", for when traceroute is unable to get to the next hop. so if the problem is with your local ISP, you'll see traceroute hang somewhere soon after it leaves your gateway.
Big data centers tend to block icmp traffic as a matter of course. Probably nothing neferious, just more secure.
voila.
isn't there some rule about posting in a foreign language? I don't understand a thing you guys are saying.
heck its easy Viki
N.O.C.: Nonconformist Offering Caresses
I.C.M.P.: Ideal Cutie Made for Pleasure
In English, now that Newsvine is a Real Network, it has security features built in and we cannot play like we once were able to, also Adam's Network provider has a problem......so its all because of Bush...
still doesn't compute, but thanks for trying. ;)
ok chicago style then.
1> Calvin trashed his old ratty PC, bought a shiny new imac and its now kept in a nice safe place.
2> Adam's ISP sux's
Better now ? :-)
Newsvine Line is broken. It has been stuck on the same story for quite a while now. I've tried three different browsers.
Same with Search by Users and all my friends are showing off-line :-(
I was told it was Obama's fault...
Now dont break a tradition - it was Bush's :)
Ha. Bold prediction: We'll be jokingly blaming stuff on Bush well into the next decade.
Well deep down we all know for a fact, it was Bush that caused it, just for discussion we could blame Obama..
Well at least Newsvine Live is working again. Thanks, guys.
I thought it was Al Gore's fault. After all, he invented it, didn't he?
NOOOOOOOO!!!!
Haha - awesome that you're moving the site to a new facility. Can't wait for new features to come a-rolling out...
(Growing, eh? Well, if you're ever looking to hire in Colorado...)
Can we expect an announcement shortly regarding whatever good big news is coming? I told people the reason newsvine staff didn't attend austin vinemeet was because they were too busy with making new toys.
Oh, I think there are a LOT of big announcements coming. Right, Calvin??????
You know Calvin, I happen to have it on good authority that I could get you onto a wide spread podcast if you feel the need to an announce anything fun to the community ;)
It'll be like when they announce the emmy and oscar nom's
On an unrelated note, calvin did you really promise an RAV to any woman who gets pregnant due to actions taken at a vinemeet?
Hah!
phew! Thank goodness I've already got one. I don't need to be birthin' any babies at this point.
you mean Ninja Girl is expecting ? Holy Cow ! No wonder she is so quiet....whoa....
Have no idea who ninja girl is but no none of the women who attended vinemeet are pregnant though maybe this explains why some didn't show (fear or being knocked up)
I, too, am excited about any potential announcements that may be coming up... babies or otherwise.
@Scott - yikes.
It could be worse..or better, depening on your point of view I guess ;)
You're in Easy Mode. If you prefer, you can use XHTML Mode instead. |
