We're almost there! Newsvine is preparing to undergo its biggest change since its founding. We're really excited here at Newsvine Global Headquarters, and we are ready to help you through a big transition to a great upgrade.
Here's what you need to know:
Wednesday, February 6th is the last full day of Newsvine as we've come to know it. On Thursday, February 7th, Newsvine will look very different.

There's an extensive Knowledge Base here that we're continuing to update. If you've got a question that needs answering post-launch, you can begin discussions both publicly and privately here. Staff will be responding every day.
Here are some things you can do to prepare:
Take a look at your group memberships if you have them. All groups will become Nations, an entirely new construct on Newsvine that improves both discussions and publishing. We're moving beyond global discussion threads that sometimes feature thousands of comments to discussions in these Nations - community spaces that you create, grow, and make your own unique Newsvine experience.
Check out the Knowledge Base. While it will make a lot more sense when you can use and experiment with the new site, we've answered a lot of questions asked by users, many without Beta access, so if you want to study a little bit, that's the best place to start.
Get ready to try something new. This is easier written than done. It's also easier if you've been working with the new version of the site for many months, as the developers have. Newsvine's been good, and it's been one of the more enduring sites of its type on the internet. We're changing because we want it to be even better.
Most folks reading this will be doing so because they know and like Newsvine. We're changing some very important fundamentals of the site, and we'd love for it to fulfill everyone's fantasy of what a news discussion site is. [Everyone has fantasies about that, right? It's not just us?] We recognize that Newsvine is nothing without Newsviners. So please, try the new Newsvine. Create Nations, publish content, mouse over everything. Tell us what you think in the discussion forum.
February 7th is going to be a big day, but it's also the first day. Thank you for your continued support, participation, and feedback - we can't wait to continue growing with you.

I'm so excited! Really geeked to have a launch date. It's real!
This is going to be challenging, but I hope to see people hanging in there and publishing stuff.
Am I missing something here?
Being a self-identified progressive, I embrace change but I do have a couple of questions.
What prompted these drastic changes?
I have been monitoring comments about the upcoming change and overwhelmingly people don't care for it.
Reminds me of the old adage, why fix something which isn't broken?
First, these changes make it almost impossible for me to earn my fifty cents a month, since the Google/Adsense debacle.
Second, many, many, of us are members of private chat rooms which the supposed new & improved NV decided to make public, leaving us NO option other than to take our business elsewhere.
Third, who determined the 15 "nation" number? Again, there are thousands of NV members who are now forced to pick and chose.
Fourth - It has been asked repeatedly what impact changes this new format will have on First Read and NBC threads, only to be ignored.
Fifth - If Newsvine is so concerned about glitches and such, why are you implementing this during a weekday and not a weekend?
Sixth - Has anyone done solid research on the number of members who have already bailed? Or was that the strategy all along? Funny, I haven't seen anything with these improvements which will cut down on the number of re-regs.
I will close by saying I have met and made some of the most wonderful friends here - it's been a hell of a ride!
We don't need Newsvine, they NEED us!
Feisty, I have always enjoyed your "first up" responses. Thank you.
Well said Feisty. Thanks
*cracks knuckles*
The drastic part comes from not changing the site much for five years, Feisty Redhead Roselle, IL. The changes? A lot of ideas about how to improve discussion on the web, mostly.
There are lots of good old adages - someone posted the 'cut off your nose to spite your face' one. I've always been partial to this idiom:
...
Nope. No private discussions will be made public.
Less than thousands, but yes - we recognize that will be quite inconveniencing. So they won't have to choose right away.
None yet. Hopefully soon. First Read, in particular, would benefit a lot from this new version.
Earlier the better. There's also only 7 of us and we wanted a date that would offer peak support.
Yeah... Membership is at an all-time high. Retention is strong, too.
I echo that sentiment - wrote as much in the article! :)
I would like Sally or Tyler to respond to the legitimate points that Feisty makes.
What happens posting comments to First Read? Ahhh, there you are Tyler.
Probably less than thousands, but of those, because they are in many groups, probably means that they are the heaviest users of the system. That means that while the numerical figures are low, the impact is high, high enough to the point where many of the high profile users will quite possibly choose to not be a part of the new vine.
Implement on a sunday, support on monday.
Been involved in too many deployments to see that doing this midweek is a bad idea.
Well I know of a few long time, high profile users that have pretty openly stated that they more than likely won't be a part of the new vine. They won't necessarily be removing their accounts, but just won't be a part of it. This is where the 'numbers' don't really tell the whole story.
Sorry Tyler, from everything I have seen so far from long time members, that is a pipe dream? Where did these ideas come from?
Did any of the long time contributors contact Newsvine asking for these changes?
What you fail to mention is, any previous private chats will not be made public, unless they are deleted. Going forward is a whole different ball game. Did it ever occur to any of you, that we APPRECIATED the privacy?
The purpose of eliminating them is what, exactly?
So who's decision was it to do it? Does making it happen "not right away" make it any better? Kinda like the old saying "the doctor will see you soon".
Thank goodness! I have over 200 friends who are L O N G time First Read contributors long before anyone heard of Newsvine.
And, your back up plan is ???? If things don't go as expected? Then what?
Can we get some source for that claim? Everything I have read says quite the contrary.
I noticed you totally ignored my question on re-regger's... I'll take that as a "we aren't going to do a thing"
Look... I'm not trying to be argumentative here, all I want to know is who thought it was a good idea to mess with success?
I also think long time loyal members deserve some real answers...
Cause, I don't know about anyone else, but I ain't picking up what ya'll are laying down...
What I have been hearing about the new site is the limitations. I just got used to the old site sort of but a lot of the features I like aren't going to be on the new site. I consider that a dumbing down and a handicap.
The other thing is the nations Idea, that sounds like a way to divide people even more. I feel it isn't what I am looking for in a site. I will more than likely go on another search to find a site that don't have these nation divisions and limitations.
I am going to give it a shot but I will still feel limited or penned in knowing anything I write isn't going worldwide like the old version. Thats why I'm not going to post any articles yet. Each nation is going to be controlled by a very few I learned. Sounds like the same problems the old vine has that I have been reading about is only going to be multiplied.
Well thats what I gleaned from those who have been using the new vine. I don't understand why you don't leave the old vine intact so people will have a choice in the matter or a vote would have been nice too.
Tyler
Why start the site on a thursday why not start the 11th on a Monday or are you and Sally working the weekend?
Tyler,
I am one of the administrators for a public group and we would like to delete that group when the change happens next week.
There is no “Warning” message for administrators so what do I need to do to delete this group?
Since it is possible to self-delete a group in Beta, could you wait until the 7th and delete it over there?
Tyler your future is in used car sales. (Click the comment. Can't see it as a link) new, improved? snort!
Seriously?
Alrighty then, 'splain this email I got yesterday:
There was a screenshot crop there to show me where to look.
Yeah, it ain't there. So much for efficiency.
These, however, are the parts that slay me:
No, I ain't. They're GROUPS. (Nations. Pffft.) It's not Doomsday yet.
Are you kidding me? *Preselected*? Nice of you to permit me to modify that. Good grief.
Especially considering I have been reduced to clipping to my own grp despite numerous bug reports b/c my own grp has dropped off the *publish to* list & there's supposed to be no more clipping. Y'all need to FIX THAT.
Nag, nag, nag.
You can keep your *special token*. Well, actually, you are, b/c it's not there LOL
Dare I hope this will be an ongoing trend?
Whoever picked Thurs wasn't thinking, BTW. Good luck cleaning up the mess in the vacant halls on Mon. Ain't no one going to wait for y'all to get back to us some time in Mar.
If this will help anyone, here is my opinion. The only part of the Beta system I have been using from the time I started monitoring it are the 15 Nation groups I chose. I have stuck to those 15 rigidly since last year, ditching the tons of others I had, just to get a feel of of how they would work. I have only noticed two negative aspects about them so far:
1. If people are forced to choose only 15, they are likely to choose the most populated - and predictable topic - groups which gradually kills the other creative and diverse ones.
2. It needs about 20, rather than 15. That number is far too low and inflexible to cope with new invitations etc.
Otherwise, I haven't seen any adverse effects using so few groups.
I think the trick is finding a balance: not so few that people say 'screw it' and ditch the more eclectic ones, and not so many that there's little point in using the smaller ones because hardly anyone (excepting for a relatively tiny amount of groups) uses them. I don't fault NV for trying to find a sweet spot, and I imagine that they'll adjust the number up or down if they need to, but I guess they've gotta start somewhere.
I think I will wait until after the launch before giving my verdict. It will be easy for me to compare because I have all my stats for what's been happening on my column since I've been on Newsvine. If anything dramatically changes either way, I'll know soon enough. But I do like the new front page, and even though it is not as easy to navigate as the current Classic version, it is certainly attractive to the eye.
Tyler
I am a long time contributor to First Read. Newsvine not so
much. Why do you ask? Because quite frankly I find Newsvine and it’s Officials
just about as disingenuous as you have been here in answering questions from
most contributors to First Read.
I was one of the first posters that had a contribution
deleted after Newsvine took over moderation of First Read. Didn’t break any
rules just didn’t fit with your understanding of how First Read was supposed to
work. As I tried to follow your rules and ask for explanation as to how this
happened all I got for my efforts was “crickets”
I am the member of a group that is the only one to my
knowledge was deliberately hacked and what we thought were private
conversations were posted and misconstrued on First Read in an effort to embarrass
and “shame” our members. It still occasionally shows up in an effort to stop
debate. Newsvine response: Well you’ll didn’t strictly follow our rules for
making your Group Private. So sorry but it is a “glitch” in our system. Since
then “crickets”
Then we went through the “collapsed by the community” phase.
Folks figured out real quick how to game the system and stifle debate by
organizing and collapsing comments that they didn’t like for one reason or
another. The only fix you’ll had for that was to essentially make the feature
inoperative on First Read. So now we have to put up with comments that should legitimately
be moderated out. Most of the time when you’ll were questioned about why a Legitimate
post was “collapsed by the community” and to restore it the answer was “crickets”
Then we went through the “deleted” stage. Organized groups
soon discovered how to click advertising and thus delete a post. Newvines
response; another “glitch” in your system and basically disable the feature.
After that “crickets”.
I could go on and on with problems that Newsvine Moderation
(or lack thereof) apparently has no answer for but this is already getting to
long.
So now you’ll say you going to change things. And it’s all
going to be “peaches and cream” Sorry but I don’t agree with you. It looks like
just another attempt by Newsvine to gloss over a multitude of problems that
they either can’t or won’t address.
I was involved in building the First Read Community long
before there was a Tyler and Newsvine. My contributions to that effort (no
matter how small they are judged by others) is a source of some pride with me
and many others. My contributions to First Read will be more limited after your
conversion if they don’t disappear entirely.
Like my Ace Fiesty put it I ain’t buying what you’ll are putting
down and that is a stone cold shame.
Good luck going forward
Ms Cyprah: Since you are one of my favorite folks who seed on Newsvine, maybe you could help me understand this: If there are only going to be 15 Nations, then why are we told that all groups will become Nations?
Can we get rid of a group that we don't want to turn into a Nation? Thanks
Because all groups will now be entitled Nations. They are just changing their names, that's all. But YOU have to choose which groups you wish to belong to. It could be the ones you are in already, but they will be restricted to 15 only. You have to ditch some of them to get down to that number.
It will STILL be a Nation. You just don't choose it.
Think of it is this way: Pretend you are just joining Newsvine on February 7th. On that day, you would only be allowed 15 groups/Nations from every group you see. Except that if you do have a problem limiting your groups, you will get a little more time after the 7th to whittle them down.
Thanks for the compliment. Very nice of you to say, newdayDawning. Hope you find this of value. :o)
Thank you Ms. Cyprah. I think I get it now.
Can we delete a group that we don't wish to keep. There is an old group that has 3 members that we would like to delete.
Tyler and Sally
I have a suggestion ,
How about we have our 15 active groups but we can have space to put 5 in inactive , we could deactivate on and reactivate another and go back and forth... so we have a total of 20 grooups but only up to 15 can be active at one timePlease?????
That's a good idea, MJL, and gives room to breathe.
By the way, thanks for your invite. Very kind of you, but as I am on a full 15 groups just now, I cannot act upon it yet.
Oh, yes, I should think so. Nothing has really changed in that respect except the number of groups we are allowed. However, I'm sure someone will put you right if I'm wrong.:o)
Thank you, Ms Cyprah. Want to say again how much pleasure I have had from your seeds and the discussions. Breath of fresh air.
That's ok I understand...it will remain open :)
Nah Floyd!
The gang of collapse cowards are still roving - my comment #1 was deleted only yesterday;
http://firstread.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/01/31/16794835-biden-new-gun-controls-likely-wont-end-shootings
There was NOTHING in that comment that even came close to a COH violation!
Now you sit back and wait to see how many hours it will take if they decide to restore it...
Is anyone else having major problems with their conversation tracker? Mine has been wonky all week...
Most definitely Fiesty with a lot of repeats and a page this size takes forever to display, not d/L, but build and display with all the 3rd parties involved now.
I'm going to go have breakfast waiting for this comment to post :o)
My question is this:
I am the owner of several groups. When I click through the Redline Banner the only group it appears I am allowed to delete is the one I don't WANT to delete.
How can I toggle and delete one of the other groups?
Tyler and I will still be monitoring the site for re-regs.
Sorry you feel that way. I think the Newsvine staff is doing s great job of letting you know what's in store. I can only urge you to try the new format, have an open mind, and see how you like it. If things need to be tweaked later, they will be.
I assure you all though, a change needed to be made to keep the community having great conversations on the web. And we didn't take the changes lightly, a LOT of planning went into this new version. I mean, we had a 7-month Beta!
Can you email me privately about this? I am surprised it doesn't work, but let's get this fixed for you so you can at least check it out and then decide what you want to do :)
Exactly. This number can be changed later on.
I really do want to urge you all to forget what you heard from others about the New Newsvine, try it out February 7th, and give it a chance. I am positive this will be a great change!
I am going into beta and looking at it more closely but it is hard to track new comments
My tracker said two new comments by Northern girl and dr Know, but it didn't go to their comments
Okay???? so how do I track new comments...
also when I look at my tracker , and scroll down to view it evrything runs together in a mumbo jumbo mess
That would be a bummer. Note the bit where they won't have to choose immediately, though.
This will by my first 'deployment' - I like that phrase; I'll defer to the site's founders on this one.
...
Not sure how to answer this. Pretty sure there are no opiate (ab)users in the office.
Many brains.
Yup. Wasn't a decision taken lightly, but it was extraneous to the new site design.
Practically, better allocation of resources; ensuring privacy was a lot to support. Philosophically, Newsvine has always been a place to share, and eliminating private groups fits with that vision.
Unanimous staff.
If it keeps even one person around to explore, then yes.
Keep fixing things. Feisty Redhead Roselle, IL, I'm answering all of these questions on principle, but a lot of these leave me scratching my head.
We don't share internal numbers, but there are a lot of sites that monitor traffic, with varying degrees of accuracy. Quantcast is a decent one.
It'd be okay if you were. It's kind of what we do around here.
It's great that you think Newsvine's a success. As time-consuming as this, I'm really enjoying reading testimonies about how much people care about the site. Better than publishing it to crickets.
We want to succeed in a new way.
I don't know if that's ever been done - when a new product's released, there's usually no turning back in my experience. Newsvine's been steady for 5 years. This particular change is inexorable. I really hope you like it, A.Leon.
A launch means everyone's aiming to be on a 7-day schedule.
What browser are you using? That happened to me yesterday for awhile. It usually sorts out in a few.
More rounding up:
Dennis, Columbus, Ohio, I see the group you're referencing and you're not an administrator - I think you've found a bug if it's still displaying as one of your groups, because it appears to have one member and it's not you. [If you want to continue the discussion and reference the specific group, you can begin a private discussion here.]
I can only wear one necklace at a time, bore-head007. Odd parallel, though - this is something new! I'm more like a Tesla salesman.
Except it's free.
And people have the keys already.
Okay, this just falls apart.
Man, this got apocalyptic quick.
Independent Redneck Va., there's a bit of a timeline disconnect here. First Read wasn't powered by Newsvine for a long time, but they existed side by side. [And the commenting system that powered First Read before Newsvine was abysmal. Pre-approved comments are the worst.]
There's no timetable for the new Newsvine to power First Read, or any other NBCNews.com platform, but I can't wait to pitch Vaughn and the FR crew on it after it gets rolling here.
If - in my mind, when - the change happens, I hope you and your compatriots form a Nation and try it out.
Clara KCMO, would you mind sharing a screenshot with me here? You can make the discussion private if you wish. 'Toggling' should just be scrolling and checking boxes.
Tyler, I am the owner and I booted Dennis this morning, thinking that was the problem!
Now I think it's because the one I am trying to punt is technically a 'public' group - although we've closed the drapes and no one can peek in.
At any rate, how do you screen cap? you mean private email?
I can't seem to post to you because the 'Category' field is locked on 'Select Category' and there are no categories in the list to select from.
I have the screen shot in a word doc for you; but I just double checked all settings again and there simply isn't a check box to remove this group. Given the trouble with the report a bug issue,...I'm not terribly surprised.
Tyler,
I clicked on your “here” link but it would not allow me to select a “category”. All it said was “Choose” with no drop down options.
Is that another bug with the new SW?
Thanks Clara, that is what I was about to tell Tyler.
I had Tyler's email from a couple of years ago and sent him the message that way. Thanks, Dennis!
Tyler Timeline questions aside you can point to one of you'lls many problems on this thread. Why in the world was Fiesty's question of you "collapsed by the community" You got a moderation problem and you haven't been able to solve it and don't show no signs of solving it. Maybe you don't know how to solve it but until you do solve it alls your doing is moving the deck chairs on the Titanic so's you have something to do until that Sucker sinks.
This just worked for me, try again.
I never thought I'd ever agree with a liberal, much less fiesty red-head, but I have to say this -
The fact that membership is at an all time high says a lot about something being right and is in it's self a reason not to change. Having not seen the new product I'll hold final judgement, however, I'm less than thrilled and edging into disappointment. I hope the final product remains user friendly without becoming somehow more divisive, as it sounds like it may become.
Sally,
Thanks … It still did not drop down selections … sorry
Tyler. This is before the gold necklace generation. So much excitement here
Whats Tesla? heh heh.
It's been great having a place to talk, air differences, meet new people and view different perspectives. It will be a shame when it goes away, either through wholsale changes or disinterest caused by the changes.
Losing members is progress? Seriously Tyler/Sally? Let me point out that as members lose interest and quit showing up - the most likely senerio is that they won't be back. This is acceptible? Preferable?
.
http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/newsvine.com#" href="http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/newsvine.com"> http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/newsvine.com#
70% of the traffic here on Newsvine is from India???
...and according to statsaholic traffic is way down (by2/3rds) since last year, down to under a half million unique visitors. http://www.statsaholic.com/newsvine.com
Use of the Newsvine widget is virtually non existent. http://w3techs.com/technologies/details/so-newsvinewidgets/all/all
Not sure where Tyler gets his info from, I couldn't get the link he posted to show anything but they want you to get an account to see anything. Maybe if you pay for the stats they tell you what you want to hear???
The vine will be dead within a week of it making any drastic change! It's dropping like a rock here in the states! If you listen real hard, that wooshing sound you hear is all the users going to other sites! There are just too many other sites out there just like newsvine or better, most all of them are faster and less intrusive too.
This is flawed thinking! I am here BECAUSE of the 40 million or more people! If I want an intimate conversation I will use a chat room! It is the huge numbers of people that bring in the varied opinions and discussion points. That's what made NV so good. Take that away and we got nothing.
Tyler claims that membership is up and retention is good, but that doesn't seem to hold true for those of us that are here watching what is going on. Retention is good because they ban people, but leave up the content they had. re-regs are probably counted as new users.
Actual users posting articles appears to be down and AP and NBC seem to now be the biggest contributors to the vine.
Divide and conquer!? Pick your nation and go to war with the other nations?
...No thanks, I'd rather have a discussion with the people in the world on the internet, not one nation.
I'll more than likely be at http://www.cerebralrising.net/ after the vine changes. It's an up and coming site that has some great people there. As more people find out about it, it will grow fast! The best part is that there are NO ADS running on the pages! No tracking cookies! Newsvine sets both the facebook and the adchoice cookies and both are tracking your every move, even after you leave Newsvine and even if you do not have a facebook account! That info they collect from tracking you is then sold to others and NBC/newsvine is making money from running those ads and cookies. Your information is compiled and used to target advertising and many other things!
I'll hate to see the vine go, but they feel they have to change the site, so we can't do much about it! They asked for our opinions and most are in favor of NOT changing the site, so that proves how much weight the opinions of the users are. Only thing we can do is move on.
I question what that 70% from india is from, because quite honestly, I don't see much in the way of indian posters. Could that be on the NBCNews side?
Sammy,
Thank you for taking the time to research those stats! Wish I could vote your comment up 100 x's!
This whole nation thing has a very cliquey feel about it, starting with having to pick and chose & it spirals down from there...
Whatever... good luck to them, they're gonna need it!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexa_Internet#Accuracy_of_ranking_by_the_Alexa_Toolbar
and:
Yup, exactly who I want to go to for reliable information.
Thank you, sammy sezso! Lots of good info. I knew about the tracking and their host's benefits, which I learned after realizing that if I set my privacy setting too high, then the sites won't let me in. Same with Google and gmail, and other accounts (merchants). It seems NV is hoping that 'new blood' will have a different view. Maybe some will. Thanks for the site info, too.
Thanks
I do.
Thank you, spiffie. Alexa is not a reliable source. India is where my stalker-troll was routing through. He did not actually live there.
I have thought he was still here using a different moniker, SW. ..Similar 'voice'. Have you thought so ? I also have a couple names in mind, but after the 7th I won't be able to keep tracking them.
sw,
if they are routing through a proxy, then there is not going to be a way to get real stats. I can see that as part of why india is so high, but 70% though.
Based on the comments that I see, I would almost throw that particular stat right out.
Although a decline of readership would show up though. You just couldn't say where that decline is from.
Also, user retention is high isn't a good indicator, because accounts don't expire. So someone who doesn't delete their account is 'retained' even if they never log in.
Here are the unique users stats for the United States. http://siteanalytics.compete.com/newsvine.com/
These aren't much better, http://www.semrush.com/info/newsvine.com
The traffic from India may be coming from newsvine widgets running on websites there???
I agree
As far as the accuracy of Alexa goes, They address that in their about section. The toolbar IS considered malware because it reports back to Alexa,(duh) the toolbars are used voluntarily by millions of users and Alexa also gathers additional information from additional sources other than their toolbars. Their stats, like any others, can be argued as being not perfectly accurate, but they do give a general idea of where the site is as far as site ranking, traffic and popularity.
I welcome someone to present some stats that show how great Newsvine is doing since NBC took over!
What happens if we don't want to join any nation or group on the new vine?
CL1, I'm sure he's still here torturing others. I haven't been very active so I haven't run across any trolls except the foul user name.
That's good, SW.
My guess is that's him. I don't see him pestering anyone; just 'sounds' like him, commenting around.
Sammy,
Well I took a hiatus for a few months, and I can say this, the traffic has dropped considerably since I came back, so the numbers seem to make sense.
What I see right now is not very many people are posting articles, a lot of people have left, and a lot of what is being posted is just trolling crap. I would think that the semrush site might be a bit more accurate, only because it shows the spike just around the election. The other site might be averaged out taking out the peaks and valleys though.
The drop though isn't just surprising, its shocking, and it certainly does indicate that there needs to be a change at the vine, but is that change the new vine?
As for NBC, the graphs indicate that the problem started before NBC took over ownership, but to be honest with you, I think the priority for the vine and NBC is on the nbc side of things, the news site, not newsvine itself. The NBC side creates the justification for newsvine to exist.
not sure what else to say
I'll just say I remember Propeller. They thought they had to change and did .
It turned out bad for them and we who were on that site. They promised the same things and are now history.
numbers are at an all time high?
oh I am sorry....not many people have been more active than I over the last 3 years..and I can tell you from what I can see participation is by far down over the last 4 months.
This place is like a graveyard now with comments compared to a couple years ago.
sorry, just dont see it tyler.
and the differences in appearance to me is like the difference between windows 7 and 8 and I am struggling with that right now.
sammy
the majority of traffic is from india because that is where all the spammers are from. My website gets most its traffic from there too...and I delete tons of accounts that are nothing but crap .....from india.
oh also my tech support is based in India......could be they have some connections there as well.
I think the India traffic are the people making the spam and adverts.
Clearly, most users don't want the wholesale changes, yet NV/Tyler/Sally have an agenda. What the majority of users want is not part of that agenda. So sad, so frustrating.
Is this an argument for or against new newsvine?
Brian,
Even just a couple of months ago, traffic was up, today, I have seen at most 10 new comments whereas a few months ago, I would get several hundred in my tracker.
Now I don't have thousands of friends, but most of my friends are frequent users,
What is even more troubling is that the biggest drop seems to have happened right after this announcement was made, and I don't just mean big, I mean it has DROPPED OFF A CLIFF. I don't even really see much on the front page.
I've been on all day and it seems as busy as usual. I haven't gotten to some of the articles I want to read due to responding to comments.
I'm wondering if the amount of posting done on this thread is an indication of the current level of interest.....
it could be my tracker, it could be that I only have about a page of friends, but it also could be that most of my page of friends have decided to just drop off the system. I know that a few have decided to leave, most of them have been beta testers.
I, for one, think a good old fashioned culling is just what Newsvine needs. I think it's gotten away from its core premise and that these changes are more in line with newsvine from years 1-3 than 4 till now. With that said, I don't really buy into the theories (based mostly on bad tracking and observational evidence rather than real numbers) that traffic is down.
Usage from a core group, maybe, but again: I can only hope that's the case. I'm really looking forward to seeing how 1) a new group of core users or 2) those who stick around who embrace challenge and change live up to the Newsvine motto.
I really, really miss the pioneering spirit that used to exist here.
The friends I've heard from don't seem nearly as "geeked" as Tyler, in fact they seem to be leaning toward leaving NV. Time will tell - but from what I see of the new platform it doesn't interest me nearly as much as the current format. There seem to be lots of "nations", but if there is a tendency to develop cliques doesn't that remove- or at least impede - the open debate we have here?
We'll see how it plays out.
I cannot support the notion that 'traffic is down'. With the transition in progress, it is probably not as clear cut as it could be, so difficult to read accurately. But speaking from personal experience alone, my traffic has been increasing consistently, and in some cases dramatically. Yes, I know I'm also a regular poster, but if there is less traffic, per se, then I should also be seeing the effects of that, not the comments and figures going up!
Chuck,
In going through comments from Staff and long-time users, it appears to me that the 'focus' is on new members joining the site that will accept the new program. They want discussion groups that will function as a group of members following group standards set by the group admins, and seem to be less interested in 'who' they actually are. This is a function that works on other sites, why they seem confident in making the change, most likely.
We're spinning our wheels pulling for us long-time users; we don't matter in their big scheme of things.
Either we stay and try it with their new members, or we leave. Not that I'm happy with that reality - but a reality it is. :) FR sent, if you agree.
I may be middle-aged but I still have a lot to learn. I plan to continue to "get smarter here". If that means learning a new way then I'll learn.
I know they are hoping it will all work out the same, but in observing other sites with this concept, it is not the same as 'old Newsvine.' This new concept has 'different' objectives; that's fine, and it does work in seeking those objectives.
It's slightly similar to the difference between public and private school (based on my own experiences). They both have their own incentives and rewards. It just depends on what the student is wanting to gain.
Just what are those objectives? I don't want to be part of any secret plot. The only objective I saw on classic was to provide users a place to read, write, and discuss news and other subjects while sharing profits from advertising. Is that changing?
No, I didn't mean to imply a secret plot. I was just pointing out the difference between a discussion-based forum, opposed to one such as old Newsvine that was based on information pieces without discussion, the News as info only, 'topics' for display - in other words, more free-form.
Categories are up now. Apologies. Clara KCMO, responded to your e-mail.
It'd be nice to retain every non-spammer, Chuck in Olathe. But it's not realistic; people leave.
There's a fair amount of discussion around who New Newsvine is built for - I think the answer's the same as it ever was - 'people who like news'. If veterans like it, great. If it brings in a ton of new folks, fantastic. It's not a product meant to engineer a certain type of person but a product we hope people use in a lot of different ways.
Sounds like a case for a change to me, Marshall James - even though I'm not seeing the graveyard. :)
Marshall, I am not sure which place you are talking about, because it is certainly not the Newsvine I know and participate in. I might not like everything about the transition, but one could never call it a 'graveyard'! I guess we all see what we wish to see to justify our beliefs and anxieties? Or is it that your little patch is the graveyard while all the ativity is going on around you?
Great attitude, SW Missouri Mule. We don't learn from fear and forebodings, but from the willingness to experiment and see what's possible. As my hero, Dr Martin Luther King Jr, once said:
Indeed.
Tyler sez:
It looks like we're not just talking about a couple of old-timers, it looks like a significant number.
The obvious, though not stated second part of that comment is "Too bad if they don't." Tyler - nobody asked me or any of my Friends that have contacted me what we wanted, what we liked about the old format, or if we wanted change. Perhaps this is why a lot of the older members are saying they feel left out - and that they don't matter.
It is no wonder that you were chosen as an Ambassador for the London Games, MsC♥, of the brilliant smile! You are a natural wonder all by yourself!
Wow! That's a first even for me!!! Thanks for the amazing compliment!
FIN, you really know how to make a gal's head bigger! Hope your Sunday is going very well. :o)
CL1 sez:
Chuck,
Agreed, I believe you are correct. However, if that is the format for other sites then what will set NV apart from the pack? They had a one of a kind product and they're dumping that to become a duplication? What an interesting concept.
Again, agreed. It is what it is. My ranting won't change anything, but I've gained a few new friends in the bargain. Thank you for the invitation.
tyler -- #1.77 - Sat Feb 2, 2013 11:29 PM PST
Correct. It's called "churn". As long as the number of new people coming in exceeds the number of people leaving (positive churn), there's not a problem. But there is a problem. You're just not seeing it.
Newsvine-the-website and the Newsvine-comment-engine are two separate entities.
Any time someone wants to comment on the MSNBC/NBCNews, articles they have to use the Newsvine-comment-engine. That inflates the numbers of users using the comment engine, and gives it a positive churn rate. After the MSNBC/NBCNews split, use of the comment engine skyrocketed. But most of those people don't migrate over to Newsvine-the-website, and we are losing "Viners" faster than they are being replaced (negative churn). I don't think you see that, though, because you only look at the total number of page views, and not what is generating those page views.
I sent you a link to an article I wrote, The FireFox Users group Massacre, that's a pretty good demonstration of Newsvine-the-website's negative churn rate. Pretty much the same thing happened when I purged the WTF? group. If everyone purged their groups and Friends lists of inactive members, I think they would be shocked to find out there's really not all that many people here. How many of those 588 users on your friends list are still here, Tyler? I know that save the cheerleader hasn't been seen since 5/24/2010.
Something that, though I understand the reason for it, is still kind of comical: you and Sally restore collapsed comments for "clarity". I hate to have to tell you this, but clarity hasn't been seen on Newsvine since 7/21/2007... ;)
The thing that keeps Newsvine-the-website's page views artificially inflated is the spammers. If you look at the Leaderboard's seeders for a week (you have to wait for it to calculate), any user on that board that has a popularity rank of 50000 is most probably a spammer. The situation is even worse on the Leaderboard's authors for a week page. The spammers get in the Greenhouse, and they don't care if they get any votes or comments. All they want to do is run macros and link-farm for page views. If you go to Newsvine.com Site Info, click "Traffic Rank" and then expand the "Where Visitors Go on Newsvine.com" box, you'll see that the majority of users listed there are spammers. If you got rid of the spammers, Newsvine would probably disappear out of the site rankings. Scary thought.
Ms CYPRAH -- #1.78 - Sun Feb 3, 2013 6:19 AM PST
You're getting more and more page views, votes, and comments, because you're having to share them with fewer and fewer publishers. For the things I'm interested in, the "sidewalks get rolled up" earlier and earlier.
Maybe I missed it somewhere but the transition from groups to Nations is very distressing to me. I stopped doing Beta because it forced me to pare to 15 groups to continue and that comes to fewer than 3 per year for the time I've been here! That seems like a way to restrict involvement but not improve it.
Now I'm curious if my groups will arbitrarily be erased in transition and what options if any are available to those of us who think 15 is nothing more than a way to jam us into a cloud computing profit model, rather than support the community that built this place. Apologies if that was addressed somewhere already, but its my main worry and haven't seen an answer that doesn't seem like a more nicely worded assurance, lump it you'll like it and feel like a finger other than a thumbs up. Here's hoping there's a happy answer, thanks! :~)
Well, Sir Richard, thanks for that observation, but I guess we'll all see what the true picture is like after the transition.
MS CYPRAH - The problem for all of us is - for a moment assuming that the long-time users here are correct - is that when the "true picture" comes into focus it will be much to late......
You should have received an email if you are in more than 15 groups. Did you? If not email me and I will get it out to you.
You will, in time, need to pair them down to 15, but that does not happen immediately upon launch. You will have time to make this decision and plenty of notice.
You can read more about it here.
As for the other comments, please be patient and give the New Newsvine a try. We want to keep all our old timers, and really feel this will be a great improvement. Of course, feedback is always welcome, but let's try it first and see. It might grow on you. I think it will be a great change and make the conversations on Newsvine even better!
Sally - kindly asking - if the group of seven really cared what the old timers wanted why weren't we asked?
How do I get every Newsvine page to look like this one. The others are an abomination and designed for 12 year olds with ipads.
Well, actually, their lower limit is 13 -- their "target" audience.. (j/k!)
Althought i dislike the new look of Newsvine im getting used to it a tiny bit still miss the old look though
but why on a Thursday to start the new look its kinda an odd day to begin it
This is great news!
The Vine would be even better if I could save and post on my page the Comments and Feedback section. It wont work. Why dont you all fix whats BROKEN first, then implement sweet change?
>Why wont anyone who represents The Vine help Thee Ox? Why?
I'm a nice guy who loves his Mother and Puppies. WHY??!!
LoL... I thought our page stays the same over in Beta... meaning we won't lose anything, yes?
The sweet change fixes a lot.
All your content is still there - we hung on to lists of Friends and Watchlist, too, though they're not existing features anymore. Unfortunately for Thee Ox, Comments and Feedback isn't something that's making the leap.
Unfortunately for Thee Ox? Thee hardly doubts it, Tyler.
Don't matter to me if it stays or goes.
Thanks to Lance, I was able to visit the beta side of Newsvine.
Over the years, when discussing the future of beta and Newsvine, it was said that we would be able to enhance our column page, our home page, so-to-speak. I have now discovered that Newsvine Beta is not offering that feature. So, my question is:
Why were the Beta testers able to enhance their column with different colors and different fonts? For a very long period, members were told they too would have this feature once the switch took place, and it is this very feature I looked forward to using. It was to be a way to distinguish ourselves from others and most importantly, it was to be a way for us to exhibit ourselves with flair and style.
I don't consider changing an avatar or a one-line-bio as enhancements for my column page.
This saddens me greatly.
That's a good point. Our columns on the new site are even less customizable than they are now. It's actually worse. Much worse. And such a god awful waste of screen space.
I wanted purple :(
I wanted Brian Ford to help me design my page, because my CSS program was too difficult for me to figure out (I have Beta 2. format), but he doesn't like me (:) so I gave up.
Can we format it? I don't think so....
One eyed, one armed purple people eater ...
you betcha, wink, wink :?
Prior Beta, TheShrew. I think that one started in 2009, though it's been so long...I could have the year wrong. I liked my header image a lot, and I miss it a little, too.
If my current avatar doesn't give it away, that's my favorite color, MJL-3.
I love Purple...:)
Tyler
You and Sally are on a lot of friends lists...are you accepting invite to groups or not?
I sent you both one, so please let me know :)
MJL-3
I love purple too, and I know my question as well as my longing is of little consequence at this point, but truly, I was looking forward to making my column my own. We are all so different and it's human nature to want to display those difference in some fashion of art or expression.
I also believe that how we express ourselves visually, also helps how we express ourselves in conversation. With the feeling of confinement, and knowing we won't all be as open to the public as we hoped, it would have been nice.
Brian Ford mentioned the "pioneering spirit" of what was once Newsvine, and I agree with him completely. I only wish that spirit included self-expression in addition to the use of words.
Tyler, please explain what exactly you mean when you say, "Unfortunately comments and feedback aren't making the shift." Is it simply the items on the author page or thread comments affected?
I'm pretty sure he's talking about the "Comments & Feedback" section on column pages (since he capitalized them). No one would be able to hold discussions if they couldn't comment on threads.
Yes it seems, but transferring all the old thread content, all of it, is not something that feels good to assume, but confirm. The idea that discussion still occurs wasn't in doubt, thanks!
Yes, exactly.
Sally
I sent out a TON of invites to my Friends Nation but in Beta it doesn't show them all, when we switch will they be lost????? OMG please tell me no....
Also in beta , when you send an invite my email address shows, why can't it be a general nv mail????? I don't want everyone to have my email address ....It doesn't do that in Classic.
Sally, I have a problem with the email feature in Beta as well, we used to be able to substitute a different email address, I created a generic email address to deal with questions from members to a guide, now I can't use it... I'd rather not have my default email that I originally signed in with out in the world.
The ability to enter an arbitrary name and email address is probably a bad idea. It's too easy to make it look like a message is coming from someone else. One or the other fields needs to be set to reduce the likelihood of shenanigans.
The alternative would be for Newsvine to allow you to register (and verify) multiple email addresses and then select available ones via a dropdown. This seems like an edge case to me, though, in that not many people would have need of such a feature. Were it me making the strike list, I'd put that pretty far down.
rottlady
That is an excellent Idea !!!!!!
Well, I can work around it if I can't get a change, but I also may just have them change my default email to the one I want to use for guide questions.
The only question I have is if the Google Analytics and adsense accounts also have to changed? If so, I'm not going to change anything. Spiffie, any idea?
Thanks MJL, we'll see...
I haven't heard one way or t'other, but I'd be surprised if we had to change anything. They have our Google Analytics code; they just have to insert it in their templates wherever convenient.
Why? Every email has a Message ID that can be used to track down the source.
That's why they always ask for the full headers when someone has an email complaint.
Because I'm sure Sally and Tyler have better things to do than track down every message ID that comes their way. Part of good systems design is reducing the burden of pointless administrative work.
Ya know, unless that's your thang....
Oh snap.
crackle, pop...
I seriously doubt Staff is going to ban someone where the only evidence is an email address. They're going to want to make sure that the email even came from Newsvine's servers.
Who said anything about banning? There's cognitive load involved in even being forced to think about potential shenanigans. The smart move is to remove even the potential.
I'm with Spiffie, removing the possibility of possible fraud is better. I'll just change my email when the dust settles...
Wow, you really did, MJL-3! I see at least a few hundred invited on the 'Invited' tab on your Nation's members page in Beta. Is it possible that the Viners you're missing already accepted or rejected invites? You won't lose invites upon launch.
Yeah, this is what we have now, and either way, we're not trying to moderate much 'Contact this Author' form correspondence. Locking the email has a few distinct advantages - easier to corroborate reports of harassment [rare!], deters that harassment by removing the option to enter a fake email [again, rare, but we'll have to make it rarer].
You can always change your own associated email address in account settings - you'll need to have access to the one you're changing it to, so you can click the validation email, but that's it. :)
Analytics and AdSense are independent of your email - and each other, actually, though I'm sure Google prohibits multiple Google Accounts. spiffie has a high batting average.
Ok, I took the leap and made the change. Would someone please send me an email via Contact this author so I can check it?
Thanks Tyler and spiffie!
I have 408 pending,
95 accepted and
200 more to send out...I just hope it doesn't implode NV 3.0 :)
I ......am......loved :)
Spiffie: Maybe "tracking down every message ID" = job security?
If the roll-out is the catastrophe I predict, they might be glad of some job security.
Not a job I'd want, to be sure.
Sally Or Tyler,
Will you please e-mail me and tell me how to delete my account and have all of my comments, seeds and articles removed from the newsvine.com websites?
Thanks.
sammy
WTH, no....
https://secure.newsvine.com/_tps/_accounts/global/settings
The Last
Houseitem on the left. Will that remove the comments too?
It says that it does (when it prompts you for your password) but this guy might disagree.
It used to, but not any more. Too many deleted comments were causing disruptions in the discussions.
You can request a total deletion via email, but I don't think they'll go for it.
Could I continue posting or not? Thanks.
Can you elaborate? You can definitely continue posting.
The End of a good thing has come....
Fantastic news for who?
Hey, Lebowsky! Gotta agree with your comment. Came back to the vine only to have it not be the Vine I came to like. Don't lose touch, buddy.
Oh lebowski, I'm really depressed now. I don't know where to go (new site). The whole concept of being forced into groups in order to discuss with those we know is really depressing to me.
Hope to see you and others somewhere, in the future!!
There you are :o) I wouldn't miss the fireworks lol
3.1
Thanks Mr. Tyler, now I am ready for a new challenge.
My question was prompted because I am a member of the DK. However, I had to type longer than (let's say) 500 words and that was too much for me.
Me too. Getting this new job is like a wonderful gift.
Lebowsky, my friend, don't be so gloomy until you've tried it. Yes, you will lose certain cherished things, but gradually you will also appreciate some new things. That's the nature of change: Nothing stands still for our benefit. Always loss and gain! :o)
Hi Ms C it is good to see you. I however don't think my "gloom" is unfounded as I have been trying the Beta since July 2012 and of course is just my opinion. For a person with you well deserved stature here on NV and elsewhere this Nation I have been experimenting with may be of interest to you, either as is or a model for your own.
Old NewsVine created 9/2012 and publicly introduced here A New Nation with an Old Name on Jan 14, 2013.
For me, variety and community is golden and this is an attempt to maintain that :o)
Thanks for the link, Lebowsky. Interesting discussion. I see what you're saying. But I still believe we cannot hold back change otherwise you and I wouldn't be on computers and we would still be riding the horse and cart!!
The best thing to do in situations like this is to help to make it the kind of site we all want than to expect the worst of it - or condemn it - before we even try it.
I look forward to sharing your great thoughts and company, as usual, after the changeover!! :o)
Ms C I wish you wouldn't presume that I am against change and I will state emphatically that I am not to settle that. I do however believe that I can express my qualified opinion on a proposed change, scheduled change and final product especially with experience under my belt on this change. The point is still that I am only 1 opinion on the "gloom" side, a few more make a consensus which is true for the "fantastic" side as well. A collection of those will decide the success of this change.
I absolutely would encourage those who have not to give this puppy a test drive and decide for themselves how they like it and for most, that is up and coming. For those that have, my opinion is that the consensus is on the negative side. Something that maybe should have been paid closer attention to during this process. My opinion was/is that the negative opinion was ignored and dam the torpedoes, its full speed ahead.
A site that discourages a majority of it's users to the point of abandonment is in danger of never recovering even with back-stepping. Are we there yet? Time will tell, let's roll the dice :o)
Lebowsky, I am entirely with you on this. There hasn't been any effort to really deal with the anxieties of members. I appreciate that management has been busy with the changeover, but I have never forgotten Maya Angelou in this regard: "People will forget what you say, they might forget what you do, but they'll never forget how you make them FEEL."
And a lot of Viners were left feeling helpless, frustrated, vulnerable and needlessly anxious, especially over the Adsense debacle, without any word from management to placate, reassure or encourage them. That does not show care and appreciation of members. We don't get support from others by ignoring their concerns when it suits us.
So, don't get me wrong. I am not suggesting that you are just being negative, because we all experience things differently. I am just saying to wait until the launch to see how you cope with it before writing it off or simply expecting the worst.
Oh I am waiting Ms C, hence that Nation, but at the same time I'm spending time saying good bye to those that are leaving and that is no fun.
You haven't seen the last of me yet :o)
I think I just joined, Leb. There were a couple of days that I had to delete everything in my tracker due to not being able to stay up on it and the sheer volume. I think I may have missed the "initial launch."
BTW - I agree with everything you say about the New Newsvine on the Block. Not a happy camper.
Glad to hear it, Lebowsky. I treasure my real friends on the Vine. :o)
Hi Shelby, I just checked and yes you're in - Welcome aboard - it is an automatic acceptance so there is no waiting, and No One has to answer the phone so to speak :o)
Me too Ms C and I certainly share your concerns about eyes and reading on the new layouts. Maybe that is something we can polish together to encourage some better contrasts :o)
I liked the way BoreHead left a hint that there was a link present, it helped lol.
If anybody is listening lol.
We definitely didn't mean to do this, and going forward this will NOT be the case!
I agree the traffic has really decreased. I know A LOT of people who have left and gone to another site. They may still have an account open here, but they're not participating here.
I was ask to be a beta tester about 6 months ago, but I had no contacts to give my opinions or complaints to or anyplace to discuss with other testers except on open boards which helped not at all. I notified the powers that be, and I was given a link where I could go, and the link didn't work, and I told the powers that be, that it wouldn't let me access it, all I got was too many redirects, and NOTHING. So no one got any feedback from me. I'm sure there were others in my situation, but who knows as there was no place to get an answer. Am I frustrated? The answer if yes.
Me too, Rescue. I was asked to be a Beta tester (have no clue why) and that was it - no opinion surveys, nothing. I guess they track what you did on Beta is all I can tell.
They wouldn't have much to track on me since I tried it and it just wasn't user friendly, so I'd be in Classic about 95% of the time.
Well I guess this is adios to all my friends. From what I'm gathering the Beta is going to be more trouble than I'm willing to endure. I'll stay in touch with those that I have email addresses for. Thanks for the memories, the good, the bad and the ugly ones.
Mike
You do not have permission to leave...You are taking away the diversity in my group, join up and try..
It could be fun :)
Luv you too MJL. I noticed I got 5 stars for my comment. I'm not sure if it's because I'm leaving, or they agreed with my comment. lol As to your group, I wasn't even aware I was in it. That's what many of us are talking about when considering packing it up. We don't have the slightest idea what's going on or how to navigate the new system. It's taken me 2 years to get proficient enough with the classic as to make it enjoyable, and now we are expected to retool all over again to a more complicated, less enjoyable format. I'll visit Thursday and check it out, but my expectations I must admit couldn't get any lower. Having said that, you have been a good friend here, and if I do opt out, you will be one of the 100+ friends I've made here, most missed by me.
Well I personally still haven't made a decision, but I don't like what I am hearing. As I keep saying, what's most frustrating isn't the changes per se, but the appearance that peoples concerns aren't being addressed.
Yes, changes need to be made, SRO's excellent analysis of the stats shows that, but in the hope of changing things for the better, you also need to take into account that people still need to be comfortable with the environment. I just don't see that. I guess I will see for myself in less than a week.
Mike and EI
You are NOT leaving , I put up a guide sort of ..:)
It's too bad that they still do not realize why so many have left! Lack of communication has been a part of the problem, but the majority of the problems that caused people to leave has been lack of Moderation, face it the Mods abandoned the Classic Vine and allowed it to turn into a Pig Trough. Why would the good authors stay only to have their comments, articles and seed collapsed and receive no response from the mods when it happened.... At least that part will be resolved in the new vine, they will have hundreds of unpaid mods to take care of the comments....
I have to agree that many left because we were pretty much left to the wolves.
Don't you mean hundreds of censors to take care of the comments my friend.
mike, a comment gets collapsed, you can still read it. an article is collapsed, it just goes poof.
I don't think people were leaving because of lack of moderation (there are other topics other than Politics) - it's because several had left a year and more ago, and the quality of the site was down. I read many saying their freinds were gone - the Front Page was mostly just Liberal rants, and they weren't finding enough of anything else to read and discuss - it takes two.
Maybe not in your experience, but it was so in mine. People stated they were tired of the attacks and the nastiness that were running rampant, with few or no repercussions on the worst offenders.
CL1, just before the election, the front page was full of republican rants.
I did another Google search and found this history of Newsvine to be very true and to the point.
http://dennispmccann.com/newsvine/
It explains the rise and fall of newsvine as we all have got to know it! It fills in the blanks of the who what and where and explains everything very clearly.
I don't think it explains anything other than the rise and fall of Dennis P. McCann.
I think a lot of people who were here through all of that (and some before he got here) will remember it slightly (to put it lightly) differently than he's reporting it.
Pretty accurate, and again, he rises from the ashes with his own creation.
Accuracy is a matter of perspective.
Agreed
Nice try Brian, but he has it all too well documented to believe there is anything "different" than he reported it.
The actual e-mails and even the articles that newsvine deleted are ALL there in their entirety for anyone to see exactly what happened from beginning to end. Be sure to read the e-mails and articles he has linked! He really did a great job at putting it all together in one place for the world to see!
Dennis offered to help with betaNV, Luke wanted to let him help and Tyler refused to let him in. Apparently it really didn't matter what the users wanted from the beginning. Those beta testers are aware if any changes have been made since it was first introduced and if their suggestions were followed by the 7 people in charge, from what they are saying their suggestions were not even listened to, let alone considered, and the new site STILL doesn't work properly just a few days before they will release it to the public. Don't you think they should at least be able to at least get the site stable enough so a few hundred people get everything on the site to function properly?
If it doesn't work for each and every beta tester with absolutely no flaws or glitches then it simply isn't ready for release!
I watched, read the comments and made up my own mind. Nothing wrong with that.
Brian is right.
I say this because I still respect and admire Dennis very much.
you know what , can some of stop bashing Dennis???? He isn't here so he can't defend himself and this article is about BETA not Dennis...OK?????
Two of the MOST informed NV viners were Dennis and now that is left is Sir Richard Owen, I don't like anyone saying anthing negative about either one of them...I like the both.....
There have been *lots* of changes to Newsvine 3.0 since the beta program started, much of it was due to feedback from the testers.
Since when does any technology work with absolutely no flaws or glitches??
I disagree but, you're right, this article is about the Newsvine 3.0 release - Dennis has absolutely nothing to do with it.
sammy:
Way way WAY too well documented, if you ask me, which, come to think of it, nobody did.
BrianFord: Your memory of the assassination of DPM is quite different than many of the rest of us..... Of course due to your having a hand in the assassination you might see it differently...... I will add, I was not a friend of DPM, nor was I on his friends list, but I did hold him in more respect than I now hold many of the folks that participated in the crime....
craxyrooster
Good post..
It sure has ;)
Well you are incorrect ;)
DPM wanted to be King, which caused a conflict with the rest of the usurpers.
MJL,
People can speak of their past relationships with anyone at anytime they so choose. That is not for you to decide.
Enjoy it while you can Shrew. After Thursday I think that all will change, and that's exactly what they will do. Control who, what, where, and when, you can say anyrthing, to anybody. This place will be more segragated than a Alabama school in the Sixties, wait and see, and I don't mean that in the racial sense either.
I have to disagree as well, there were tons of problems at the beginning that got fixed due to feedback from the beta testers. We didn't always hear back from staff as they were busy fixing things.
Huh? I can assure you that I had absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the assassination or even any interest in the goings on of Dennis P. McCann. I wasn't even spending much time here when most of that went down. In fact, I think I read about most of it sometime after it happened.
Not missing him or the drama he seemed to be constantly enveloped in isn't the same thing as participating in any of it.
Furthermore, disagreeing with his need to say he "co-wrote" the code of honor (based on seeing that claim after visiting a link that someone else posted) when that's not really at all how it happened (I was here, were you?) also doesn't have anything to do with pushing him away. I could post a list of accomplishments as long as his if I had the time or the self-importance. As could about a half-dozen other people who were here as long or longer than him.
So, you can either apologize for being wrong about my alleged role, or just continue being wrong.
Either way.
I was very vocal (and at times a touch impolite to staff, to my shame) about some issues I had with beta, at launch. I was listened to, and some changes were made, accordingly.
Well since you started in 2012 and more than likely didn't know DPM, Umm, so thank you for you comment, but it is nonsense, since you don't know the situation do you? :)
Fixing bugs and accepting feature requests and suggestions are not anything close to being the same thing.
I made feature and design changes that were listened to. I didn't make a whole lot of them, so my rate of return was fairly high. I don't know how it went for anyone else though, certainly.
Except that she legally left and closed her account and then came back, so yes she does know the situation.
Exactly, quit the derailing folks.
Thank you, northern girl. That is very kind of you, and kindness is a virtue never wasted on me.
Response from MJL@ #3.51
MJL, your comment demonstrates what happens when you presume rather than ask.
As far as great minds go, I would add a few of the original members of Newsvine because Dennis is only one of many.
You are correct and I appologize :)
iltoporagno was one of the previous nom de guerres?
MJL, thank you for that. I respect you for many reason, and I would like to know you better. This helps keep me from become an attack dog. It's a manic thing. No, really.
Yellow Dog, that is correct, but Iltoporagno is tied only to my FB account.
On News Talkers I am Susan, but I plan to add my last name.
I figure if I can find enough places to join and use a different name, I'll have all my emotions covered.
No problem ;)
It doesn't matter what you do to Newsvine, or what this launch entails. If you don't fix the problem with people being banned, and coming back anyway...you will NEVER enforce any COH on this site.
A to the Men NDD - notice how those questions were glossed over?
I have sent e-mails to the moderators giving them links to where the re-regs BRAG about having access to 1,000's of proxy servers and it falls on deaf ears.
Like I said above, this "new" Newsvine is all about satisfying the "cliques". I don't wander over here much, but when I do, there are a couple dozen who get preferential treatment...
Having a life outside of Newsvine, all I can say is lot's of luck with their blatant attempt at censorship!
I've already set up a place where we can go to get out from under the thumb of the "gang of 7", And YOU have been invited lol
PS: From reading the "beta-testers" comments the underlying theme is, Newsvine had NO desire to listen to their input and plenty of empty promises, when they weren't outright ignored... lol
Any successful website INCLUDES their member rather then beg them to try to crap their peddling!
Are we supposed to believe that somehow, they will now pay MORE attention?
Oh well, it is, what it is...
Every website has to deal with the issue in some form or another. Personally, I think people need thicker skins and to make use of their ignore lists.
PS - Of course they won't ban them, it would make their numbers decrease! lol
Meanwhile, as a user, we are supposed to put up with it!
FR, you don't have to put up with anything from this site:
If you didn't like Classic I know you're going to hate Beta.
I have a pretty thick skin. But, there is a certain group that engages in harassing behavior, and they get by with it. Why? Because they use proxy servers and re reg.
Newsvine has a choice, do something about that, or admit that no COH exists. If you can't do what you claim to do, ban egregious users of this site, then you have no COH.
And thanks for the invite, Feisty, see you there.
Yes, yes. Let us make Newsvine a place that improves public opinion. It needs help.
That book is great. I aspire to help Newsvine fit into the 'Approaches To The World Outside' chapter.
So what I am understanding is that if you do NOT like the New Newsvine, there will no longer be an option to go back to the Old Newsvine we all know and love?
belle42, I am so lucky I have had so many wives. I know how to take the agony of losing a lover and gaining another. You are right, Newsvine as we knew it will not fade from memory so quickly. Some of us may keep it in mind for as long as we have time. I hope the new Newsvine makes some people happy because losing the old will certainly make some of us sad.
Yes. No back button.
It's pretty unforgettable. I know I'll always think of it fondly.
You have a knack of saying felt thoughts, oldfogey. Indeed.
Try to keep an open mind and explore it, you may be surprised!
Belle,
You have friends who are still waiting for you.
hee hee -- much appreciated TTGA :)
Thank you dear. You know where they are.
Belle, come visit. Like TTGA says, you know where we are.
I hope I'm wrong, but everything I've experienced since being one of the first of the "Beta testers" leads me to believe this will be a catastrophe.
Me too, dslsca. Think you're going to stick around to try it out?
I'm going to log on Feb 7 and see. I've found "Beta" to be a hard-to-use, unattractively formatted platform. If we lose "friends" and "tracker" and other "Alpha" features which seem to be going the way of automatically being paid for our contributions, I won't be on Beta long.
I've not been back to beta since my invitation because there was no help whatsoever. So, why ever would I think this will be a good experience?
I dislike the fact that we will no longer have our friends.
I sure hope we still get to put people on ignore.
Luckily, dslsca and I can still correspond the old fashioned way: email.
Well we would all like to apologize for that and assure you that our top priority is helping everyone navigate this transition.
dslsca, Not being computer literate at all, I'm afraid that the ease with which I found a home on Newsvine, and the feeling of comfort while here, will leave and so must I, sadly! I have truly been dreading this date, to come, but will give it a serious try as I have many many friends that I stand to lose and that will not be easy. I suspect that it has been designed around the younger more versatile minds so those of us from the stone ages will drop by the wayside. AH, progress. Ain't it wonderful??
Thank you, Sally, you have always been prompt and very kind. I'm no longer a code monkey; but I've got some chops and I still couldn't navigate. Perhaps it was the ease of being able to go back to what was familiar that caused me to give up.
Well, faced with the inevitable; I'll do what I always do: go to the Student Union, down a few pitchers of Sam Adams and go for it!
FIN, you are Not going to lose us :)..there's still a Friends & Watchlist. Go to the Knowledge Base thingie & check out some of the stuff. :)
Actually, it's simpler & easier to navigate.
sidenote: did you have time to listen to the song I posted for you?
Are we still limited to 10 nations., and what's going to happen to private groups since they won't be private anymore?
The Knowledge base has answers. :)
I'm really going to give it a try! On the side note; I'm sorry but one of the joys of getting older and much to much uncontrolled noise in my youth is that I am now almost deaf so that the beauty of sound is lost to me now, also! Music was one of my profound joys but I can still remember and hear in my mind!
Indeed it does. Check it out here.
Not quite, mstanley2265, but you can still see your friends and watchlist data.
Fifteen.
It's complicated. One of the last things we figured out. Here's a detailed explanation.
Tyler,
On another note, I sent you a private message regarding the passing of a member (His brother did as well, and he also requested that I do so) and whether it would be possible to deactivate his account instead of his brother deleting his account, so that Dr Privitera's articles can remain on the vine.
His brother wanted to delete the account tomorrow, is there any way that you could respond to this?
Well, I'm not. I saved my Friends list to my computer. :)
EI,
The Doctor died? I am very much saddened. He was a good guy.
Ms.... I thought about trying that, but wondered if it will retain when they delete the site ? Or is that a dumb question ? (I'm not a techy)
yes, on the 10th or 11th of January,
He had some inspiring articles and it would be a shame to see them disappear.
It was expected however, as he had a particularly nasty and malignant brain tumour. The farewell article that his brother posted has more information, though it is more about his feelings about what he called 'the greatest debating society' that being the vine.
That's the attitude, RaisedByWolves. I hope it's a fun experience without the multiple pitchers, though!
Sorry to derail on my own thread, but I hadn't seen it. Condolences. Found the messages and responded! [Yes, it's possible to disable the account and retain the content.]
That's what is called a "canadian pint'. (well kidding but I am trying to get it recognized as an official beer serving size. :P)
O, no. I'm so sorry to hear about Dr Riccardo :-( He posted last fall about this, but he seemed to be thinking he had more time. I was afraid he passed away when I hadn't seen him in the last cpl mos. He had such wonderful insights to share & I always his enjoyed his articles. Sad news for NV.
Hey Tyler, can you go fish for my email from a cpl wks ago now? I'd like to take over ownership of a grp in which the owner self-deleted a few mos back & I was the admin. I know that can be done.
And perhaps prod the techies to quit playing w/ the new toys & take care of bug reports? B/c they're breaking stuff L & R around here the last few days. Simple stuff like publishing & joining a grp shouldn't be affected since that's not going away....is it?
[gives Tyler suspicious sideways stink-eye glance]
Scar,
check your inbox.
TYVM, EI.
Now, I seriously has a sad. Dr. Riccardo was a true light in the world. Bows head.
Yes, he once paid me the most unexpected and amazing compliment about my articles. Until that time, I didn't even know of him.
A really warm individual. He'll be missed. R.I.P
Indeed.
What I sent to scar was his brothers article that announced his passing. I didn't want to derail this article by posting it, but it seems that he touched a lot of people.
You can go to his profile and his newest article is where you can leave your thoughts and prayers (if you believe lol) for his family and close friends.
I've done so, thank you, and am glad you mentioned it, EI, as I was completely unaware of his passing.
I think just as how they have a weekly list of suspensions etc, they should have a regular bulletin of passing members, which a lot of us would like to see, I'm sure, to at least allow us to pay our last respects.
After all, this is a thriving community of people who get to know each other over time. It is no different from one's neighbourhood, except the anonymity of it makes it a little more detached. But the people are no less meaningful to each other.
No, scar_tissue. I can prod, but I expect the techies' work for the next week to be almost all future-focused. Apologies for anything cracking.
I'll link it, though I'd appreciate it if folks took thoughts over there. More appropriate.
I am not at all inspired by the responses I have seen. It is doubtful I will stay.
My intent at this time is to watch without comment.
I hope you will at least give it a try. I happen to really like it.
Well, stay long enough to see what YOU think of it. It will work a lot better once everyone can use it.
Great! Glad to hear it!
I wouldn't say I really like it at all, Ben, as I have deliberately not used the Beta version. But I have been watching its progress with interest, and getting gradually familiarised with at least its layout. As I believe change in life is inevitable, I will be taking it my stride and see how I get on. As you say, giving it a try.
Personally, I am very pleased to have the changeover date. The not knowing, with it just hanging over us endlessly, was more of a killer than the actual change!!
Good luck Newsvine. I think you'll need it, at least in the early stages!
With the loss of private groups, there is no reason for me to remain. I have made good friends here, I will miss the opportunity that the private groups afforded.
Whatever. Your site, you can do what you want, but private chat that currently exist had best remain private.
What will your interaction be with First Read? If you are not a part of that any more, I shall wish you a fond adieu. First Read was the main reason I was here to begin with.
newday
Don't leave yet we just became friends,....
Girlfriend,
If they mess with FR, it may well be the kick in the ass I need to start my own blog - see ya on the flipside!
{{{hugs}}}
hugs right back Feisty!
MJL-3: Will take a prudent look at staying, but I honestly don't see the purpose. The fun of the groups are gone.
And whether Tyler or Sally want to admit it - in the name of the almighty $$$!
Whatever happened to when people stood on their principles rather then their paycheck?
I can't possibly be THAT old! lol
Fiesty
If ya do email me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Luv ya!!!!!
OH! You betcha GF!
Luv you too!
Ditto for me, Feisty.
Recall, people, that Tyler and Sally were non-paid mods. Perhaps this is their chance to be paid for all they do?
Neither Tyler or my salary goes up because we are changing the site, although the work will be more interesting ;)
We are hear to help you all with the transition, listen to complaints and concerns, and anything else you may need!
I love Newsvine, but not that much ;)
Ah, I had read that on NV, Sally, so I thought it true. Glad you do get a paycheck.
So some of us will have our farewell party on the 6th! I must admit that NV will be missed, however the direction it is headed holds not interest for me, I have seen enough of the Pig Trough for the last several months and the nation concept is by concept too confining. I wonder if they will actually spend some time now to allow those that are not elite members to actually share in the proceeds from Google non Sense?
I think you need to really try it for yourself before making judgments. You may be surprised. I have a feeling that what you "thought" you knew isn't exactly what the change will be.
Try it out!
Sally, what about that bit?
Sorry Scar,
Tyler is working with Google to resolve this, although I know it is frustrating. An option is to make a blogger account.
Nope. That doesn't work either. Hence why so many people were frustrated and complaining.
Sally,
As Ms C just said, creating a blogger account doesnt work, and every email I have sent trying to get some kind of help or explanation has gone unanswered. To say that I am not impressed would be an understatement. Even a simple email saying we dont know what the problem is but we are working on figuring it out would have been welcome. I know I am not the only one with this complaint, and it doesnt seem like any of us have even been given a sign that the higher ups are looking into it. Surely you can understand why people are upset that TPTB arent even acknowledging that an issue exists.
That is the crux of the matter, Northern Girl, which needs to be acknowledged. Tyler has said further up the thread that Newsvine and Google are working on it, and Sally has also added that it will be sorted soon, which is fair enough. But the deathly silence beforehand, when tons of people were confused and complaining, did not put the management in a good light, and was really quite avoidable with a few key words.
Ms Cyprah,
I suspect that the silence is just too many things going on at once. It's what some in the IT world call a big bang approach. Sometimes it is not avoidable, but unfortunately big bang approaches more often than not just go bang. (not a good thing)
Yes, as usual, I think you're right, EI. :o)
I share your disappointment Rooster. Keep me in the loop for the farewell party on the 6th. I'm headed for the door as well.
EI, Ms Cyprah, and Northern Girl, it's been my pleasure to know you all, regardless of our political differences.
A pleasure to know you too, Marshall. Thanks for adding to the interesting discussions. :o)
If you do leave, I hope you'll return soon. You might be surprised! :o)
You are right about that. We didn't do a very good job of keeping you guys in the loop. I know Tyler is still in talks to work this all out, and I hope we have a solution soon. I will do a better job of communicating with you all in the future.
Thank you. We cannot ask for more than that, Sally, and we genuinely appreciate the work you have been doing, even if the criticisms don't suggest it. :o)
Why thanks :)
It is February the 5ixth, of God's Year 2013, and I say let's Party Like It's 1999!!
If this "It's The End Of The World" mentality related to the New Vine is anything we can or could compare to the Y2K Doomsday Scenario, it is quite possible that all this tear sheeding could be for naught.
And Damnit, That IS How I WANT To See It!!!
See You Later, On This Same Bat Channel, with a twist..
Peace. & Good Night!
Cheers, Old Newsvine. You were Awesome.
Cheers, Notso - see you over on FFR's February Balloon Party tonight. Anyone else want to join us, just click on my name and find the comments to link into that space.
Hear, hear!! Party Time!!! :o)
I'm glad we finally have a start date. Now we'll all be in the same place, and everybody will experience it, instead of hearing about it. Despite all the rumors, I think we'll make it work, even if we drive Tyler and Lance daft during the process:)
Here, here!
Yes, I agree with that too. But then I tend to be a positive person as nothing comes from doom and gloom!
Count yourself in there with the soon-to-go-daft, Sally. I may not have your email address, but I'm sure others do. *evil grins*
I can't speak for Lance, but drive me daft? Ha!
I've been here a long time, getting driven anything different will be fun. :)
Now those are words to which I can relate !! lol
I didn't spend much time in Beta - without everyone being there, it was tough to test. That's the problem with pilots - most of the testers don't immerse themselves in it, since they aren't forced to; I've started taking away the old options when I ask for pilot users at my job, to force them to immerse themselves in it. It's easier just to stick to what you know, so that's what most people do. Now we won't have a choice. So it will be interesting to see how this goes. I still don't understand why there's a limit on nations, because I like belonging to some obscure groups that I don't check out all that often. But we shall see.
I have been like you, hardly using it because i didn't like it and Classic was so much easier on the eye too.
I guess when we all have to use it, without the Classic being available, we'll get a better measure of it.
I can barely get around on classic now, I'm in for a lot of stairs
Yeah, Beta would have been more successful and the transition would be a lot easier if Newsvine Classic was just awful. :)
If Newsvine Classic had been awful, most of us wouldn't have stayed very long. You did Good, Tyler. Got us addicted.
I Need A Fix...
Can we please keep our friends lis?
Will you put up a guide to refer to?
I am excited about this but I am skeptical too...My beta doesn't track
If I stay logged in will it automatically kick me off log in during the switch?
Is the Beta we tried the actual format?
Will it work now with I9?
MJL, go to the Knowledge base...most certainly Is a Friends list & watchlist. They Kept it! LOL
I did and I found my friends list, had to use Chrome but when I tried to invite to my group it came back and said oops that page is no longer there so my question is do I have to wait untll the turn over before I can use that feature and how long will it be there?
uhh, NNV is set for Feb 7th. Probably has something to do with that..part of the switching going on to the all NNV.
IMO there will be glitches, heck there are glitches on the classic, there are glitches in the new Yahoo & I Think that YouTube Finally got their glitches sorted out...but than Twitter had issues...Sometimes I think the whole Internet has a glitch somewhere or other.
Feels more like driving on the Interstate...smooth driving & than rough...smooth driving & than rough....I figured that one out on the drive from the KY to NY....the Whole drive up there. sighhhh
Kind of. You might use that list to invite all your friends to a Nation if they're really important to keep in one place.
Right here. Still growing.
Pretty much. Of course, there will be a lot more people using it.
Internet Explorer 9? Yes.
with a limit of 15 nations, that kind of limits the usefulness of that feature doesn't it?
*waves to MJ*
Good to see ya GF!
been a very long time (and two self deleted id's) since I have seen Feisty around lol.
Hey Fiesty!!!
you can visit in my "Nation" :)
Tyler......
Can you get the 'new"comment to show in beta?????
We'll see. It's one of the things we couldn't really test. If it's not the sweet spot we reserve the right to bump it up. [I think I could get by with ten, I just like food, sports, crafting, and other people.]
Conversation tracker's working well, and it includes comment jumps to the new comments.
oh , really?
Ok...
BWHAHAHAHAHA!
This is the best they have to offer!
Like I said, Warden Tyler can ban me, which only means I will take Newsvine others else where! ;o)
While Newsvine still figures out how to PAY people! lol
So I am in beta now, click on the track (I am in I9) and click on this it said one new comment, took me to the first comment...not the first new one
I am not trying to be a pain in the ass but I can't access all of my beta in I9..I have to switch back and forth from I9 to Chrome...
Hope this is working by the 7th, or I will email you , just don't delete before it is read :)
I avoided the Beta, I think, but have had nobody answer the question, "Can you switch back to original format?"
I guess this answers that.
How do we copy our Friend List in a functional manner which will still allow us to make personal contact with those we have not done so with?
I certainly need to know a good method for that, as I do not trust the "new" from what I have seen from the "New Old" lately and the not so wonderful opinions/comments of those that went Beta regarding its, let's say, kinks.
Thanks.
Also, will there be a Greenhouse for new members, or do all of us have to reearn our stripes?
It has been a great pleasure to have spent the last nearly 6 years here, and I look forward to the change being a positive. As my Profile/By Line states, I am an Eternal Optimist Looking Thru Rose Colored Glasses!
Or at least it used to...
:-))))))
t has been a great pleasure to have spent the last nearly 6 years here
Correction: It is nearly five(5) years since my older version came across this fine part of the Inter Webs under my previous incarnation in 03/06. I just went to that other place and checked it out.
Wow, Tyler. It HAS been a long time. Thanks for the Dedication from ALL of the Mods here. It is what makes this place unique.
As a note to those worried about the Conversation Tracker, please let us know of glitches after we launch (and now if you're in the beta). We recognize this as one of the most valuable tools Newsvine has to offer and we have every intention of making sure it works well.
Tracking your Nation conversations will give you even more granularity. Good luck, we're in this with you!
it's not working well now just so you know. (though I am not in beta). Really glitchy for the last week.
ROFLMFAO
C'mon, dude. The overwhelmingly negative feedback to the 15 limit wasn't enough?
It doesn't seem to work with IE9 for me. I can't see categories, and when I click on a nation card, nothing happens. I wanted to leave a few nations so I have room for others ... I hate the limitation!
I have IE9 and it seems to be working for me; we are monitoring this though.
Sally
Some feature work and some don't I have to switch back and forth from I9 to chrome
Fox Fire doesn't work at all for me
Let me try some more, maybe it's the user :)
Have you tried Safari or Chrome? I use Safari which is just ace.
safari and chrome should render in exactly the same way. They are both written in the same Apple developed web engine.
Yep, I use chrome most of the time but I can't always manage my group invite, now in classic I have no problem with that..
I will just have to wait and see.
Is this a request? You can always remove your own account, Feisty Redhead Roselle, IL.
Newsvine-as-prison? That's a new one. Usually it's Newsvine-as-municipality, when I get called a cop.
Nope! scar_tissue, the folks in the beta who weren't at 15 didn't have complaints about the limit, unsurprisingly. The overwhelming majority of registered Newsviners aren't in any groups. I understand the perspective that groups are important to one's Newsvine experience.
I also understand that that perspective is rare.
You know, I don't think NV users should have to try different browsers in order to access NV properly and have all the bells and whistles work.
It's NV's job to see that people can use the site just as well on IE 9 as on anything else.
WOW, I can't believe you said that...
I can't believe she called Tyler "Warden". I can't believe she threatened to leave, taking others with her. There are some who left, or were banned, went to other sites, yet can't seem to stay away from here. People have been very rude to Tyler and Sally who have been nothing but patient in trying to answer our questions the best they can. Everyone needs to lighten up.
SW,
Fiesty isn't an employee of NewsVine. That is the difference.
And NO I don't condone being rude to either Tyler or Sally either, but that still doesn't change the reality of the role that they play within the vine community.
EI
I agree and
I like Fiesty and no she should not have called him that
SW
If a KMart or McDonald person said that to you even if you weren't buying anything they would be in trouble, I understand Tyler and Sally are busy and probably getting frustrated because some are not as thrilled with the new beta as they would hope, yes it will take time...It is too bad either of those statements were said...
yeah, re regs :)
Many things are being said in the heat of the moment but downright rudeness is uncalled for and unacceptable. Sally and Tyler have been the models of patience and I don't believe that their patience deserves such treatment. Apologies are definitely in order and don't forget folks this is still their playground and we are visitors.
If I insulted them it wasn't my intention, but people are really in the dark about this , they have gained alot of friends..on line or not , they are viewed as friends...
Pesonally I think the move is too soon...give us a month to go back and forth.....but a week for some it will be bam and they are on beta.....I didn't use beta much because my emails went unanswered or my bug reports were deleted before read...so ....?????
MJL-3,
Was she asking to be banned or removed from NV? Tyler wasn't showing her the door. He never said anything about banning or suspending her. He answered her questions.
There are several who left and came back who are not re-regs. They may have closed their account but were not banned. They simply opened a new account. A re-reg is one who has been banned and returns with a new account and ID.
I went to help today to find my friends list on beta and it is not there. I don't know whether it's just me but it isn't under my account settings or anywhere I could find. I don't know whether it's changed but it also will tell me how many new posts there are to an article but I can't find a way to locate tell which ones are new unless I read them all, nor can I tell what I have read and which haven't been read if I leave and come back. It may just be my ignorance, but I'm particularly bugged if I can't find my friends and who I want to track. These are the things I wanted to talk about with the beta group but had no where to go to access them. I know this isn't what this board is about....but this is a gripe.
rescue dogs62
to get to your friends list, once you are in the account settings, look for the tab called Newsvine.com and click that. YOu'll find the friends list and watchlist there.
rescue
Yep, do what rottlady said...however I can't access mine in I9 , I have to use Chrome to get that feature...sure hope this is cleared up by the 7ths...I don't like chrome, I like I9
Question
If we have a group and have others as admins if we leave and delet our account do they get the groups or is it deleted?
MJL as owner of ONV, in beta, looking under the hood I see what looks like an option to change the owners name, of course only the owner would see that I hope. I have not tried to but if that is the case, that would be a good thing.
Yes it would be a good thing, just in case :)
Agreed, VerbalBarb. The devs test as far back as IE7 [though I think it works a bit better in 8 than 7, and 9 than either, etc...]
People have asked me to ban them before. I don't tend to honor it when folks can do it themselves. Not everyone's aware of the option.
MJL-3, if your group has multiple admins and you leave the group, it won't be deleted.
Thanks Tyler,
Just in case :) but for now , I for one am not going anywhere...Beta will NOT get the best of me ;?
Hear, hear, MJL-3...great spirit! Looking forward to still enjoying your company...wouldn't want the place all to myself!! ha ha
Well, alllllllriiiiighty, then!
Well I decided it was do or die
I created a guide in BETA
And I WON!!!!!!!!!!!
I am proud of myself....
of course I had double picture and had to fix them or I could have just messed with everbody :) LOL
Well done, MJL...from little acorns.....???? :o)
To a big nut...does that me I got smarter here :D
Then WTH are y'all doing shoving ppl into grps if that's so rare? Oy. SMH.
O BTW, stop telling ppl to go make useless Blogger accts for that AdSense nonsense. I had me one of those b4 I even joined NV. It doesn't make any difference to em.
And I would really like an ans as to the ownership of the grp I requested wks ago.
Darrah has left the bldg. Poof begone. Self-deleted. (For those of y'all who insist that's not happening.)
We started that grp together. I'd like to retain it, not have it blown up Thurs, if y'all don't mind. Can I get an answer on this b4 then so that I will have the ability to make another grp b4 then & re-invite the members b4 then?
Yknow what's funny is, I really wasn't *over the limit* on grps. It was private grps & *pendings* that made it seem that way. Apparently the software reads those as a done deal b/c they're in your grp list. Now I am soooooo blown past that limit b/c of everyone taking the advice to start a *friends' nation* LMFAO Hellllooooo did y'all think most ppl had less than 15 on their FL? LOL You may as well just tack a zero after that 15 & give it up.
Can you send me an email in regards to this? Let's get it worked out.
I had faith that y'll would get it pulled together...considering everything. I do appreciate that you are pulling all the archived over to the new version. The old articles, some of them are absolute gems, though some..not so much..lol
High Five~~~~ to you all. :)
I figure if I could figure out the classic, which took awhile, this one will be a cakewalk. :)
Why do you think we cleaned out all the articles in the KK archive before the group was taken down? Because we didn't want them put up over there. Why do you think that many of us have removed all our articles and deleted them? Same reason. Many of them, by the way, have already been reposted on another site. I still have four group memberships to cancel before the switch. At that time I'll have nothing left on Newsvine but my Friend List and I understand that those will be gone automatically anyway. I have another place I can go.
uhh, no the Friends list & Watchlist are not gone. Tyler wrote to read the Knowledge Base that it's up & running. Really concise explanations and covers the part about articles/seeds too. :)
I hope so. Twipsys - these cool identifiers that pop up when you mouse over things - are a revelation.
In that case I'll have to remove that too (already copied elsewhere). When I leave, I want nothing left behind but a screen name.

Yes, that is all.
Tyler,
With every bit of my heart, I have admired your growth as well as the growth of Newsvine.
This event will be monumental for all of us, and I wish you, Newsvine and its members, the very best.
Cheers to the Newsvine staff. Bravo and Well Done!
Susan
Hear, hear, hear!!!
Thanks very much, TheShrew.
I'm really proud of them. Us. But Newsviners deserve a lot of applause for making this site grow. I'm always impressed by how many folks have done great work and had great discussions while it's taken us a long time to get this out.
Tyler ,are you saying I have to start my MJL3 Nation invites over????? OMG....please say it isn't so....
Post 12.3
Got it, my new group is fine...my two old private groups will be gone....OK...
Umm but 15 groups are not enough ...how about 50???? :) please, please you both shining stars of the vine.....:)
Not at first. Give it a shot.
You said you're carrying over the watch list, and I found it, but it can't be edited. If I want to cut it down before the transfer can I do it, or since it's over in beta it's a done deal.
rescue
In classic along the left side are - and +
to delete hit the negative by the watch list or person...
I'm an optimist from Missouri. Show me! No, not that. hmmm...OK, show me that AND the New Newsvine. I want to use it for a while before making a decision. No, not that! I want to try the NNV and make up my own mind. Put that away before you poke somebody's eye out.
LOL...you priceless, Missouri Mule!
hahaha...good one, Mule. Nice seeing you.
Not looking forward to it. I tried Beta and continually resorted to Classic. The Tough is the only place for real dialogue with anyone - otherwise, just within your "Nation," of which 15 is so confining, is like talking to your sister or brother.
Lose the friends? Sad.
There is no limit to how many members can be in a nation, so I think you can get enough folks in there to make it interesting. Not to mention, you will have 15 to choose from.
This was hard to explore during Beta testing, but I think you will have a lot more fun when it rolls out for everyone.
We'll see.
In going through my "Nations," rather tribalistic sounding....I am part of "Newsvine Beta." Will that Nation be eliminated, giving me one more to join?
You can definitely leave it, Shelby Davenport. I might keep it around for testing services and boot everyone out.
Tyler and Sally,
Will my newsvine account allow me to continue to post on First Read when the change happens?
Do I need to join a nation to do this?
I do not write articles or such ,but I love commenting on First Read.
I have gone into Newsvine and voted on articles but very rarely ever leave a comment.
Will I still be able to do this without joining a nation?
Whats with the Gated Nation and Open nation?
I was invited to be part of a nation that one of the Beta users set up.
She closed it down after a couple of weeks. It was not what she thought it was, and I personally thought it was not very useful either.
thanks for your replies to my questions.
First Read will be unaffected on 2/6. Our hope is that we can eventually incorporate Nations in some of the NBC Blogs.
Say WHat?????
mark,
Thank you for your response.
That is a relief.
I love First Read and will continue to post .
I willjust have to wait and see about this nation stuff......
So, we will still be able to post in the discussion sections on the tv.msnbc.com site?
Yes, definitely!
Fervent hope.
Dowser page ended up on NBC and she didn't put it there...WTH??????
I think this pretty much says it all. If you're a kid we're going to have all kinds of "fun". If you're a mature adult, well that's anybodies guess what you will or will not have, with the new NV.
Translation, Maybe you can get enough people in a Nation to have a conversation. Otherwise you're @!$%# out of luck. As far as diversity in that conversation goes, that all depends on whether the NATION allows ME to participate in YOUR conversation.
Mike, I think you can start a public discussion......
Have they now increased it from 10 to 15?
I don't know - I may be wrong.
You can be a member of 15 nations in the New Newsvine.
what happens if you are over 15 nations on February 7th? does Newsvine delete the excess nations randomly?
No, you'll get a prompt that explains the limit. You can close the prompt and keep using the site, but it'll keep popping up regularly. If you've currently got more than 15 groups, belle42, you've got an email explaining this headed to you soon.
So what I am hearing then is that people with "grandfathered" nations may be able to keep over 15 nations for an indefinite period of time by closing that pop up. They wouldn't be able to join new nations, but they can keep all the nations they currently have, even if the total is over 15. Is that correct?
Dead on, except the time will be 'a while', not indefinite - we’ll let users know in advance when we plan to institute the limit.
thank you for the clarification :)
I'm so glad to see this is finally happening! Thanks for the advance info.
You and me both, rottlady!
Well I will be ready but I have one question, Is adsense working for all of us yet?
No. Just me. Sorry, dog.
No. Some users are still having issues. It works for me like a charm and I feel quite bashful about it. We've got a wonderful contact at Google, though, and you can expect to see it replaced with a more official solution after launch.
Thanks Tyler, I'll wait for the launch then and try it out.
Um, if your contact at Google is so "wonderful" why has this problem persisted for so long? JUST FIX IT.
Not working for me either...I dunno, I'll give it a try. But it was nice mixing it up with people. And sometimes finding common ground that you never knew was possible :)
It's a big problem with a lot of complications. Working on it every day.
How complicated can it be? Change the registration form programming so that it accepts and pays everyone who fills it out and posts stuff. Problem solved.
dsl,
That only works if the problem is in the form. If it's in the back end, then it's a bigger issue that will take time to resolve.
The problem obviously isn't in the form. That's my point.
Believe me, if they were having trouble with a registration process that kept them from COLLECTING money from people, it would have been fixed long ago.
Whose arse is responsible for it? :P
Congratulations. Break a leg!
Congratulations on this accomplishment--I know it has been a long time coming.
As a member of a private group, I would like to know if it will be possible for us to maintain our privacy?
No. Why do you think Kato's Korner isn't here any more?
You can find more information about what happens to private groups here.
Your privacy will be maintained, unless you choose to convert your group to a nation. But it is your choice. Check it out!
Thank you, Sally !!
Sally -
No offense, but how can you tell Steeler Fan that "Your privacy will be maintained"? The link to "what happens to private groups" very clearly says they will no longer be supported and that their past can be deleted entirely and their only future option is to become publicly readable nations. So in the future there will no longer be any such thing as private conversations, correct? How is that "maintaining" privacy?
You can put all the shiny ribbons on this that you want to - and for whoever those ribbons actually apply to, I'm happy for them - but my private group here has become the replacement for the family I no longer have over the last two years, and from what I can see here, you guys have just announced that my family will be dead by this time next week.
You can't even begin to understand how devastating this is to me.
Exactly my feelings, too, JoAnne. Even with a "Gated" nation where only members of that nation can comment the comments are still open and readable to the public so nothing is private. This stinks!
Your previous privacy. Sorry to intercept the topic, Sally, I just happen to be here now.
Correct.
I understand the beef with the sentence construction, but I don't think Sally's statement is misleading. Any private discussions remain private, that's maintained; support is discontinued.
JoAnne in PA, you're right, I can't. I'm very sorry that this redesign has such a discouraging effect for you, and I hope you can continue with your replacement somewhere else. Newsvine provided those tools, and taking away tools is always a tough decision because people always do incredible and unexpected things with those tools. I think you'll be able to find something that will provide what Newsvine's private groups did.
Thanks for clarifying for me, Tyler.
Sorry you feel so sad about losing this feature, JoAnne in PA
Sally,
Anyone in a private group, like KK for example, where you could go and unload with people you felt safe with. is going to be a tremendous loss. You have no idea. Am \ I to understand all the discussions in my private group will not be avail to everyone to readas long as I don't make any new comments on one of the discussions.
Yes. Comments that were private won't be made public - even if the private group becomes a Gated Nation and you make new public comments on a piece of content with a private discussion.
I'm skeered and and I ain't skeered uh nothin".
I've been experimenting...click, clicking away...I ♥ it! It's Way easier than the classic was...or I've gotten better at Clicking away...LOL
oh, the classic went sideways or blooey or something weird looking so I jumped ship & got on the beta side. :)..
m clicking away ...listening to 105.9 Nashville Classic Rock!
I will miss the Old Newsvine because I am comfortable with it and know what I'm doing. However, I am looking forward to the launch date and will adjust. I know in the past, anytime I sent a "bug report", I received immediate help which was very much appreciated. It's very nice to know that when we "switch" you will all be there to help us again. Congrats to all for your hard work. :)
Pssst..... I sure hope there is help to figure out this Ad Sense thing. :(
Yeah, if there was a way to reduce the jolt from such a big change, we'd implement it! Alas, when a site doesn't change gradually, it's impossible to keep that comfort level.
I've continue to post some of my articles and seeds in Beta to my Nations and no one has bothered to comment except in classic. Hopefully that will change!
It'll have to, considering Newsvine Classic won't exist in a week! :)
You sure do sound confident that the people will remain after newsvine (as we know it) is gone.
Many have already left and many more are talking about leaving and that doesn't seem to bother anyone at NV very much. What's gonna happen, is gonna happen, weather anyone of us likes it or not!
The deciders have already decided what we will do!
I have hopes and anticipations. What's happening on this article is about what I expected with a few surprises. But Newsvine has a habit of surprising me.
I expect you'll still be using the site, sammy sezso...but I could be wrong.
Will we still be able to seed current event MSM news articles, and will they show up as they do in the Classic, open to public discussions on the topic, to anyone that wants to participate? Will it require a Nation for every news story seed? I'm still confused how we go about seeding articles.
Seeding is staying put, so you will definitely still be able to do so. They will be open to public discussion, but any nation discussion will appear first and the public discussion will be at the bottom of the page.
No, but it is advisable!
hated it during the invite, couldn't have a proper public discussion unless i went back to classic. otherwise you were confined to talking within a group. it no longer appeared as a public forum.
Yeah, this was a really hard product to have a beta for, because there was a whole version of the site running side-by-side that hid what we were doing. Big shift.
Does this change over only pertain to newsvine.com? Will the comment format on nbc.com be included? Isn't the largest portion of NV members concentrating on NBC aticles as opposed to here at NV?
I ask because I would hate to see NBC gum it up too and that would be at least a reason to keep the account.
For now.
I can't help but to be semantic here, as nbc.com is NBC TV's website, but NBCNews.com is not part of the launch.
However, once we show NBCNews folks how they could have Nation discussions above the frequent mire of those ginormous threads, I think we'll be powering those comments with the new version. I'm hoping Alan Boyle will let us put it on Cosmic Log sooner than later.
Today, Newsvine.com domains, tomorrow the world; I'd love to see Tina Fey Nation discussing 30 Rock over at NBC.com. [Wait, that's about to conclude. Erm, Jimmy Fallon Nation.]
Yeah, although the gap's not as big as most think.
Thanks for the reply Tyler and you're right I meant nbcnews, com.
I would be surprised to see Allen buying into this but I know the super nova will excite him :o)
I'm glad to hear that this is just for NV at the moment and ..... lucky you.
Funny you would pick 30 Rock, think that was Freudian?
Final thought, I think it would be a great idea if you would put a big bold link to this article on the front page of NV.
Newsvine's already had seven 'seasons'. ;) I actually have never seen the show, hopefully NBCUniversal doesn't read this. [I think 'Go On' is great, and I watch all the ads, bosses!]
I see an alert on the front page, do you?
Ref #24.3 the alert on front page.
No not in IE8 my default browser,,,, in Fire Fox yes I do see it..
I filed a bug report.
The alert Was There in Fire Fox, but I don't see it now. It's a good thing I copied it before!
Thanks, Lebowsky.
I'm in Chrome and it's not there.
I'm on Safari 6.0.2 and it's not there; I found it on the list below the list of seeds I've commented on. Now, of course, it populates that list, but only because I hit the "track this" button at the bottom of a page because things aren't tracking lately.
That sneaky little piece of aggravation called the "Alert" has more moves than an octopus in a wrestling match. It takes breaks when it wants, shows up late, leaves early and is mostly at lunch.
Observations in IE and FF, Chrome was left on the bumper :o)
This should be the first order of business and the clock/count down to change over should only start after that little pisser is nailed down tight.
Agreed?
Nice formatting - Do I need another bug report? lol
I've been here for four years, and I've never commented on the NBC side because they get nasty over there. I think there are many, many Viners who never go there.
I've also heard that a seeder can't monitor their own seed in beta, and certainly if a discussion on ones ownarticle or seed is opened in a group where the seeder isn't a member the seeder can't comment on their own article.
They can always post as a guest. Not a great solution, but.....
Actually it is like that now, you can't enter into the discussion on the "New Discussion" Tab on NV..if you aren't a member..it has happened to me...
But you can read them and sometimes it is better you can't say anything...it was pretty nasty...so I deleted the seed :)
I don't know about beta, but in classic when you delete a seed, and someone is tracking another person and makes a comment, it's opens the seed back up again.
Oh, ya it does, I think in classic you have to go to the bottom to stop tracking ,not sure in beta
Even going to the bottom to stop tracking does not work. Recently, a post popped up in my tracker from 2010.
Really looking forward to February 7th...for a variety of reasons.
Most of all, I've really enjoyed the beta.
Great job, guys. Having worked on a much, much smaller site for a awhile and a complete relaunch, I know it's a ridiculous amount of work, from every angle.
I get tired just listening to them.
Tyler, I would be interested in hearing your opinion as to why there was a need to end the Classic in favor of Beta in the first place? I understand it will be prettier, but is cosmetics better than ease in functionallity? What issues caused that decision from management to be made? What exactly will the benefits of the new Beta be, that couldn't be done in the Classic, other than keep certain members out of discussions, by creating Nations? I ask this in all sincerity, and would appreciate any light you can shed on my questions.
Me too....though I cannot say I've enjoyed the Beta. I just want to get on with it now, for good or evil, and see what happens next. Hovering around forever discussing it won't make it any better, until we actually TRY it for ourselves.
Mike,
There is a need to replace the vine because the traffic has become lower and lower quality, with much going on being essentially childish games meant to disrupt.
Which would you rather have, 1000 quality users or 1 million crap users. Which one would be better for advertisers? etc...
So from that I see the point of the change. But what I see in the change is something that a lot of good users seem to not like. Again, I don't know, but that's just what I see.
Doesn't matter. People on social networking sites don't click ads.
GM to drop Facebook ads due to low consumer impact | Reuters
SRO,
I don't click ads either, but seeing a GM ad keeps them in my mind when I am in the market for a new car. I am not saying the ad is worth a lot, but it is the same concept as watching ads on television, or listening to them on the air.
I think the problem with facebook is that they overvalue what the ads are worth, because they are using their social engineering algorithms to try and target ads. But that doesn't mean they are useless.
I just did a new guide in beta, and the article only wanted me to post in my nation so I went into classic to do that, I think it was because I forgot to pick a category but I am not sure, but it turn out "lovely" :)
Ford sees things the same way you do.
On NV, they are useless, because of the the spammers running macros to run up pageviews that nobody really sees.
well that's the point about 100K @!$%#ty users or 1K quality users.
all the extra traffic does is devalue the price of your ads.
...
Strictly IMO:
Newsvine has grown a lot and no longer serves its user-base as well as it did when it was smaller.
That sounds like a nice way of saying it will allow users to censor, and keep out certain participants. If the trolls are not stopped at the door, they still gain entry. So the new intent is to now stop them from entering the conversation. Well can't that same ability also be abused to stop good members from entering and participating in conversations of their choice, as well?
Yes, that is the balance that needs to be managed,
Of course. And, if that's an imbalance that "needs to be managed" the way to do it is with your feet. If someone moderates in a way that you don't like -- if they only want to hear one side of a debate -- don't frequent their nations or, better yet, start your own nation and post their seeds to your nation and have the discussion you want to have and show them the way it should be done.
As Newsvine will now be a free market, if you do the legwork to get word out about your Nation, and why it's better, the market can then choose.
Brian
Do you work for NV?
No, haven't you heard? I work for Apple.
(No to both.)
Why do you ask?
This sux. It was truly a free market when participants could comment on any seed at will. I didn't come here to sell a product, ie my Nations either. If you want to see what an ass kissing club looks like I think the new Beta may paint that precise picture. By your explanation are we now to try and sell ourselves to fellow viners to gain their favoritism enough to want to participate in our Nations, whatever the hell a nation is suppose to be. Just the word Nation suggests, a certain sense of exclusivity.
Brian
Because I am nosy, I am ......woman :)
I was hoping you'd say you worked for google, because it won't show the link to my FB page....
Yep... Cliques. Back to middle school.
They will become a group of 'acceptable' facts - as long as the group owner agrees with you (or judges you at a sufficient level of opposition).
Perhaps, but when that was the case, everyone was complaining about lack of moderation and the fact that they couldn't do anything to curtail trolling or jerks.
Oh, I know! They can just hire a team of moderators to do that for us, Oh, but wait. They better not put a bunch of ads on Newsvine in order to somehow pay for those salaries, because that's so annoying!
They can't win, I guess.
Mike, a nation is nothing more than a group but the conversation takes place within each group rather than out on the street with the trolls.
AMEN!
I think NV3 Will save me from being banned :)
how do you know if they are a troll if they aren't in the group and why would you let someone in the group if you don't know if they are a troll or not.
double edged sword.
I guess it's the typical new world. We are so incapable of taking care of ourselves we must design new systems to do it for us. Are we sure Washington isn't running this thing now? Nanny state on the NV because trolls offend us. Are the trolls really the problem or is it really an opposing opinion we want to silence? Correct me if I'm wrong here. If I'm on the street and want to participate in a conversation what's the process? Invitation by request? Suppose for whatever reason and I'm mainly concerned about personality conflicts more so than trolling accusations, is it not very possible admittance could be denied because of that? If so isn't that considered censorship? I've heard well that's a private discussion, in a closed Nation. Is that really considered a public blog site then? In my opinion trolling considering the vast amount of participants here, is really minuscule, which leads me to believe Nations has a much more exclusive purpose. It's only purpose is to stifle opposing opinions which could lead to dissension among the ranks.
There are trolls on both sides of the aisle, it is unfortunate, not sure what you can do about them though, because you can't really IP block because one can just use a proxy to change your IP.
What I was trying to say is I don't think trolling was that big of a deal in the first place. The reason it may have appeared to be is because I've seen numerous occasions when one seeder would call another a troll for simply disagreeing with them. Granted there are those that are always combative, contrary, and rude, but is that really trolling, or just a personality disorder. When you have situations like that I believe it's up to the community participating in that particular conversation to police, and address there own problems as a whole rather than as a particular political party, acquitting some, and castigating others simply based on an individuals political loyalties. The new beta addresses that by simply denying access based on really nothing more than the whims, and prejudices of the owner of that particular Nation.
well I don't think that from what I can see that the nation concept is a solution, that is just a recipe for an echo chamber. Replacing one problem with another. Oh well.
Mike, do you have friends now? Do you already belong to groups? Groups will become nations. We are only allowed 15 nations so we have to pare our groups down to 15 or less.
Trolls are not those with which we disagree. They are those who are here to derail, disrupt, attack, and lie rather than discuss and debate. I don't know how a poster with an opposing opinion got to be called a troll.
Yes but we don't pal around together following one another to seeds, as a gang. My friends are a badge of respect for each other, but we all have differing interests, so if we run into each other it is a random thing.
Yes about a half a dozen, but they are for the most part pretty dormant, and I rarely participate in them. I'm there because i was invited I spend all my time on the Top News front page participating in individual seeds, about current events. I'm not really a clubber, and for the most part a loner, and I like it that way.
And I've been accused of all of those things at one time or another here on the NV. It's has always been me that has come here to discuss and debate. I wish I could say the same thing about many, many, others I have crossed paths with here on the vine in the last 2 1/2 yrs. because it has been made more than obvious that's not why they are here. As EI has suggested they are here only because of the echo chamber effect. That echo chamber mentality will be even more solidified with the new beta approach to Nations. IMHO
Mike, the only thing you and I agree on are dogs and how cute we both are, but if I were to start a nation it would be missing something without you. ....a curmudgeon...'righty', gun lover...have I missed anything....and I would definitely want you with me.
Heck, I discuss religion with Grisham, and he's a friend, and we're anything but an echo of each other. He even invited me to his "discuss religion" nation.....I think it was purposely to make fun of me.
I was in about 40 groups but only because I have such varied interests. I didn't pal around with anyone, either, usually just running into friends on various articles. Friend doesn't mean that I will agree with you. In fact, a friend recently asked me into a fight, I disagreed with her and she de-friended me. This is the 2nd time she's pulled this chicken @!$%# act of de-friending. And I don't have to like or agree with you to defend you. If you are in the right, I will stand with you.
Mike in Ga- I always found you to be good company, along with many others on this thread.
Thanks to all three of you for the kind words. Leaving won't be easy because of folks like you. So we shall see what Thursday has to offer. From what I hear it ain't gonna be much though, but one big headache. It won't take but a few minutes to see how segregated this new version will actually be.
Mike in Ga-
Well it has mostly been fun exchanging opinions with you and will continue to be if you decide to stay.
Mr Mike In GA
I told you, you aren't going anywhere, give it a try :?
You will be able to see new users comments before you invite them into your nation using the new and improved greenhouse. So you can get an idea of whether they will add to your nation or not.
I understand a lot of the complaints, but really, you need to just try it out for a while and see what you think. I think you will be pleasantly surprised!
Can you darken they type...it is a grayish color and hard to see, can it be black???
