The new msnbc.com launches today, and it's powered by...Newsvine!

Today, October 15th, the new MSNBC.com launches. You may have read about it. It's got a lot of folks talking. Here's Alex Weprin at TVNewser:

User interaction will be a big part of the site, with comments displayed to the right of stories instead of underneath them. The hope is to spur debate among commenters… civil debate. [Executive Editor Richard] Wolffe said that the commenting technology automatically converts all upper-case comments to lower case, and reminds the commenter to calm down.

If you've ever tried to leave an ALLCAPS comment on Newsvine, you might recognize that feature. There's a good reason for that; the new MSNBC.com's commenting system is based on Newsvine. So is the registration; if you have a Newsvine account, you don't have to register to use MSNBC.com.

Here's msnbc.com's Executive Editor Richard Wolffe on how Newsvine powers the new site:

We are really excited to be launching the new MSNBC.com with the compelling, engaging community platform that is Newsvine. The vine has been the home for our blogs - including the phenomenal MaddowBlog - for many years and has given us a great start to what will be a thriving home for the new msnbc family.

Newsvine Nations will serve as the foundation for an infant community in the form of MSNBC.com groups. If you're a Nation admin, you will probably experience an uptick in applications and membership for your Nations, and we encourage you (and your Nations) to participate.  MSNBC.com groups can also be accessed from Newsvine. Suspension or banning from one is suspension or banning from the other. If you're familiar with Newsvine's Code of Honor, MSNBC.com's Community Rules are very similar. Address issues and arguments.

Newsvine's development team and staff have done a lot to prepare for this launch and still have plenty of work to do, but we won't be solely supporting MSNBC.com. We're really excited to launch this cool new product attached to a TV channel, but equally excited about the prospect of returning with renewed purpose to Newsvine. We'd love for you to check the new site out - there's a lot of opportunity for community-building there - but personally, we're excited to see more green on our screens. You'll be seeing more of us.

Every time we launch something, I feel this weird mixture of relief and resolve.

There's a lot of really cool stuff on the new site, but what I'm most excited about is that the new msnbc.com has its own Community Editors - which - if you couldn't tell from that last paragraph - I hope means a lot more green than blue on my screen in the not-so-distant future.

I am definitely excited to spend more time with the Newsvine community, Tyler!

I am also excited for the new site. It will be a lot of fun to play around with and see how communities develop there.

Lots of good things!

I just saw my column over on MSNBC, but having gone there from NV I was not signed in, earlier I was lol, so that is not a given.

I want to opt out of having a column on NBC or MSNBC. Multiple addresses with lebowsky in it. I think mine at MSNBC was lebowsky.people.msnbc.com. I want that removed for starters and permission asked for future ones.

  • Is there a list of FAQ's on the new site explaining what the changes are?
  • Will there be guides again?
  • Will multiple account (malicious) users be identified / banned from the site?
  • What is the optimum browser for this experience?

For now, you can use http://preview.msnbc.com to see the new version of the site.

It's really quite pretty.

"It's really quite pretty"?

Respectfully, no it's not; it loads at glacial speed, assaults the senses with overwhelming yet essentially meaningless graphics, and I get a message that a script is slowing down my browser (whether I use Safari or Firefox).

And I'm really resentful at only having two or three "reading choices" when I had a dozen before, and there's way too much emphasis on videos. I got my "need to be read to" maturation stage filled nicely during my childhood, thank you, and for those who haven't, there's always talk radio.

Thanks to all our contributors for creating a culture and presence that our sisters at MSNBC.com can emulate. We welcome any feedback we can get on the new product. As the design was developed independently of our team, there are some subtle differences the provide a unique experience that we're hoping works for their audience.

Promote your groups folks!

Promote your groups folks!

Do you mean Nations?

You haven't been listening IMO. The best part I saw about NBCNEWS.com or this new MSNBC.com (briefly) was a public discussion without the Nations. It loads much faster too.

Looks good so far guys. As users of a free service certainly appreciate the labor obviously invested into this change.

The only things I've noticed is that our NV articles aren't propagating into MSNBC correctly. At the moment the first few sentences copies in and there's a link to "View Original Article" that presently only redirects back to the few sentence summary.

I would like to echo Rick's comment. It seems promising so far, with some interesting features, but it will take a little while to navigate it confidently. Have already noticed an increase in Nations applications today!!

Its seems rather exciting, if a little daunting. Good luck!

That's what I'm thinking, also.

But hey, I am a political junkie so I'll probably figure it out. LOL!

I must be one of 10 people on the planet not to have a facebook account, nor do I want one.

I don't do well with change. Especially surprise change. I shall now throw myself on the floor and have a tantrum or two, say dirty words, and talk to God. This is Satan's work, I am sure. I shall stop short of cutting my wrists, though, so not to worry.

Maybe I will just have a nice cup of tea and a biscuit with strawberry jam instead.

Testing a comment here, I have not been able to post a comment on NV for the last 1 1/2 hours.

Another quirk,,,, I am not auto logged in to msnbc being logged into NV when I use FF but I am when using IE.

Thanks, Lebowsky...

That was my experience as well, and I couldn't post on MSNBC comments either; I put something up early in the a.m. after my shift and then hit the sack. When I got up up and turned on Martin Bashir, I didn't notice anything. and I don't watch Ed Schultz--I like him, however--so I went out to pay a bill...

When I returned I was in a Borg cube worrying if I was going to be assimilated, and my phasers weren't working so I headed over to engineering to analyze my tricorder readings.

I'm a MacHead myself, and the interesting parallel for me is that I can't access some features with Safari that I can with FF. One of those is my "activity" menu, and since FF on one partition is "dedicated" (I changed the background color for ease of reading on my most frequently visited site), I have to reboot to access NV.

That's a good thing in my case; hanging around too much is like some of the saloons I used to park my hiney on...

Easily your best one-liner ever, Vol... Props...

I'm waiting on ObamaCare because I knew that one would take time, and that's even though I developed a new "pre-existing condition" between the time of its passage and its implementation. The price of the new meds isn't breaking me right now, and my doctor is patient about getting paid.

I expect better from software pros, that's all (silly me). I'm wondering if it wasn't a bunch of Microsoft engineers up Seattle way who concocted this behemoth; probably even a correlation between pot being legalized...

It's that gray weather up in the Northwest; it slows people down; people drink way too much coffee to compensate, and then they have to smoke some boo to take the edge off.

#20.3 - Wed Oct 16, 2013 11:02 AM EDT

Bryce,

To make comments, you have to click on the menu's Pink COMMENT button - bottom button in the list of menu buttons.

Since the menu is an "Article" and articles can be collapsed with all comments lost - I broke the comment section of into a separate "Seed". Seeds can be re-published with all comments. All of the HTML code of the "Article Menu" can be copied and pasted into a new article should the original be destroyed. So the entire menu system is troll resistant.

Assimilation - in software systems - the best way to get users to change is to stop maintaining the old software. Makes it easier to get them to accept a new system. Resist but be prepared to change.

That is going to challenge your usual way of communicating. Perhaps this will be a good and learning experience. I have always blushed at your language, and look forward to actual opinionated answers....simply saying @!$%# you bitch, a very common retort from you....is not cool, nor does it advance anything. Let's see if you can do it. I would welcome a real talk, complete with factual references, sources and all those communication skills that make 'talking' meaningful. Really, I mean it....""@!$%# you bitch"" or your favorite use of the acronym ""c.....u.....n.....t"" ....just shouldn't be used....would you agree?

How about we begin fresh....and I ask you.....is Pelosi being used by her rich Union donors, to push legislation she has never read or cares about....or, is she a poor victim of the 2% of media outlets that show her to be an ill informed wealthy elitist buffoon, who spent more tax dollars on booze flights than any speaker in recent history?

I think the vine really sucks. The nation thing really is stifling to get around in and the way the old vine worked was much better. Back then when you posted an article you were the moderator and it didn't end up in the hands of other nations that you had no control over for COH violations. It is a shadow of what it once was and the only ones who think the new vine is awesome are the ones that were dropped on their heads one too many times.
