Nation Moderaton Begins November 11th!

As Tyler promised in his last blog post, we are going to be spending a lot more time on the green side since the launch of msnbc.com is behind us. We are extremely excited at the opportunity to get back in touch with our Newsvine community.

And after much deliberation, we have decided to start moderating Nations. That’s right, folks. We are going to start suspending and banning users who are violating the Code of Honor in Nations. We will also be taking action against Nation Admins who are allowing violations to occur in their Nations.

We didn’t come to this decision lightly, but since launching Newsvine 3.0 in February; we have received numerous complaints from you, Newsviners, about Code of Honor violations in Nations. Many of you feel ganged up on, harassed, personally attacked and otherwise abused. And as you all know, that is not the environment we are trying to promote on the Vine.

Our hope is that with a little guidance from us, we can start working towards making Newsvine and Nations an enriching place to be: where we are getting smarter, having intelligent discussions and leaving the personal attacks and other violations out.

Since this is a new policy, it doesn’t go into effect until Monday, November 11. I know it’s been a while so here is a link to the Code of Honor so you can all brush up on the rules!

Sally, I see you have been busy today, great job.

As a suggestion, although limiting 'new' users to a certain amount of seeds is not really a good idea, I think when a 'new' user has 2+81 seeds in less than a month ( Georgia Lies ) you may want to review their ID or whatever you do to find out if they are a re-reg. This would catch a few before it gets out of control. Just my opinion.

I did and couldn't find any evidence, but I did finally manage to nail them in a gang-seed collapse situation. Either way, they are gone now! woohoo!

Does this mean you will be moderating buttheads too? It wasn't so long ago when you told conservative viners to go to another nation if they didn't like the treatment they were getting. Just wondering.

I read that discussion too NYP and came away with the impression that NV had just hit a new low point. That really seemed to be the end of the COH IMO.

Well now we shall see if that was just a bounce or a splat :o)

Lebowsky, some right leaning viners are getting the impression that favoritism will once again be a part of newsvine. I am one of them...especially after reading that statement from Sally in butthead nations. I saved it because I have a feeling I am not going to like Sally's answer. No insult intended towards Sally, but I couldn't help think that way after reading her post.

I'm wondering if CoH violations are going to be determined with equality on either side of the political (or personal association) spectrum, or if they are going to be used as a hammer in a one-sided manner.

I'm guessing Sally's personal membership in ButtHeads might be an indication of an honest answer ... but I would like to see it in writing if just for reference purposes.

Non-biased moderation is what we aim for. And that discussion in Buttheads was one of the reasons we have made the decision to moderate Nations again, so hopefully you will be more pleased with the status of Nations in the future.

Also, I noticed the format here on this article is more like the old Newsvine format rather than the Nations type format. Any reason for that?

ButtHead Nation is so horrible that NYPeach has been a member since Feb. 23. 2013. BHN is a diverse open Nation. Critics of BHN can join and flame on the Nation if they want. Dissenting viewpoints are welcome. NYPeach has never had a comment deleted by BHN administrators because we never delete any comments (unless it's advertising or personal information).

... and who would have known that ANY name that I used was that of a viner had it not been for the person in question (or a certain "friend" of hers) who associated it with an identifiable screen name ... It certainly wasn't me that gave out that information.

Me stalking cobalt? Please ... I only respond to her to about every 20th time she tries to tell me how beautiful and irresistible she is (which she isn't).

You really want to bring that argument in here? I don't ...

I recall the incident and the painfully fractured syntax required to work Cobalt's name awkwardly into context.

It wasn't an accident. Please.

When I see the gang of righties man up and say "Okay, I/we were responsible, we did that, it was wrong and we apologize", then maybe it'll get dropped.

Meanwhile, all we see is mealy-mouthed foot-shuffling half-assed denials, projection and general indications that the maturity level of those involved remains stunted at about age nine.

I read this article in my e-mail a little while ago, and will break my vow to never return to this site again, if only to say "I told you so"! I spent the last six months before you forced this change down the throats of the participants, trying to warn you of what would happen! I can't count the number of times I was told that I was wrong and things would be just great, still want to tell me that? As I told you guys, when the site actually went into the final transition, I would not remain, and I have not been back since, and would not have been here yet except for this e-mail I received. Tyler, Sally, I love and respect both of you, but you have allowed this once great site to degenerate into what it has become. I will guess that it was not of/ or by your choice, but regardless it happened on your watch. The question that I will ask is can you now jump back in and save it? I honestly don't think so, but perhaps you will surprise me. Good luck with that. I will now go back to my self imposed exile and away from the "Pig Trough" that was once a great community.

Question about NV vs the msnbc site:

The msnbc site seems to have different rules, such as no swearing (even with asterisks). This conflicts with NV rules, does it not, where we can swear (within reason) and there is a filter for those who don't want to see it.

Since comments seem to post on both sites, how will the differences in rules be handled?

  • 12 votes
Reply#16 - Wed Nov 6, 2013 4:36 PM EST

This is a great question. The rules are a little different and we will be working off of our Newsvine rules and in Nations. When posting on msnbc.com though I suggest making sure you are following those rules.

  • 8 votes
#16.1 - Wed Nov 6, 2013 5:25 PM EST

The rules are a little different

I'm hoping that you will be posting these "new rules" where they can be seen by all and that (if they are enforced) they will be enforced equitably with an arbitration method which will be "un-biased". (Simply "ignoring" complaints from Conservatives or those not in a special relationship with Staff should be discouraged ... if not a offense that can be directed to a higher level of action)

I'm also hoping that Staff will be addressing the problem of current members who use the Newsvine site as a substitute for "Facebook type" blathering and "My Space type" of Internet sexual interchange and "off topic" derailing by certain Nations who are famous for coming onto an article and hijacking or de-railing it's purpose.

NV rules aren't different or "new"; the msnbc rules are different from the NV rules, and are available over on that site. Somewhere. Can't remember exactly where I found them.

Not sure I get this.

Am I responsible for comments AND articles seeded?

Am I responsible for comments in my group, or all comments in ANY group?

What about all the glitches and the new integration? No moderation tools on msnbc, and on newsvine I have glitches like all of October recently disappearing.

I am not too concerned, as my group is tightly controlled, but this initiative seems poorly thought-out, poorly explained, and ill-timed, especially considering that many group admins like myself are still getting used to the new integration with msnbc.

As an aside, user Georgia Lies is mentioned above. I find it curious that a user that is an admitted problem can seed an article with a deceptive headline and have it uncollapsed. I understand people's concerns about maintaining a certain decorum, but if this is the sort of uneven efficacy of moderation we should expect, perhaps you should leave well enough alone.

Good! You are an exceptional admin. This is mainly regarding those who let abuses continually occur in their Nations or blocking users out of Nation without an offense. I am sorry you are upset with the timing of this change, but we had been receiving numerous complaints and decided it was time to take action.

As an aside, user Georgia Lies is mentioned above. I find it curious that a user that is an admitted problem can seed an article with a deceptive headline and have it uncollapsed.

This user was banned earlier today and their content removed. I suggest if you are seeing something strange here to report it at support.newsvine.com. I will look into it further.

I am not upset, I simply believe that this initiative would be better with further discussion, explanation, and lead time.

There has been almost zero communication from administration since 'newsvine 3.0', and now we have threats of action against group admins beginning next week. I am not a paranoid conspiracy theorist, I am simply iterating the facts and pointing out that the initiative may be helped by some adjustments.

As far as the banned user, my point was that before being banned, the user had reported articles that were collapsed and subsequently uncollapsed. My point is that it seems counter-intuitive that a user who is a problem could have articles uncollapsed, and then subsequently be banned.

Anyway, I've had my say. Good luck and have a great day~

I wouldn't look it at as threats. We are just going to try to help out :)

I do believe that many of the Old Viners had felt that they had been abandoned as far as any moderation was concerned and fled the new Vine. Hopefully they will come back. Sally and Tyler should both have enough experience with some of the regular problem folks to spot them easier when they re-reg and start back in to their old ways. Hopefully the nation moderators can carry some of the weight and leave S and T handle the more complicated problems.

Welcome back mods.

It's with great pleasure that I must now apologize for my prognostications that are to be proven false. Those pertaining to 'This is the way the NNV is going to be, get used to the heat or get out of the kitchen.'

It's more than amusing that the worriers over an increase in moderation here are all well known advocates for the far right.

The return of any modicum of civility to NV discussions will be warmly welcomed. Excuse me, I've got to go into the garage and start dialing back my flame-a-tron. With any luck, I'll not be needing it any more.

Man, this format brings tears to my eyes. The only thing missing is the 'friends' blue color. Look, down at the bottom, a start and stop tracker! Huzzah! Green Stars in the corner!!!!!!

Welcome back Moderators! Has anyone told grump in N.M.?

I'm so glad you'll both be spending a bit more time on the NV side of things!

YDD:

Double-huzzah for seeing green for the mods, and rottlady in her lovely golden brown.

And triple for the XHTML mode - I miss it so much!
