Newsvine is changing. We're in Beta and nearing the biggest change in the history of the site. We've got a new support section. Now we've got a new blog.
We're starting this blog nearly from scratch because in refreshing the site, we want to renew our commitment to making Newsvine the best news discussion site possible.
One of the most important parts of fulfilling that commitment is improving communication to the people who make Newsvine's success possible:
Newsviners. Our users.
This version of Newsvine Blog doesn't have much content as of this writing - but from the developers to the moderators, we're going to fill it up. There will be features to explain, issues to discuss, and a whole new site to help with.

Cautiously, very very cautiously optimistic. Time will tell if this is progress or placating.
Fair enough. :)
Cynic by nature, but I appreciate the feedback I've seen so far here...so do we get to keep our friends list? *hopeful gremlin blink*
Lance, how do I get to that setting again? control F12?
It's plain old just F12, Dowser, no other keys req.
Mine says that it's in IE9 Compatibility View! Never thunk to look after I skipped over 8 (on advice of IT degreed son, tho you still have to d/l the stoopid thing b/c ea subsequent browser works off the files of the previous version; no wonder my space bar is in the danger zone & I need to burp!) & went to 9. Whyfore? What makes that happen? Izzat b/c this pc came w/ IE7? What happens if I change it to plain old IE9 view? Will I blow @!$%# up? Will I blow NV up? :P
What's the reason for this apparently auto-setting, & if NV techies know it exists, why didn't they plan for it? Ppl should not have to make adjustments to their pc in order to utilize software. It's the other way round. Techies should plan in advance for stuff that may prove incompatible & tweak the software if need be, not us, jeez.
Sorry, dear, but pressing F12 on my computer turns off my wifi... I have to hit either control or function first, otherwise, my computer goes dead in the water... (I have a compaq laptop.)
and I couldn't agree more. My computer is only 2 years old, WHY am I having to make all these adjustments to stay on a site I've been on for 4 years???
This whole thing is pie-in-the-sky dream world for techies. But many many of us are not techies. We have normal sized screens, and we have the ability to use software, not design or make changes to it. I want them to purchase a used computer, about the age of mine, and see how Beta works on it. Because then, maybe they'll fix all this garbage.
That sounds like a perfectly acceptable, reasonable rant to me Dowser! (Let's see if I can add to this) ~~ Now I'm no techie by anyones stretch of the imagination, mine is a Toshiba laptop ~ I just switch it on and it gets on with it with the minimal fuss. I have no desire to fool around with the software, so NV need to get this half-baked beta act together, and had better not be planning on stressing us out with unconscionable BS!
I had a Compaq laptop and it kept over heating and melting a chip off. I would have to take it back, and because it's done by machine, another charge. Like Mighty, I went to Toshiba also, and have had no problems with it, plus I bought a cooling pad for it just in case. I hope things straighten out for you Dowser.
thanks, dear Dare! Me, too! :-)
I've been very happy with mine, as a whole! :-)
Doesn't turn off my wi-fi LOL And F12 does it on the desktop mutt here. I call it that b/c I have an HP Pavilion w/ a Hanns monitor & a Microsoft keyboard & mouse atm. HP makes Compaqs. Weird.
Did you ever figure it out, Dowser?
I 'had' a Toshiba laptop, but it did keep overheating. The next was HP and I've never had a problem with it.
Nope. I sent in a request for help, and never got a reply, either. So pffftt on it. :-)
Is this the beta site?
No, A.Leon.
It's just a blog, but can be seen here and in Beta.
Leon
go here has a picture of what the a group front page look like and you can ask questions
What I meant MJL-3 is ...is this what the posts are going to look like on the new site? No Blue for friends, No tracker for comments that friends are posting on at any given time on articles I haven't read, of the tracker that keeps track of the conversations that I have commented on? Thats what I have been hearing from other members. Those are the features I like the best.
I don't like the idea of the nation thing. I will give it a try but I don't like being caged up.
Leon, a lot of us feel that way, but it's a decision made at the corporate level long before it was ever unveiled to us mere users I'm sure.
Personally, I Shall Rally The Troops in Lobbying for the Retention of a Fine Friend Recognition Background, such as the near Perfect Blue, as We ALL get to enjoy upon a development of such vast and varied relationships, as past versions have had, while this current version does not employ.
PLEASE?????????
Hello????? well,,,, this doesn't look like Kansas Toto,,,,,(rubbing eyes and looking around)
Gussie, your nic is the best little-known reference I've seen here in a long time!
Good luck experimenting with your Newts.
Well,,,,,thanks heaps
I kind of live on the vine for the most part. I was wondering if those of us who have posted original material will have their material archived over or will that material just disappear? Not that I mind either way because I generally don't draw a lot of interest but I am curious about that. Also will we be automatically switched or will we have to re-register on the new system? I have not been following the beta test so I am not real sure about the changes and being kind of old I am not real current on the techie stuff. LOL Like some of the others I am a bit nervous about big changes.
I believe your articles stay with you and your seeds, it will be on your front page...
You will not need to re-register or do anything. All of your content and comments will be automatically accessible in the new system. Your column will reside in the same location at http://shepherd0886.newsvine.com although it will have a different look to it. You will continue receiving notifications of new comments in conversations that you are tracking. If you are in less than 15 groups your status in those groups will remain the same and your groups will automatically be converted to "Nations". The URL address of all groups/Nations will remain the same and only the look of the group/Nation column will change.
Thank you, Lance. Always good to hear from you guys that are putting it all together!!
Thanks Lance
Will the “Nations” still have the same privacy settings as “Groups”?
Hi Dennis-
With "groups" we had three options: Private, Semi-Private, and Public.
With "Nations" we will launch with: Open, Gated, and Invite-only. These are defined as:
Invite-only is not private in that your content and discussion are publicly viewable by anyone but only members of the Nation may participate.
Thanks again
Can you better define this - Invite-only is not private in that your content and discussion are
publicly viewable by anyone but only members of the Nation may participate.
Is it viewable to non-members (Invite-only)?
Sure thing. All content in all Nations is publicly viewable. The different Nation types only define who can publish content and post comments. In an "Invite-only" group non-members can not ask to join and they also can't leave comments in threads as guests. In the other two Nation types, non-members can post comments as "Guests".
So if you want to host discussions to a select group of people you can do this by creating an Invite only Nation. Only members of the Nation will be able to participate in the discussion however anyone will be able to read the discussion.
Lance,
Does this mean we no longer will have a Private Discussion (Group Talk) that is available and only viewable to Invite-only members?
Maybe I am missing how this New Newsvine will work.
But if our current Group Members cannot have private conversation in the New Newsvine we will have to find another place for our discussions.
Also wouldn't opening up our previous "private" conversations as a group be morally wrong, possibly illegal?
Thanks.
So, we should all pare our groups down to 15 or fewer? (I've been doing it gradually.)
What happens if you're in more than 15 groups? Do the first 15 convert, and the rest just drop off or something?
We all were able to pick those we wanted to keep. So, I picked my 15, and then changed my mind and dropped a couple and added a couple, and voila, there I am with my 15 groups!
Nobody has contacted me about losing some groups to get to 15. Is everyone on newsvine invited to the new newsvine?
I've read that some got emails from newsvine about beta. Is that what we all get?
When is this change-over going to occur?
That's probably because you're not on Beta yet. But everyone testing Beta can only do it with 15 groups. I think it should be 20, minimum.
You can't use beta until you are down to 15, a window will pop up and you have to downsize before you can use the beta....
Thanks, MJL. I was wondering how they were going to work that.I have to agree with Ms C that 20 groups (nations) seem better than 15.
Well it is better, but why limit them at all????
That's a question management hasn't addressed. One thing is certain, many of them repeat themselves, so there definitely needs to be culling. But so few groups seem to go from one extreme to the other! :o)
I don't use the tracker & I sure as hell don't want my inbox flooded w/ thousands of *notifications*. There is absolutely no way no how that I could get thru thousands of comments unless I did nothing but squat on NV 24/7. Just b/c I'm friends w/ 100-odd ppl doesn't mean I want to go see the collective 3,842 articles on which they've commented. Just b/c I looked at a seed (& didn't comment, so it should not *track* me) doesn't mean I have any interest in it.
I cruise by category, mostly. When I have time, I will look up what friends are doing, by way of my FL.
There best not be an arbitrary cutoff b/c my own grp is at the end of the alphabet! Half the time I can't even publish to it b/c the end of the list gets truncated around the letter S, & yes, I have sent in a gazillion bug reports to no avail.
And I still think *Nations* sucks rocks & sounds like Fox rolled into a bad game of Risk where eventually someone's going to toss the board & make all the pieces go flying.
Scar, you can go to your friends list, and uncheck the people you don't want to follow, so you won't be getting everything that they do.
BTDT, RD, it won't take :-( I even make sure I untick new friends as soon as I approve. I still get a landslide of tracker crap on the rare occasion I look in it.
O, there's another thing I've sent in bug reports about that apparently won't be addressed....when I get a FR, it's already been auto-accepted! They're in the list w/ their tracking box ticked. Yet they're still up top for me to approve. So I have to delete them out of the list if I don't want to accept, like the damn spammer who sent me a FR a cpl days ago. Oy.
.
you won't have that option in beta...
So my question to Sally and Tyler is
When you eliminate the friends list...are those permently tracked??? Or automatically not tracked..without that not much is going to show up in my tracker exept for all comments...
I also notice on my NV comment left to me aren't moving over to my page...I can't delete or accept...
Could someone in NV Staff delete the pending ones? I sent in a bug report but it came back deleted unread....
When the ques start getting hard....maybe that's not the best word but it's all I got atm..., they stop ans them.
Look how the min someone asked about private grps, Lance went & disengaged. They don't want to deal w/ complaining about stuff that's been eliminated & will never return, so they just ignore the ques. Mike D didn't even moderate his own articles. (No matter how long it is from publication date, seeing as it's *official NV business*, they should keep checking back for new comments/ques IMHO, but it's like they think after 24 hrs they're done & detrack.) They are dispensing info & that's all we get until they determine they should shake out a little more info.
Huh? That's a new one. Never seen that b4.
Was that your sarcastic voice? :-P
Shannoscubie..
I hope it wasn't...
Nope. I've just never heard of a bug report coming back to you stamped *unread*. That's kinda weird.
No, neither have I. I've just had...no response. That was my kinda joke thing. Nevermind. :-D
I'm curious why NV had to change at all? It seems okay to me the way it is.
I'd like to know if we will receive a forewarning before the switch to Beta is made.
I want to be sure I've copied my "final" list of friends (and people on ignore).
Please don't just spring it on us one day!!
VB.. Lance said in one of his comments that they would give advance warning.
Thanks, CL1 - I missed it!
You're welcome, Barb!
Thanks for the update, Tyler and Lance.
Does anyone but me have problems with Beta in IE9?
This afternoon, not one button worked, the header was all messed up, and it was a mess. Then, I shut that down, and went to Firefox, after a few minutes, (5). One or two of the pages I loaded took me to the new comment, but sat there and quivered. I couldn't scroll up or down.
Is anyone else experiencing this?
Ironically enough, I had a very hard time getting here to the blog from Beta. :-)
Dowser
Yep.
Thanks, sweet friend. Sometimes, it is all very isolating.
Just mark me as confused. I will be lost. When it changes and I can't find anyone or don't know where you all are, somebody come by and save me from drowning out there. Tell me which nation site or group site or something or other contains y'all and let me in through the door. Sigh.....
You are very welcome to join my Absolutely No Politics group, Cheryl. All here are welcome!
Do I get an invite to the no politics group once beta hits? I'm in there now and I enjoy seeing what people post and clip there.
Thanks Dowser. I just put in a request
lilgremlin-- if you're in, you're in! If you ask me send an invite to someone, (please include their full screen name), I can send one, or they can request membership!
Cheryl, I'm at work right now, but will make sure to approve your request as quickly as possible! :-)
Whew!!
Ah, thanks Dowser.
They are ruining something that was unique under the guise of "progress". My opinion. BH
A revitalized Newsvine Blog is a good idea.
Reminds me of the siege of Baghdad.
Even the most 'unique' thing won't stay unique forever with the march of time, bore-head007. Otherwise it would be in danger of becoming an outdated fossil. I think we'll lose some much loved features but equally we'll gain new ones that will grow on us.
Indeed, Ben Joseph. Life is about vibrant living, not complacent existing.
Please explain why.
Civilization advances incrementally, with each new generation building on the advances made by the generation that preceded it. You don't just burn down everything, and try to reinvent the wheel from scratch.
You'll notice that Blog has no article archive. With the click of of a mouse, someone has erased a large portion of Newsvine's history. RAV: Ben Josephs is no longer relevant, and soon to be forgotten, in this new Newsvine.
SRO,
If you want the advice, don't complain about something that is temporary when you obviously can still find the content.
My advice to you, if you attach any sentimental value to that article, would be to copy off the contents and save it somewhere, off Newsvine. I knew where to find it, because I favorited it back when it was published. As it stands now, what should be Blog's article archive sits almost empty. I can't guarantee how long my link will be valid.
There is absolutely no reason to believe any of the blog's content will be deleted in the future.
Well, let's hope, for your sake, that your optimism pans out, because my reading of the article above demonstrates to me an "out-with-the-old, in-with-the-new" attitude.
And what's wrong with that? We all get excited when we're close to finishing projects. They've been working on this one for at least six months and that gives them all the more reason to be excited.
This form of blog has a nice feel about it, and many friends are among the commentators so I'm beginning to feel at home ~ Tyler and Sally, first I must commend you ~ thanks for having listened and given us a forum to vent our spleen. My question however, is longstanding:
The powers that be, (perhaps yourselves - I'm not sure) are in the process of the decimation of something very special to effect a change ~ A change that is not only unnecessary it is almost reckless, indeed it is effectively throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Classic ain't broke ~ So Why 'fix it'? A bit of fine tuning here and there perhaps. Personally, I don't particulary have a problem with change but surely ~ NOT a complete overhaul! So, before you effect a complete demolition of the Classic experience you may do well to examine the reasons behind Newsvine's success ~ The ringing endorsement of a whole community. Even the banned and the disgruntled have a hard time leaving it, hence the re-reg's ~ Surely, that tells you something?
Great comment, Mighty Mouth, that sums it up.
This isn't THE beta, your friends won't show as friends....
MJL-3, I recognize my friend's by their names and sometimes even their writing styles ~ despite the fact they all look splendid in blue! ~
All MM has to do to find moi is look for the long-winded posts :P
Well, mostly, b/c this one is amazingly short.
Or follow the sound of the hysterical laughter. ;-)
If the new newsvine is prettier, then that's great. I hope it's easy to read.
This ISN"T it...no it isn't easy to manuver in...
Umm, I am still waiting :)
Read this; Welcome (to Beta) email from Mike D. that was just released by Tyler.
Mike D. = Mike Davidson, Founder of Newsvine. Who btw, just left the Vine to accept a position as VP of Development at twitter.
Read that email, it's very enlightening.
Interesting letter, thanks, that explains the basics behind the limited groups, but not why they are limited to so few!
I don't remember much about this letter, although toward the end, it seemed to be a bit more familiar... I wonder if we got the same thing back in July?
I, too, am disappointed that only 15 slots are available.
People were publishing and clipping to dozens of irrelevant groups. If they only have 15 Nations, it limits how far they can spam.
A good point, Sir Richard.
After going back thru the various posts to this blog, it would seem the only questions that have actually been addressed have been the ones coming from the elite members, it is becoming obvious that we little people are of very little interest to TPTB! You might notice how the questions that I raised in #24 - Tue Dec 11, 2012 5:27 AM CST, have been totally ignored and obviously they do not feel that we the little people should be allowed to share in the revenue generated by the advertising on this site. I really don't care if they allow we little people to share or not, it would however be nice if they at least were honest enough to tell us that they have decided to only offer this fringie benefit to those Power Users (aka elite) members of the site, as a reward for being such wonderful members.... perhaps they should write a letter to we little people here on the site with the title "Welcome To The Mushroom Blog"......
Crazyrooster, management does not appear to have answered any relevant questions at all relating to Adsense, so I don't think it's about 'little people' or big people. They are not dealing with this very well in view of all the anxieties around the switch over. And that is a pity, because it took all the users to make Newsvine a successful site. So don't take it so personally. I am sure they will have to address it at some point and you;ll have the answers you want.
Ms CYPRAH: No disrespect intended, but it is easy to sit back and say be patient when you are not one of the little people who are cut out of the revenue sharing! It seems like the people whom Tyler called "Power Users" are receiving the revenue from Google Adsense and the little "non power users" are cut out of the loop. Try walking about two or even three steps in our shoes for a few moments and then see if you feel like we should just be patient? Now, before you call me a "bitter little man" again, let me assure you, that is not the case, I do however believe that "all" members of the Vine should be treated as equals, and that if TPTB wish to implement a Caste system then they need to do it openly and not hide behind a curtain to do so!
I find this comment very sad, offensive and disappointing, because I never used such words to describe you. If you could find my exact quote with these words, I would owe you an apology. But please don't exaggerate my words to suit your fears, because I do not even know you to describe you in that manner.
So do I. And nothing stops you from complaining directly to the team. But I know of some 'power users', as you call them, who are having difficulties too. So nothing is ever black and white as it seems.
Of curse it is not fair to anyone, but you are not the only one affected by it, hence why I mentioned patience until it's sorted. Early this year, I was not paid by Newsvine for 5 months and I did not feel they were just discriminating against me. I felt something must have gone wrong. I wrote them to point out the non payment, and the fact that I had been rather patient. I got an explanation back and my payments resumed. So I wasn't advising you to do something that I wouldn't do.
crazyrooster1946
I am in there and I am not a " power user ". In fact far, far from it. It isn't a goal of mine to be one either. I do agree it is wrong to just leave people dangling. TPTB should deal with this soon because once beta is the norm thay are going to have their hands full helping people with that judging from what beta testers have said.
Exactly! I am just surprised that they are bot, given the level of anxiety being shown.
I'm one of those people and am not having issue with being patient, though I guess most people would toss me into the "elite" category.
AdSense not working is definitely on Google's end. It was working for a short time, then Google stopped taking sub-domains. The people who acted quickly - while Google was still accepting sub-domains - are the ones who got on. The people that dawdled on setting it up (like me) didn't get on.
Yes it did seem to me that the sooner you jumped on it the luckier you were. But why accept sub-domains and then not? If that is what happened then probably most viners are out in the cold. But if they don't plan to give their banking info then they don't care and don't complain.
You could have a point there, because I did mine that very day, within an hour of getting the notification, and I had no problems at all. It was so easy. I mistakenly thought everyone else would be the same, and did put that ease down to my having Adsense already.
Same here Ms Cyprah. A little voice in my head told me " Do it now, before it changes. "
Strangely, a long delayed confrontation between myself and Google was brought to a mutually satisfactory conclusion because of the change of earnings over to Adsense. It is too complicated to explain here but Google has owed me a few dollars for several years. I have tried to exasperation several times to resolve the matter but got caught in the nooks and crannies and loops of Google's Customer Service. For some reason when I went to put my Newsvine results into Adsense I suddenly became an active Google member.
I can't say what happened here but if you're installing AdSense on your own website, a sub-domain would not be the correct address to give. I'm presuming that we are not Google's typical AdSense customers and a solution needs to be worked out between Newsvine and Google.
Great result, oldfogey. Whey hey! :o)
I was just checking an article about Hillary Clinton fainting.
I noticed that in the comment section there is a "reply" button and an "up vote" button, but no "!" to report COH violations.
Is that a glitch, or will we be losing the report function?
I think there should be a 'down vote' button, like the Mail online has for comments people don't like, rather than collapsing them and robbing people of free speech.
Don't tempt me. I would *red arrow* nasty comments into the ground like it was Agincourt! :P
LOL..scar...me too!!
Must be a clitch it shows it for me...
I think that I can get used to this.
The tracking system puzzles me, though. I see no tracking info for this article or any others on this page. Yet at the bottom of this page there are boxes to click to "start" and "stop" tracking.
I wonder where the tracking info boxes will appear?
And Tyler, it is reassuring to see your face so often. Thanks.
I thought tracking was automatic, Al? Once you go into an article to comment, it appears on your tracker. But you have to undo tracking manually. That's my understanding but maybe this is different.
Ms CYPRAH, in "Classic" there would be a tracking box in the upper left hand corner of this page. I would use that box to move on to the next article I wanted to read. I see no tracking box on this page (Beta).
So when I finish reading this article, I must click my avatar and return to my "Classic" home page to find a tracking box. What is going to happen in Beta, I wonder?
Yes, that's an interesting question, Al.
Al-316
I am in classic, and this page is different to me also. Instead of clicking the avatar, which l see at the top also, l click the newsvine icon on the top left to get back to the NV frontpage for the tracker.
Thanks for the tip, John. It works well. I need all of the help I can get.
Al-316
From what l understand, the NV frontpage refreshes once a minute, so it keeps the tracker more up to date also.
Hey Tyler
I have been following this discussion since day one and and like other Beta discussions there is one thing missing - YOU :o) (he said with a smile)
Now for the important stuff. I have my NV Christmas wish list ready and there are only 2 items on it.
I'm hoping that I won't have to report this comment as a serious CoH violation in order for you to see it and that you have the very best of Holidays :o)
Edit: After posting I notice some interesting formatting in the comment with the list lol
Lebowsky,
Can I volunteer to be a Pall Bearer? I would even be willing to help dig the hole! Too bad TPTB don't actually care about what we think, or even what we desire!
Just a quick note if you don't mind, but I am having a very difficult time reading the comments. I don't know if it's the lettering, or the font, but I have had to enlarge this page numerous times just so I can read the darn thing.
To The Powers That Be: You have successfully all but ripped out the heart and soul of the Newsvine experience, by effectively 'throwing out the baby with the bath water' ~ Its success was in part, the quality of the people amongst its community ~ And with the loss of its core membership the dynamics have shifted ~ Gone are the erudite, the scholars, the enablers; the humorous, the engaging and the downright entertaining. Its dismantlement, all the more devastating for the sheer unwarranted recklessness of it and must surely signal its death knell, the ultimate nail in the coffin of a once unique and satisfying user-friendly concept.
Man, that was great!
Thank you bore-head, just telling it like it is.
Yeah! What Mighty said!!
Me too!
NV sure isn't what it used to be, but I am hopeful, sort of .....
The only people that have actually been supporting the "New and Improved Vine" aka as the "BETA FLOP" are the ones who either wanted and encouraged a new version, or those who stand to gain by the move to a more controlled and structured environment. The concept of Nations, where the Owner and his/her associates are the moderators and controllers of the discussion, which some could call censorship, will do nothing to improve the content of the Vine, and quite honestly can do nothing other than have the effect of stifling actual debate of an issue. We are already seeing one faucet of the new vine, in the lack of moderation here on what could now be compared to the infamous "PIG TROUGH", aka as the classic version. This whole change has been brought about by some unknown (to us little people) reason, probably at the request of the new owners and mgmt. Will it result in the total destruction of the vine, I would say yes it will destroy the vine as we know it, but the vine will continue on but only as a social site where people come to agree on their own special ideas and agendas, but not as a viable site where dissent is not only tolerated, but desired as well. RIP Classic News Vine...... at this time only the owners/mgmt know when the funeral is scheduled for, perhaps they will invite us little people to attend, but I suspect they will not.....
I think Tyler may be a victim here, too. My guess is that his voice carries very little weight with his superiors. His job is to implement this change and act as an intermediary. He cannot and will not say anything negative about this change. His job and career are at stake. He sees what we see and he uses Newsvine, so he knows of what we speak. Just a thought.
Yep.
Hi Al and Dowser, I happen to have a great deal of respect for Tyler and realize the precarious position he must find himself in ~ Afterall, no one bites the hand that feeds them.
LOL However, this shower act no better than the Taliban ~ A nameless, faceless, shameless band of 'terrorist's'! ~ Is that a code of honor violation?
Tyler and Sally--
I understand.
But, everyone up there must also understand that it is most frustrating for your users to be put in limbo for 5 months, as well.
You go, MM! :-D
Oh Scar! ~ Where have you been good bud? ~ You're such a tonic!!!!
Gonna be busy for the next couple of days but will catch up!!!
A blessed Christmastime to you and yours and everyone on the Vine dedicated to Classic!
Hear, hear for me too!!
Merry Christmas everyone!!! :o)
Long story short (hey, I can do that if I want to :P)....spot of tendonitis brought on by evil exterminators & idiotic apt bldg mgmt GRRRRR *Pro-active stance against bedbugs* to ruin Halloween, Thanksgiving, & Xmas. They started mid-Oct & just finished up the *protective treatments* 6 days b4 Xmas! I gave em what-for on the poor timing, couldn't they have decided to repel non-existing cooties back in June or something? So for 2 mos it's been, move this move that shifting about nothing under nothing behind can't block that can't have that there find it a new home Fibber McGee's closets growing Tower of Xmas pressies kind of nonsense, until they kilt my elbow :-(
Thankfully it wasn't in my arse-wiping, mouse-clicking arm :P But it was mighty hard to type just the same. Not to mention drive. Decorate. Wrap. Bake. Cook. Etc. Dipstick mgmt!
Backatcha, MM :-D
I like the Classic bit. This is probably the last Classic NV Xmas! :-O
O! Guess what I got for Xmas, MM?
Excalibur, baby! :-D That bad boy is set up in its rack gleaming at me.
I heart shiny weaponry.
Scar! how ya doing! (Help me mama! ~ you've turned practically nocturnal, indeed ~ vampiric! LOL)
HNY dear friend! ~ So sorry to hear about your tendonitis ~ and worse; bedbugs?! ~ Did I READ you right? Poor darling! I do hope the treatments are kicking in? ~ thought you'd followed the rest of NV and 'jumped ship' to Newstalker's ~ the NV afterlife? Took a sneaky peek the other day ~ left me totally underwhelmed!
I really miss your articles and your witty anecdotes, esp in the British Monarchy group! ~ Excalibur sounds like the perfect gift for a history geek like you! ~ Hope that bad boy came with the legendary 'Lady In The Lake' ~ That dame is obligatory! ~ And that sabre ain't no Excalibur without her!
Anyway, won't derail the blog any longer ~ Much luv! :) Xx
*Pro-active stance* was the mgmt-speak used. Sort of like slapping on sunblock b4 there's any burning.
Wouldn't go there unless I got pd a million a yr to do it! Underwhelmed is a splendid description, MM :-D
Everyone's been slacking b/c every 5 min (or so it seems) beta is imminent for sitewide go, & that started back in July. I think most of us are waiting to see what breaks b4 putting in more stuff that can break!
No, but it did come w/ a bust of King Arthur & the cutest little baby Excalibur in his fist that can be removed & used as a letter opener, so that's fun!
Why so negative about News Talkers? The people there are fantastic and though it may not have the Newsvine format, you certainly don't need to watch your back. If I'm not mistaken, many of the people there now were favorites here.
It could very well be that the Beta Newsvine will be similar to Facebook and/or News Talkers. I haven't a clue, but we won't know until it happens.
TheShrew, glad you made the comment. Since reading it I have applied to become a member of News Talkers. I couldn't believe how many of my Newsvine friends were already there. I can also see a wide open future for the site. Thanks for the tip.
MM was underwhelmed & I'm just not impressed.
Yeah, meh. But, hey. YMMV.
Oldfogey @ #45.6
My pleasure, Oldfogey. Many fine people are there, and if anyone misses Dowser, that's where she is along with many other wonderful people.
From Scar @ #45.7
No problem. I'm there for the Newsvine members I've known for such a long time. I like it that people can use a template for their homepage if they so choose. I am able to go back and forth, here and there, and I adore Perrie and A Mac. very much.
Between Facebook, News Talkers, and Newsvine, and with the exception of a few who turn their noses up at me, l have the best of these three worlds.
Someone wrote: "Tyler's job and C-A-R-E-E-R are at stake....."
Has NOBODY on here EVER read the famous: "The Glorious Gift of Rejection."
(Easily googled)
Happy holidays and LOTS of REAL/EDUCATIONAL reading for all.......
Sad and sorry to say, I wish not so simply "unbelievable."
Speechless.
Is there an ETA for the full move to the "new" Newsvine?
Yes, we were told it would be on line before the elections in Nov! Now bear in mind they did not say what elections or what year......
Well, I hope they give us warning, because I want to be sure I've got a current list of friends copied before the "friends" function goes away.
If they do as good as the communications we have been receiving since the inception of the great Beta project started, then I don't think we will have much communication. It might be a good idea to make that list now, and update it frequently? JMO.... I too, would like to have a little notice so I can tell my friends good bye and all that kind of thing, but we will just have to wait and see what happens....
I've always had all my friends on my Watchtlist, so I just had to print it out..
Good idea. I'll put them on my watchlist. I presume we are going to have one in the new version of Newsvine.
Good idea, Jerry. I have a list, but haven't updated it in a while.
Incorrect. Tyler said he was hoping it would happen before then, but acknowledged he didn't know how realistic that wish of his was. Newsvine has never given a date that I've seen.
Still MIA,,, TPTB...
Yes and before the elections TPTB were so proud of what they thought they had that it would be released shortly.... Let's not forget the Captain jumping ship in there somewhere.
This blog has become just like all the other info articles (2, 3?) created by TPTB ... A quick 1 or 2 liners and then comment after comment of speculation and discussion never to be acknowledged.
Time marches on and so does Newsvine. The absence of TPTB has been encouraging since content has not plummeted, good articles are on the increase and this place has become halfway self moderating. Maybe the paid shills have departed. Anyway, I will continue to enjoy whatever audience and can draw and enjoy my friends in their daily machinations. The Free Press Forever!
Well, something just happened...avatars have shown up where they have never been before!
Some gorgeous dogs, cats and horses on the Vine!
I noticed it, too. It is easy to identify who is posting. I like it.
Me too! Brightens up the column!
The avatars USED to show up all the time-- Avatars=Good Sign, to me!
True, Dowser, and I send a HUUUGE HUUGGG! :o)
Merle @48 - I always knew some ACTED like animals here on NV, but were not nearly as domesticated as dogs, cats or horses. I'm just an empty shell of what I used to be.
Love you very much, dear Ms. Cyprah!
I like the avatars showing up, too. That's a nice change. =0)
Avatars have been working in Classic for some time except on certain NBC sites. But it is always nice to see them!
'Running Scripts' warnings also have been a bane in certain and random article's discussions. And does everyone hope to never again see that 'page change arrow' crap pop out and get hit with the cursor and lose all of your work right at the end of an Immaculate Conception scale run of conciousness?!?!
LOL
Gremlins. They really like chocolate chip and peanut butter 'cookies.' You get zapped when you don't have any.
Yes, very interesting!!
Speaking for yourself, Merleliz? :o)
Dowser, I wonder if you are referring to how they had a list of all the avatars participating in the discussion in a grouping at the top of the discussion section. I always thought that was a nice feature.
This is nice but not what beta actually looks like...I wish they could use this formate in beta...
Yes, CL, I remember that, but before that/right after, they had your avatar at every comment, I thought...
Dowser, Oh could be; maybe I just don't remember that. It's making things run slower for me with it loading in every comment box. Oh well... :)
Me, too, dear friend-- It's nice, but seemingly time consuming on the loading of pages... :-)
CL1
Dowser
I have the same problem with the page loading, and the more pages, the longer the loading.
Nice to see both of you ladies.
Hi John ... Also, I have a new page-loading slowness happening that just started today. In the more recent past, it appeared obvious that they were making changes to each segment of the Vine, one at a time. i.e., there would be slowness and glitchiness on the Accounts page, then it would clear up, then they would move to the group page, then it would clear up, then the Friend List... and so on.
Today, that same type of slowness and glitchiness (freezing up, then all of a sudden kicking in) is happening in every discussion section.
Oh, and unexpectedly, the slow-loading that was present when they first added the avatars to the comment box - isn't happening to me anymore. I'm guessing at something -- when they go into each segment of Newsvine with the 'new' program - it must slow it down for a while, until they let go of some of the old to free up space ?
Nice to see you, too!
CL1
Well, it is still happening for me, but good guess on a possibility. l always look at something like that also. l have lost green and red buttons on articles today, and had the frontpage come up with nothing on it, even after a couple of refreshes And a log off. I usually check other things first, like other sites, my computer etc.
I've had those things happen in the past as well.
Sure wish I was a Genie, right now.
I would take us back to about eleven months ago - fixing all that was wrong (to me:) with classic Newsvine, and there wasn't a whole lot wrong with it (they gave us some great tools to deal with stuff), including some other issues, and then create a new Beta program - just like the one being created - and then I would say, "All of you that are more interested in - segregation, exclusivity, prejudice,
prestige, arroganceoops! ..can start using that program, and those that enjoy classic NV - trolls and all - can stay with this program with no Moderation... Enjoy!!That's if I was a Genie, now if I was a Fairy Godmother, I would...
Well, just in case I can't make any of this work, or don't get into any groups, or whatever...(confession, I don't even know what "BETA" means, LOL)...I'll miss you guys!
IDK, I probably spend too much time on here anyway...
Merleliz.... I will sure hate to lose you. Please consider joining Old Newsvine; I'll 'accept' you if someone else doesn't first.
Thanks, CL1...now if I can just figure out how to work the new Ipad hubby got me for Christmas...I might be able to hang around. Have I mentioned that I am technologically illiterate? Typing with one finger is HARD!
We're blood sisters! (by osmosis.. or something:)
Nice to see you there..
Ah, I see I am not alone in the illiterati culture.
NlC...We need a language, a flag, state bird, flower, secret handshake...
Merleliz... just stop any teen on the street and they can fill you in - on anything!
Acceptance is automatic, there are no notices, you will be assimilated lol.
Seriously though you are more than welcome, I am the current owner, CL is an Administrator there as are many others. An introductory article about the nation is here A New Nation with an Old Name and please feel free to join that discussion.
I see. "Open" nations automatically accept... only "Gated" requires acceptance, apparently.
Thank you, Leb!
