About an hour ago, we quietly launched the ability to connect your Newsvine account to your Facebook account via Facebook Connect. This is phase one in an ongoing project to allow various other social sites you may enjoy to integrate better with your activities on Newsvine.
On every sidebar except the front page sidebar (for now), you'll see a light blue box prompting you to connect your accounts if you happen to already be logged into Facebook. If you aren't logged into Facebook, or if you've already connected your accounts, you won't see the box.
Upon clicking the box, your Newsvine and Facebook accounts will become aware of each other and every time you vote on a story, this action will show up automatically in your Facebook news feed. We've only wired up votes for now but are curious as to what other sorts of functionality you'd like to see. Writing articles and seeding links will definitely come next and possibly comments after that, but with comments we're a little wary of people flooding their Facebook news feeds. Some of you leave over 100 comments a day on Newsvine (you know who you are!).
Aside from posting items to your Facebook news feed, are there any other bits of functionality you wish you had around here, leveraging your already established presence and relationships on Facebook? If so, leave your requests in the comments below.
Also, we've given Tyler the keys to the Newsvine Twitter feed. If you can't get enough of his knowledge nuggets on Newsvine, try the bite sized morsels now available on Twitter.

Money. I have to start using Facebook again.

I resent this. They're rarer than the should be, but I hope that they're meals. In return, I will Twitter about the deepest fears of Newsvine Blog. I will find the weak spot in your cyborg heart.
Sweet, sounds like maybe you guys are spending some time fleshing out that API...? =)
Do not trifle with the Newsvine Blog, Tyler. The last person to do this was Intern Rob, and you can see the permanent brain damage he incurred as a result.

You have no idea how much System Shock 2 I played in high school, do you?
If only you could untag yourself on Flickr like you can on Facebook...
Would it be asking too much for a NV staffer to please upload images of the blue left rail FB button and the pop-up "connect" screen for those still having difficulty? Thanks!
Are you logged in to Facebook right now?
I'm going to have to try this. If I don't like it can I seperate the facebook and newsvine link?
Yeah... how do we turn it off?
Looks great guys!
Man, that was a bad haircut.
I'm impressed and I know what you mean about a comment feed flooding facebook, I'm not sure that would be a good thing.
This is great, I'm going to install now! Woohoo
Thanks guys!
All linked up thanks!
Cool. Almost makes me want to re-open a Facebook account.....almost. I'll stick to harassing Tyler on twitter for now I think :P

My name is Newsvine. *crosses arms, pouts*
Oh, I see how it's gonna be. You're like the borg now or something. Shiny new toy and suddenly it's all "My name is Newsvine! I am no longer a person, I am the imbodiment of the collective consciousness Newsvine as a whole" Well sir, to that I say....uh.....actually, that's pretty cool :P
Twist my arm, why don't you?
Owww!!! Okay, okay, I'm linking already! Geez...
Now, when will Multiply.com members have this option also?
Coolness! Thanks guys. :)
It's nice to have this ability. I confess I rarely use my Facebook account, though. Maybe the news is too much of my social activity!
I do hope there are no significant bugs due to the newness of the procedure.
Yeah, I like Newsvine too.
Geeez, Now I gotta find out what that is all about. I am just barely, almost getting the hang of this.

Uh, I'm definately on my Facebook account now, and yet I don't see anything on the sidebar. Am I missing something? Is there a direct link to access it?
I don't even see a "blue thingy." :|
I saw that, but there's no link for it.
Accounts linked. I definitely want my articles to show up on my facebook page - don't care about seeds quite as much.
Is there some way that you guys can hook it up so that we can select what we want to appear on facebook, maybe by using an RSS feed or something? That way we can control what content is displayed.
OMG!!! My alters will meet.
its not working correctly for me. i can see the light blue box and i'm signed onto FAcebook, but the box doesn't seem to have live links. nothing happens when i click on it, the cursor arrow doesnt change to an arrow. don't know what the problem is. i look forward to seeing it in action. i joined the Unofficial Newsvine Group on Facebook too.
I'm having the same problem, nothing happens when I click the light blue box. I tried allowing pop ups and that didn't work. I just gave up.
Ditto. I'm signed into facebook, but I don't see anywhere on the blue box inviting me to link accounts.
same here. I'm not even sure if I'm seeing the rigt blue box?
edit: alright I got it.
The facebook link button is on the left side of page when your on Newsvine. Example in "Top News". I haven't seen any option while in Facebook for it or Newsvine. Nor am I clear on how to terminate the link if I decide I don't like it.
Some people can see it, and some people can't. I'm in the latter category. I may have to send off a bug report, because I am definitely logged in to facebook.
Just connected..cool.
Solution-can you make a button to press that would then connect the comment to your facebook if you check the box? Just a thought.
Looks pretty sweet. I should point out that the way this article is written it seems to suggest (at least at first) that the button is on your Facebook sidebar. That kind of threw me.
Otherwise, very cool idea. I'm sure you'll eventually want this configurable as different users will want different levels of functionality. I, for example, would really much prefer just my articles to show up as otherwise I'll shortly have no friends on Facebook due to the volume of votes!
Nice work though. Now I really need to write that social media article I've been thinking about!
This is great and I checked it out on Friday. I don't Tweet much since this forum is about the only one I've managed to grasp, but I can't figure out how I get to be one of the folks listed as a friend of Newsvine on the Twitter. Can someone please clue me in, Jim Dent, Aine, anyone up for that? :~)
I'd like it if there were an option to display each story individually (instead of only one), like how it looks when you click "Show X More Posts." This could be done with a "short" and "full" option in the little edit tab. Just a thought.
well.. i wish it worked. :/ i've tried it in firefox and chrome. blargh. and no, i will not try it in ie. :P
I don't see a button anywhere but what I do notice is an option to have anything I vote on put on my facebook. Is that what this is all about??
If that option dialog comes up when you vote, then your accounts are already linked. Which hopefully means you clicked the connect button at some point. If not. . I'm not sure how they got connected. But whatever works :)
Thanks, josh. I did connect but then couldn't see any evidence of the connection until I voted. Now I know and I like the minimalist approach.
I have not yet tried linking my Facebook and Newsvine accounts, but I noticed in recent days that at the bottom of the categories pages (World news, U. S. News, Science, etc.) on Newsvine, one can no longer click to read an additional 25 articles from further back.
Is this reduction in easy access to recent articles a byproduct of the Facebook linking and is it permanent or temporary? I would appreciate information on this. Thanks!
As a new contributor to newsvine, I really appreciate the option of publishing it to facebook, which I use every day. It seems to me that if we're not willing to post our articles on facebook, we may not want to post them on newsvine either. Thanks for the new feature. It was a great move!
Okay, I like, though I'd like my articles to auto-post to FB when I publish them here. Just because Newsvine doesn't allow self-promotion doesn't mean FB is above such public masturbation.
I have noticed that I only get the dialog box (would you like to post this to FB?) when I vote with the button up top, but not when I click "Post Comment and Vote."
I'm assuming that's part of not publishing every fargone comment made on NV to FB. But folks should know that they should click "comment" and then zip up to the top and hit the Vote button if they'd like the article/seed linked to on their FB page.
Hm, that's just a bug. Will fix shortly.
My articles post to Facebook, Viki. I don't know if the new look allows it (why do they change it every week!?) but I just pasted my Newsvine RSS feed into the Facebook RSS thingy-box, and it worked. If you want more details than that I can probably give them to you, but it's been doable for some time.
Just because Newsvine doesn't allow self-promotion doesn't mean FB is above such public masturbation.
Administrative pretentiousness stifles all the fun.
I think holding off on comments makes sense, at least until you figure out if there is a way to tweak or filter which comments get posted. If I were a heavy commenter, I probably wouldn't want to flood my status; on the other hand I doubt it would be fun if I were asked to confirm whether each commented was shared on Facebook or not!
Perhaps you can develop filters based on criteria like news category or friend groups?
Kick. Ass.
